Mavs didn't have a choice.
He is about to sign a 5 year 340 million supermax. You really want to give 65 million a year to a guy who refuses to play defense, refuses to get in shape, eats nothing but McDonalds, and is already missing half of the season at age 25?
No free agents ever want to play with him BC he has the ball the whole game, even if you found someone willing to play with him you wouldn't be able to pay them BC Luka is taking all the cash, and you have to watch him complain to the ref about a no-call all game while his man is scoring uncontested layups on the other end.
Luka has incredible skill, maybe the most of our lifetime. But he is a bad teammate and he will crush any team's salary structure.

-4 players (none nearly as good as Davis)
-3 1st round picks
-3 2nd round picks
-handful of later rounds
With this, Mavs get a very good but aging center, some other dude, and 1 pick in 5 years.

It's rigged in the sense that 28 other GMs found out when we did. The fact Nico didn't even attempt to shop Luka on the open market is the most unprofessional move I've seen that it beggars belief. Literally. I don't believe it. There is something else. It's either sheer incompetence or malfeasance at play. If he had even hinted that he was looking to trade Luka, the bidding wars would have been historic.
To get AD and a single FRP for a generational player who took you to the finals, in midseason mind you, in the middle of the night on a weekend with cloak and dagger levels not seen since the Osama bin Laden raid…..nah. Something else was at play aside from what Nico et al is saying publicly. It stinks. It stinks to high heaven.

Donovan Mitchell was traded for 3 picks and 2 swaps, but three of those picks were just traded for one 2031 unprotected Phoenix pick.
I wish we had a NFL Pick value thing for the NBA. Because a top 10 pick is so significantly more valuable than a 25-30 pick. For instance, the Nets have three picks that are projected to be 20, 26, and 27 this year. The Spurs have Atlanta's unprotected first and Atlanta just lost Jalen Johnson for the year and have lost 8 straight. If the Nets offered those three picks for the Atlanta pick, the Spurs tell them to **** right off with that bull*****
But not getting BOTH available Lakers picks and probably Reaves is inexcusable.

Was the talk of church this morning (south DFW metroplex). We were going over the merciful verse of the beatitudes. I'm going struggle to have any grace or mercy for Harrison/the adelsons after this. Sin struggle yes, but I am having to calm down crying children that loved Luka and have posters on their walls.

I believe we are seeing a sinister, but not unexpected, shift in our time with professional sports. For the record, I am a Rockets' fan, but this is an absolutely atrocious and shameful trade. It HAD to be orchestrated in such a way to favor the Lakers for purposes that are more than mere incompetence. I don't have "proof", but then again, doesn't the prima facie evidence tell the whole story? It's sad, and the storylines are now much greater than the game.

2nd - I was just making a point that someone like Mikael Bridges, who is good, but a 3rd of 4th option on a good team got 5 1sts. The mavs could have literally picked their return for Luka from almost any team in the NBA. The Spurs? - Yeah, you can have Luka, we want Castle, Vassel, 5 1sts and whatever else they could think of and the Spurs wouldn't have taken a second to consider it. It's an instant yes.
Jerry Jones paid the Mavs to do this so he wouldn't look so incompetent.
