They're good but it's painfully clear Boston is the better team. Need a miracle to dig out of this hole

It's bizarre to me that so many are afraid of just acknowledging the obvious. Especially since it's something we already knew before the series. Dallas was always the inferior team and the outcome of the series wasn't gonna change that. The question was always one, would Boston choke again and two, could we steal a few games just by Luka being the best player out there.

Boston being better was a fact established long before this series. The idea that who wins a series always determines who is better is and always will be nonsense. Denver was CLEARLY a better team than Minnesota this year. Boston was CLEARLY a better team than Miami last year.

Quote:

The problem with this approach is that the Celtics 3 point percentage says the mavs should have won this game. But we didn't because the game wasn't at all called the same both ways. It just wasn't. From the tip (they fouled DJJ when he collected the tip) and through the whole game.

But people who don't understand basketball and rely only on numbers have a hard time seeing that.

And remember, I was way down on the Mavs chances after game 1. But the mavs got hosed this game. We just did.
The Mavs aren't playing as well as the Celtics, period. So we shouldn't say the refs lost us the game. However, the refs in both games are calling a game that benefits Boston. They're letting everything under the basket go without a call. The are letting players driving to the rim get assaulted without any calls. They are calling touch fouls on the perimeter. You can see the drop off in the Mavs post game, and you can see Kyrie and Tatum struggling when attacking the basket. This pushes all the action to the perimeter, and Dallas is not built to keep up with the Celtics on the perimeter. Dallas' strength this postseason is attacking the rim and in the post, and they are getting beat up every time they try.

I'm not saying that the Mavs would win this series either way. But if the refs keep calling everything outside and nothing mid range or inside then the we have no chance. That's our advantage. Our big men in the post and our superstar guards driving are the only things we have going for us.

Let's just win Game 3 and see what happens. I remember a clearly better team coasting to wins the first 2 games at home in the 2006 Finals before all hell broke loose.

Yep I've watched too many NBA playoff games to know a series is never over after 2. Mavs got a tough hill to climb but they also haven't played a single second at home. Protect home court and see what happens.

Celtics clearly used some pagan magic and sacrificed a goat named Kyrie at mid-court before each game.

Irving will get 25+ tomorrow at home.

He better or they're not going back to Boston.

If KP cant play, that has a huge impact on this series, especially for the celtics defense. He's been so good protecting the rim

Imagine 3 years ago I told you that the Mavericks would soon be in the NBA Finals, and their hopes of victory rested on Krisnaps Porzingis being too hurt to be effective.

I will never root for a player to be injured, but man, the resulting storylines if KP can't play and the Mavs are able to come back and win this series as a result would be incredible:

-KP showing the same flashes in BOS as he did in NY and DAL but ultimately being too injured to rely on
-Exorcising the '06 demons by pulling a Miami (down 2 games, come back to win)
-BOS fans crying that the only reason DAL won is because KP got hurt, while somehow not realizing the irony of how they themselves were able to waltz to the finals

Is it going to happen? Probably not. But a boy can dream….

I'm actively rooting for KP to be injured, not like life altering injured, just injured enough to miss this series. They got a couple of cheap wins using their super team. Now, let's level the scales a bit. They're still a superior team than any other in the league without him. With him, it's KD on the GSW status with 6 players capable of scoring 20 plus any given night. We ran through LAC, OKC and MIN and look like a JV team compared to Boston. I know we could've taken game 2, but **** Boston. They stumbled into this level of talent blindly and then on top of it, had the easiest path to the finals in the history of the game. The universe needs to take them down a peg.

Need the James Franco "First time" meme for Mavs fans to Boston fans...or I guess anywhere KP has played.
Dude is very talented but just seemingly inevitably fragile

I'm interested to see if Kidd is able to figure out a way to alter our offense to get the lob threat going.
I'm not a expert in the names of all the defenses and offensive sets, but Boston has their offball defenders cheating over to mark Gafford/Lively as they roll and they seem to have the size to impact the lob. To the point where sometimes they are already there by the time Lively starts to roll off the screen.

Some of it may just be that Boston is getting away with fouling the bigs on the lob too, but that seems too simple.

The Athletic reporting KP has a torn tendon just above his ankle. "Status uncertain"

From the article:
According to the National Library of Medicine, the "vast majority" of cases like this are resolved surgically.

"It's a serious injury," Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said before the Celtics practiced in Dallas. "He's doing anything and everything he can to be ready for the game tomorrow. … At the end of the day, our team and the medical team are not going to put him in any bad situations so we've taken the decision to play out of his hands."

That really sucks for him, especially to work hard to come back for the finals and play well only to get hurt again.

This throws a lot of variables into game 3 and our prep for it

It was almost inevitable, unfortunately. It's the reason KD tore his Achilles. He came back from a calf injury too soon and the overcompensation leads to other, more serious injuries.

He didn't really hold up his end of the bargain in Dallas so no reason to feel too bad for him.

The doc video that GS linked thinks KP can play. That it will be more of a pain management issue, than a structural integrity issue.

The risk isn't so much further injury as it is functionality. Hes underselling how significant that injury is with respect to the relative inability to push off with the foot. He will not be able to launch off that foot nearly as powerfully. It will take away all of his explosion.

He'd be a big liability if they play him, and I think that will be apparent in practice.

Completely agree! Their lineup with a healthy KP is almost unfair. But KP has bounced around for a reason. I'm happy to see that at the very least he's gonna be limited

That's how I feel.

The mavericks gave up much more resources ( draft picks) and money to get porzingis and it didn't pay off. I hate seeing another team investing a lot less in the same guy and getting a lot more out of him.

Even if KP were to play again in this series I would go right at him hard and force him to defend lobs and rolls to the basket. At best he's going to be hobbled and he won't last long regardless of how many pain meds they put in him.

Been excited about today since my buddy called last week and invited me to Game 3. I planned on leaving work at 3. I ended up leaving today at 1 with a stomach virus.

So pissed.
