Having read the reports thus far, though the investigation final report will probably take months to come out, it looks likely there was nothing physically wrong with the aircraft. That most likely the pilot became spatially disoriented flying in some poor visibility. Saw an interview with another chopper pilot who said that it can be a challenge for a pilot to objectively decide when to proceed or not proceed, to make sure they are not taking on undue risk from pressure (real or self imposed) to 'complete the mission' and get an important client on time to their destination.
I don't know, from eyewitness reports of strange mechanical sounds to the drastic downward turn, I keep coming back to mechanical failure vs human error. I recognize fog can disorient, but the pilot still had use of an altimeter, speedometer, and gyroscope which should have precluded what appeared to be a sharp descent into the hillside.
The final transmission from the chopper pilot was that he was climbing to avoid a cloud layer.

From what has been put out there thus far, what happened seems most likely to be similar to that You Tube simulation posted in this thread. The pilot was flying low following a highway in a valley through some hills, got caught in thick fog/cloud layer and tried to ascend to get of it, got spatially disoriented and crashed into a hill side.

That panel was the saddest thing I've ever seen on TV. Gut punch after gut punch.

Guys we've all watched for decades and feel like we kinda know - opening up on national TV two days after their best friend died.

Yes. Seriously. That was an hour of raw emotion from real people. Do you see that on TV often?

Anybody watching the Kobe tribute? I wish there had been a prop bet on whether or not Lebron would make himself the center of attention. That was free money.

Classic lebron - made it all about him and then failed to deliver and lose. There was no doubt in my mind a lebron led lakers team would lose tonight. Living in Los Angeles most people hate him and expected the same outcome.

They do and did?

I did but for some dumb reason didn't take the Portland ML. I have no idea what Vegas was thinking putting the Lakers at -13. Way too much emotional drain for them to go out and play at a high level and Dame has been on a tear. Crazy that he just got his first triple double of his career and then fell one board short of back to back ones.

I didn't realize that "most people in LA hate him" though. Please elaborate...

from my interactions since he signed - people think lebron is a weak minded Kobe wanna be and when he signed to lakers everyone collectively gagged as if we have to "cheer" this guy now??

Remember all of the new lebron murals that were defaced..... sometimes 4x over. Kobe had to break his silence to say "if you're a fan of me you're a fan of lebron" essentially. Out of respect for Kobe la silenced their lebron disdain to whispers but no one likes him.

Very moving moments last night at the Lakers game. From Usher singing Amazing Grace, to the tribute video showing clips of Kobe playing, speaking, Kobe with his daughter Gianna and the rest of his family, to the National Anthem and the players clearly having a hard time not breaking down, to LeBron's short speech at the end (you could tell LeBron was having a very difficult time getting through that) and then all the Lakers players introduced as '6'6", from Lower Merion High School, Kobe Bryant'...I was teary eyed through most of it. Sad, just sad. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to actually try to play a basketball game last night, but obviously something they had to stomach through.

The Lakers lost by 8 to honor Kobe. Very moving. If they lose the next game by 24 it would be really special.

What did he do to make it about himself, I didnt watch. And I didn't know LA didnt like him, but that makes me happy. He is not a good person.

He spoke for only about 4 minutes and you can easily watch it (and/or all of the pre-game tribute) on YouTube if you want.

Basic summary of What I have in my head without rewatching:

- Read the names of nine people who died
- threw away written speech and said would 'speak from heart'
- Commented on 'Laker Nation' being an amazing fan base and family
- some comments about Kobe influencing him when he also entered league at 18
- That Bryant gave everything from 18-38 years old to NBA/Lakers and was the best dad ever last three years (he almost choked up on that part)
- that he would carry on the legacy
- Mamba out but never forgotten

Apparently though there was a phrase or wording somewhere in the speech that triggered some LeBron haters to rush to social media sites like TexAgs, Twitter, etc. and give their critical hot-takes.

Living in LA, I see it completely different than you. This town loves the guy has already crowned him and the team champion.

I don't like Lebron....and only follow the team due to Caruso.

Stop wasting time judging everyone. Live your life, do what you like, and let the people you love know it as often as possible because when tragedy strikes you'll realize how much time you wasted on crap like griping about a basketball player you've never met and never will.

They were 100ft from breaking through the clouds and into clear skies.

This news makes it worse because they were so close from getting out of this mess and this would be just another story to tell around the campfire.

'Vanessa Bryant sues helicopter company for deaths'

Unless this would all be going to the other victim's families, this seems odd (seeing as their family is worth over 1/2 a billion dollars).

Wouldn't be the end of the world putting that company out of business, as well.

This is the same woman who happily accepted a $4 million ring days after her beloved hubby admitted to adultery (via sexual assault allegations). So, who knows?
