I think the deal was done to make sure that we don't lose value on an asset. They essentially lock up EG for 3 years so that they have an option to trade him next year for a commodity. Someone will pay for EG, shooting is at a premium.
This is basically an anti-Houston Texans move. Make sure the organization doesn't get backed into a corner where another team can fleece them for assets or players walk out the door for nothing.
