The good news is that we've got a (potentially) great series to watch right now. Let's enjoy that part and other folks can worry about what might have happened 20+ years ago.
Potentially terrible series, too.
That's a matter of perspective.

Basketball is about match ups, which some people who never played the game at a high level can't understand. Bottom line with all the Jordan bs stuff is if the Sonics weren't such a bad match up for the Rockets a couple of seasons Jordans rings dwindle by one or two to the Rockets.

A rockets fan hasn't posted in here since the Spurs won game 2. A select few trolls when they win and then not a peep once they lose.

The Rockets' two titles are legit.

As are all five (so far) of the Spurs'.

The ghosts of 1995 are now at rest.

Good GOD that was a SATISFYING humiliation of the Rockets franchise in their own building. So much quit in red tonight. LONG time coming. Payback's a butch.

It was in their own building, but that building will probably belong to Benny Hinn or something the next time these teams meet in the playoffs.

As satisfying as tonight was, I still would rate it behind running the Lakers out of the Fabulous Forum to sweep them out of the 1999 playoffs, in the last game ever played there.

Whipping THAT franchise is truly worth celebrating. It's the only one in the NBA that has outperformed SA since the NBA/ABA merger.

The 99 sweep was nice but for me, beating the 03 Lakers to prevent a 4-peat and watching Fisher and Kobe crying on TV was a little sweeter.

Since the NBA/ABA merger, summing all regular season records from 1976-77 season thru 2016-17 season:

Lakers W 2,016, L 1,216 (.624 win pct)
Spurs W 2,006, L 1,226 (.621 win pct)

The Spurs stand a VERY good chance of passing LAL next year for best post-merger overall reg season record.

Third best regular season record over that span?
Suns (.566)

Followed by Blazers, Sonics/Thunder, Celtics, Jazz, Rockets, Bulls, Heat.

CORRECTION. All of that original post was 1976-77 through 2015-16.

Extending through 2016-17, the Spurs have blown past LAL for regular season win pct since NBA/ABA merger.
.624 Spurs (2,067 - 1,247)
.616 Lakers (2,042 - 1,272)
.562 Sonics/Thunder
.562 Blazers
.560 Celts
.559 Suns
.546 Rockets
.545 Jazz
.524 Bulls
.520 Heat (joined league in 1988-89)

Playoffs: (1976-77 to present, updated through last night)
LAL 277-180, 10 titles, 16 Finals, 18 CF appearances
SAS 218-169, 5 titles, 6 Finals, 14 CF appearances
CHI 167-122, 6 titles, 6 Finals, 9 CF appearances
BOS 192-158, 4 titles, 7 Finals, 12 CF appearances (favored to be 13 soon)
DET 149-117, 3 titles, 5 Finals, 11 CF appearance
MIA 123-96, 3 titles, 5 Finals, 7 CF appearances

No one can argue that SA hasn't been one of the most successful franchises, but 6 > 5.

The problem with that Chicago franchise is that in every other year but maybe one, they haven't been good. So 7-8 great seasons vs ~20-25 great seasons.

If you give 100% weight to NBA Titles Won and zero weight to everything else, then yes, you are correct that Chicago has "outperformed San Antonio since the NBA/ABA merger."

If you give any weight at all to the rest of the resume, then SA > CHI.

Regular Season (total of 41 seasons since merger, * = best in NBA):
  • *Spurs 2067-1247 (.624), Bulls 1738-1576 (.524)
  • *Spurs 22 division titles, Bulls 8
  • Spurs best record in conf 8, Bulls 7
  • *Spurs missed the playoffs 4, Bulls 14

Postseason (updated through last night)
  • Spurs 218-169 (.563), Bulls 167-122 (.578)
  • Spurs won CQ 20, Bulls 16
  • Spurs won CS 14, Bulls 9
  • Spurs won CF 6, Bulls 6
  • Spurs won 5 NBA titles, Bulls 6

The playoffs comparison is a mixed bag. The regular season comparison is no contest. I would give a lot more weight to the postseason than the regular season, but I would not ignore the regular season totally. So Spurs > Bulls over the long haul.

Same stats for LAL. Without a doubt you give the nod to the Lakers. The *******s.

Reg Season
  • 2042-1272 (.616)
  • 19 div titles
  • 17 best record in West*
  • 6 missed playoffs

Post Season
  • 277-180 (.606)*
  • 23 won CQ*
  • 18 won CS*
  • 16 won CF*
  • 10 NBA titles*
