Great! Love this, we get to win 35-40 games and be stuck in mediocrity a bit longer!

Have they announced the details of the trade? Really hope we can get a pick out of it, but dont see it being likely.

Remember the mavs saying how good Parsons is and how smart it was to overpay him?

Good times.

Remember Rockets fans thinking they would win a championship with Howard.?

Good times.

We weren't going to win a championship anytime soon, so bringing back Dirk was what I most wanted to see. I'm fine waiting two more years to bottom out if it means we get two more years of Dirk in a Dallas uniform.

The Mavs have made the conscience decision to remain on the mediocrity treadmill. No way this team is bad enough to get a top 3 pick (short of winning the lottory). At the same time they are going to be in the 7-11 range in the West.

On the positive side Dirk gets 40M and is happy that the Mavs are competitive. On the negative side the Mavs won't be good enough to get out of the first round (if they make the playoffs). Mavs also have no young stars to build around and still no clear way to get one. Best case is the Mavs finish 9th in the West and win the lottery. Worst case is the Mavs finish 8th in the West and get blown out 4-0 to the Warriors.

Yeah, I guess Cuban wasn't serious when he said he wasn't every going to get mired in NBA mediocrity because that's exactly where they are and where they will continue to be with the way they handled the offseason.

I guess it's easier said than done when it comes to just blowing it up and rebuilding.

I won't disagree that that the Mavs won't come close to winning the West, but to say they have NO young stars to build around is kinda misleading. While they're not stars, having Justin Anderson who showed huge potential last year, along with their new draft pick AJ Hammons being trumpeted as a first-rounder-type steal in the second round- there's your SF and C as a building block for the future.

If Barnes evolves his game, and there's certainly no guarantee he'll do that, he can become your 4.

So that's three players 24 or younger whom you can start to build something resembling consistency

Draft Express had Hammons as the #49 player. He was picked 46. Everything I saw on him pretty much said "He has the body and ability to be good, but he has attitude/work ethic problems." Not exactly a ringing endorsement. As for Anderson, we will see. Those two aren't exactly the youth and talent in Philly or Minn.

Hammond is a big, lumbering center in a league that no longer has a spot for those type of players (at least in the playoffs). I like Anderson a lot, so I'm excited to see how he develops. I think he could be a stopper on a good playoff team.

Dirk will now be the 4th player in NBA history with the longest tenure on the same team.

But he's still in 2nd place in the division.

(Kobe, Duncan, Stockton)

Giles and Tatum are studs.
What guts? You think Pop injured Robinson and Elliot himself? Spurs fans were calling for Pop's head.

Pop ended Charles Smith's career. Didn't let Chuck Person play all year - made him have unnecessary back surgery. Pretty much ruined Elliott's career (was never the same after that knee surgery.)

Yep, Mean Ol Pop blowing out knees and backs.

Wasn't the rub that Robinson had missed time with his back, broke a bone in his foot, and was set to be out like a month to 6 weeks, but ended up missing the entire season? Also, didn't Chuck Person miss the entire year with back spasms?

Anyone that says the Spurs were faking injuries or whatever to lose is a dumbass. Anyone that thinks they were hurrying their guys back to the court after starting the season the way they did after Robinson initially went down is an equal dumbass.

Regardless, it was smart to tell those guys to take as long as they needed to get better and to hell with the record. Not sure I'd even be defensive about it. How many times has Pop made the smart play to surrender a regular season game in order to get his guys rest heading into the playoffs? I know the league hit them for $250k not too long ago for doing it. Not beyond the pale to think Pop would do the same if it meant rushing guys back to be competitive in a season that didn't matter after 2 months.

Chuck person had back surgery during the preseason and they knew he would miss the entire season.

When Robinson broke his foot, he had to have surgery to repair it and they knew he wouldn't be back the rest of the season. Don't know a lot of players that break their foot, have surgery placing screws to help it heal, then are playing NBA in 4 weeks.

After watching the end of Bill Walton and Yao Ming's careers it's understandable why they wouldn't want to rush him back.

Elliot had season ending knee surgery in Feb.

I don't really give a **** if they tanked or not, but opposing fans really like to revise history like it was very apparent they were tanking, when in reality, they had some really ****ty luck that year with almost every starter going down with serious injuries.

Worked out, don't care either way, but it's funny how "clearly" non Spurs fans remember that Spurs regular season so it fits their agenda.

Not saying the surgery deal was known, but it's pretty cool you can pull up old articles of newspapers from the time.

Indeed. Here is an interview with the team physician. Six weeks was a best case scenario. Eight to twelve weeks was also on the table. At twelve weeks, you are at the end of the season.

http://articles.latimes.com/1996-12-29/sports/sp-13737_1_david-robinson

Because what you don't want is three surgeries in six months for the same fracture like Durant had. Same break.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/kevin-durant-s-out-for-the-rest-of-the-season--needs-3rd-surgery-in-6-months-on-on-right-foot-192721162.html

Also the same break that caused Rasheed Wallace, Yao Ming and Bill Walton to retire. Brook Lopez missed most of 2014 with it as well.

But yeah, Spurs definitely should have rushed Robinson back from foot surgery so he could play a few games in April.
