Thompson reportedly turned down a five-year, $80 million offer from Cleveland earlier this off-season. A max deal for Thompson would cost Cleveland more than $94 million over five years.
My "Holy ****" has 2 components. 1) Cleveland offered Thompson 5/80. 2) Thompson turned it down because he thought he was worth more.

I watched Thompson in the finals, and there's no denying he does some things well. Elements of his defense are good (specifically, he's athletic enough to defend the pick and roll well) and he's a great rebounder. But a max player? I don't see it. He gets most of his points off of offensive rebounds + putbacks and from what I saw, he's still a pretty bad rim protector (he was one of the worst in the NBA a season ago).

You don't give max money for junkyard offense and mediocre defense, right?

That is correct, BUT you are in Lebron's circle and Lebron will tell Snyder what to do. They may have no other choice.

Not sure Thompson has any other choice either. I can't see any team paying him more than 60% of that.

This is part of the price a team pays for having LeBron on your team and his guys calling the shots. It's a price that most would certainly pay, but it does leave your team in shambles when he leaves.

But the Cavs won't have a way to replace him if he leaves because one team is run by Kahn or Thomas or that Crazy Russian.

So while he isn't worth 5/80, he is worth more to the Cavs than he is actually worth because he is so difficult to replace. Just like the Thunder couldn't replace Harden, they learned from their mistake and overpaid for Enes Kanter.

Tristan Thompson started trying, put on some fashionable hats, hanging with LeBron and now believes he is a max player. I'm so confused by this entire notion.

Last year he avg. 8 points, 8 rebounds, .7 blocks, and his PER was a 15.2 (the league average is 15.0). He is literally an average player.

As a quick update, he's ditched his "play for the 6.8mil qualifying offer, but leave next year" strategy and is now holding out entirely.

The problem is that he has no leverage. Very few teams would get as much out of him as the Cavs, which tanks his market value. Also, stats show that he's basically useless for non-assisted and non-putback offense. All he can do on that side is score if he's set up very nicely and grab offensive boards. On defense, he's athletic enough to guard stretch bigs and defend the pick and roll, but he's a below average rim defender (up from an atrocious rim defender).

That's just not that max contract skillset or even close to one. He's going to be regretting his rejection of that 5year/80mil deal for the rest of his life (I still can't believe Cleveland made that offer). He's ultimately going to end up playing for half that.

Agreed to a 5 year/ $82m contract. Way overpaid. As much as I like LeBron, I hope he doesn't win another championship as long as he keeps forcing idiotic GM decisions. Because let's face it, if LeBron didn't really want him, no way he gets paid, and he'd be lucky to get half that on the open market.

LeBron can't settle until he catches Jordan in all things, and that includes worst GM ever.

If football doesn't work out for Johnny, LeBron can probably get him a 3/20 contract with the Cavs.

I cannot freaking believe they are paying 5/80 for junkyard dog offense and some stretch big + pick and roll defense.

Love + Thompson = ~$36mm/year

Kawhi+TheMarcus+DavidWest = ~36mm/year
