Maybe the NBAPA has better bargaining skills than the NFLPA.

An easy approximation of the reason is that terrestrial tv rights run to about 6.5mm per player for the NBA and 2.5mm per player for the NFL. The NFL's tv contracts are worth more, but not enough more to make up for the NFL having more than four times as many players on active rosters. The NBAPA is starting with a huge advantage.

I think it also helps that one basketball player is more likely to dramatically change how good your team is than one football player is. 5 players on the field vs 11.

This is a crazy deal if you look at it. The Sixers really did a number on the Kings (but still probably didn't improve), but will be taking advantage of the Kings desire to get cap space.
