I personally think the front office NBA has no say in who advances. I think the refs do though and they did tonight.
This was an incredible series from two teams that played at NBA championship level intensity. There is ZERO doubt in my mind the spurs would have taken the Tockets in 5. Unfortunately. They failed to close out game 6.
I do. For the NBA its all about the money and the bigger markets. Anyone that says otherwise is either naive or denial. Refs are definitely told to call it certain ways or in favor of certain teams.
They aren't told to favor teams. They are given a brief about the series or recent games and certain things that players have been getting away with or committing.
If Kawhi had been talking tons of trash to Spencer Hawes or there was some bad blood there for some reason, the refs would be briefed on that.
Also, they will be given game tape of each team and told to look for stuff, such as Paul's flopping, Blake's moving screens.
Earlier this season, a memo went out to refs because Chris Paul was leading fast breaks, getting in front of a defender that was watching a wing player to defend the pass and stopping so the defender would fall over them, causing a foul on the defense. The league sent video to refs and told them to call it an offensive foul. Refs did and Paul doesn't do that as much after getting called for an offensive foul several times.
The league doesn't tell refs to call it for a certain team or a certain way.
