I'm making the assumption that we want the two seed and don't care where anyone else ends up.

If Memphis wins tonight, they'll be a game up on SA and LAC will be a game back. If Memphis and SA end the season tied, Memphis will take it on tie breaker #3, which is conference winning percentage. Therefore, in this scenario Memphis would have to lose their final two games against @GSW and IND while SA beats both PHO and NOH.

If LAC wins tonight, both teams will be tied with SA. As long as SA wins both remaining games while both Memphis and LAC (DEN, @PHO b2b) lose one, SA would take the two seed.

Looking at those last four games, @GSW may pack it in really early while Indiana is fighting for the last spot but isn't as good as Memphis who is also fighting for seeding. Denver will be trying to lose and should have no trouble doing so, but the Hornets are fighting for the last spot and aren't at as much of a disadvantage to LAC as the Pacers have to MEM.

Based on that, I say we're going for LAC.

This type of thing isn't very compelling to me though. We'll find out in a few days.
Yeah, at this point, I'm fine either way as long as we win out.

We've won titles from both the 2 and the 3 seed in the West. I'm down with either. We'll have to play eithet the Rockets or the Mavs in the first round. Just no getting around that.

All I know is I'm rooting for Grizzlies to lose. Whether we finish #2 or #3, I'd like to win the division.

Does a Clips win tonight put SA in the 5 seed tomorrow morning?

How's that? Even if we win out, Clips can finish with the same record and would own the tieabreaker due to conference record.
If Grizz beat Clips, then Clips have 27 losses. SA has 26.

Yeah, nevermind, I was looking at the Grizzlies record. Yeah, it looks like if the Clippers win we probably drop to 5.

Yep, dropped to 5th.

Three way tie with the Grizzlies and Clippers. Our conference record is really hurting now.

Remaining schedule:

Clippers:
Nuggets
@ Suns

Grizzlies:
@ Warriors
Pacers

Spurs:
Suns
@ Pelicans

So we need one of the other two to lose or we'll finish at 5, even if we win out. What I find worrisome is that we're closing the season against a team that will be fighting for their playoff lives, whereas Grizzlies are playing a Warriors team that has absolutely nothing to play for, except maybe trying to keep Spurs out of the 5 spot.

In short, even after this 10 game win streak, we may finish at 5. If only we'd won that damn Memphis game...

Not necessarily true. If we, the Clips, the Grizzlies, and the Rockets all win out... We will be the 2 seed. It's complicated, but in order to do a tie breaker for 4 teams you have to determine the southwest division champion first in order to know who is guaranteed a spot in the top 4. Which means the first tiebreaker would be between the Spurs, Grizz, and Rockets based on head to head win pct. between the 3 teams in which the Spurs would have the edge giving them the 2. Then you would tiebreak between the remaining 3. Based on your regular tiebreak rules. There might be an outside shot of this happening, and I might be doing a poor job of explaining... But after tonight this possibility just became much more probable than say 2 nights ago. If that doesn't make sense, I can provide a few reference articles.

An easy sweep against Portland in the first round would give the spurs the rest they need. Golden State may have a tougher first round matchup than the spurs would at #5. Rest always gives a veteran team an edge over a younger, less experienced team (See 2011: Mavs vs OKC)

If Memphis loses to GS and the Spurs win out then what the clippers do is irrelevant because the Spurs would get the 2 seed over them because they would be division champs.

I suppose if we met them in the playoffs though then thru may get HCA. I'm not sure how it works for teams with the same record. Does it got to the higher seed or do they follow the same tiebreaker rules as they would for standings?

Sounds like Gasol sprained his ankle in the Clippers game. He may be out till the first round.

In all likelihood, the West 6 seed will have a better record than the East 2 seed. (Cavs are 51-28)

That's an insane lack of competitive balance

The Spurs now need help to get out of the 5 seed. They might get that help, but they need it nonetheless.

If the Grizz had beaten the Clips, the Spurs would have been the 3 this morning and would've needed no help to stay there AND still could've finished 2.

To me, the biggest thing is putting off GS as long as possible. Don't want the 4/5 series

It's quite possible that the Western Conference champion will only have HCA in the Finals.

What's the point of putting off GS? Are those that want this jus hoping for injuries? I want them round 1 if possible. The Spurs are playing great basketball right now. Who knows if they'll be clicking on all cylinders in a month from now.

Not sure if serious.

They are the other best team in the West. You'd (correction... maybe it's just me) like two other teams to get a shot at knocking them out so that the Spurs don't even have to play them.

Ok. I've seen conflicting comments on here regarding the spurs chances at seeding. Could someone clear it up?

It seems to me that if the Spurs win out, they'll be 56-26. If the Grizz lose a game, they'll be 55-27. It doesn't matter what the rockets do in that scenario. Therefore, we would win the SW division and be the 2 seed. Is this not correct?

Spurs lost their opportunity to control their own destiny with the Memphis loss last night. Currently, in order to get the 2 seed, they need either:

- To win out and have Memphis lose a game, or

- to lose one, have memphis lose one and have Houston go undefeated.

A tie with the Grizz goes to the Grizz. A three-way tie between MEM, HOU and SAS goes to Espurs.

If it comes down to a 2-way tie between us and Clippers, then LAC has head to head tiebreaker.

In a 3-way SA/Mem/LAC tie, we are obviously the 5 hole (this is the situation this morning). Division champ has to be determined first, and Mem would go over us.

In a 3-way SA/Hou/LAC tie, we get the 2 seed. Division champ has to be determined first, and we would be division champ in this scenario.

In a 4-way SA/Mem/Hou/LAC tie, we get the 2 seed. Division champ has to be determined first, and we would be division champ in this scenario.

As someone else mentioned, and I've said a couple of times, we lost control of our destiny to stay out of the 5 hole with the Clips winning last night.

It appears that the Spurs are peaking at just the right time but as far as gaining the best seed possible they started just a little bit late.
Having said that I think they are playing better than anybody right now and as long as they stay healthy throughout the playoffs there isn't one team that really scares me in a 7 game series. I'm just ready to get the regular season over and get these playoffs started!

Win out and Memphis lose to Warriors: We win the division and get #2.

Memphis, LAC, and Spurs win out: #5.

Above scenario plus Rockets win out: #2.

So basically we have to hope Grizz lose to Warriors or else root hard for Houston. And of course win out.

Can anyone else recall a season (in the Duncan era at least) where the race was this close, and so many seeds were still up for grabs in the last two games?

The Spurs could go to New Orleans 55-26 in a situation where a win makes them a 2 seed and loss puts them in a 6 seed.

That is bat guano insane.

No clue about Cojo, maybe Pop wants to get Patty in rhythm more than get Cojo reps.

Btw, watching the Rockets thread when they losing is crazy. Those guys (and gal) have really extreme reactions.

Pacers are beating the Thunder by 3 with 7 minutes left. If the Pacers win (playing for the 8th seed right now) and NOLA beats the Rockets tonight and the Timberpups tomorrow, the Thunder are eliminated from the playoffs and the last game of the season between the Spurs and Pelicans won't matter at all for the Pelicans.
