Excuse my ignorance, but why would we have to involve a third team?

We really don't have any assets we can trade for that kind of salary straight up. Our 1st rounder won't cut it.

Gotcha.

I don't know who would be worth moving up to 13 for the Spurs to get, unless they're moving up for a big man.

Well that would be the the big prize of the trade obviously the Spurs would have to like somebody enough. I mean they got Leonard at 15.

If they don't like anybody enough in the draft then they obviously wouldn't just make a deal straight up for Marion.

A Bonner for Robinson swap makes sense for both teams if Houston can't find a better suitor. A straight up swap would still save them some money since they would be able to waive Bonners unguaranteed contract beforehand.

Marion makes some sense, but only because Leonard is so young. Next year will still be his 15th season.

As long as we're talking trades, apparently Luol Deng is on the market. I don't see how it could work, but with a three way trade and the Spurs' front office, who knows.

Spurs can do A LOT better with 9.3mm in cap space than a 35 year old Shawn Marion.

lol once again it brings the 13th pick. Last time the Spurs picked in the lottery they grabbed Kawhi Leonard. If they feel there is another player like that around then a one year rental of Marion might be worth it.
Ulrich

I'm not a huge fan of the Marion idea, but he was more productive last year than I thought he was. Youth is an important concern, although less so at SF since the future is set there. If Marion would take a pretty low number, he's worth it as a backup 3 or small ball 4. I object to his shot on moral grounds, but in the Spurs system he's probably a 35% 3 point shooter and still does a decent job filling the stat sheet and playing defense.

The more I think about it the more I wish we could get our hands on Tyreke Evans. He certainly has flaws but I think he could really blossom into a great player here.

The Kings officially extended their qualifying offer to Evans today officially making him an RFA.

I try to not get too high on any free agents/draftees so I'm not disappointed when we don't land them, but I REALLY want Evans. I think he's the best combo of adding to a young core for the post Duncan and Manu days and gives us the opportunity to make a run next year.

I agree.

Oh I already told you what I expect.

Thursday we will draft the best available draft and stash foreigner. Then we will virtually re-sign everyone but Blair and then sign 1 or 2 veteran players and call it an off-season.

Still fun talking possibilities though.... For awhile.

Sadly, this probably what happens. If we don't plan on making any moves in free agency, I'd at least like us take a player in the draft that will be on the roster immediately.
Sher Thing

There's a chance somebody could fall to 28 but looking at the mock drafts and where I think players will actually go. It seems like there's some pretty good talent in the mid to early twenties but it seems to drop off right around pick 23-24.

No big surprise but Sactown made the qualifying offer to Tyreke. Looks like we would probably have to offer him a substantial amount if we wanted him on our team.
West Texan

I'm not an espn insider, but on spurstalk they're saying Chad Ford's latest mock draft has us taking Gobert at 28. I'd certainly be happy with that, but I'm skeptical.
Sher Thing
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He would be a no brainer at 28. So would Dieng but unfortunately, I don't see either falling to 28.
Sher Thing

Why is it that the teams fans who just had their heart broke are still the only ones talking NBA draft/free agency?
Enzo The Baker

Because basketball is still fresh on our minds.

It seems unlike the Spurs to show their cards this way, but I really, really like what I see. Deadly shooter, prolific scorer, good ball handler, versatile, and he improved dramatically and consistently as a college player, which speaks well of his work ethic. The main flaws are that he played on a crappy team, which means opposing teams weren't necessarily playing him all out, and I don't see any mention of his defense. He's a little undersized for a 2 but it sounds like that is his natural position.

All in all I'd say that if they draft Erick Green, Neal is 95% gone.
West Texan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not sure how I feel about possibly picking Green. I know the amount of talent at 28 is limited but I'd rather have a big man or a true wing. Green is Gary Neal; undersized 2 without the handles to play point and questionable D (he has to be at least a little better defensively than Neal by default). As said above, Neal is most certainly gone if this happens, but you gotta think one of Nando or Cory Joseph would be gone also.
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I suspect Nando is gone regardless.

This is still just a rumor anyway, but if they don't think there will be any wings or bigs who can make it in the league left at 28, then they might as well get the best available. We're talking 28 in what is generally considered a weak draft anyway, not a lotto pick in a year where they would have several future starters still on the board*. It also does not preclude the option of trading a player/players for another, higher pick to draft a wing or post.

I think the Spurs feel that Neal, as an undersized single dimension player, is pretty replaceable. If the rumor is true, they must have a high degree of confidence that EG can fill that role from day one, which means that they retain the current level of performance and free up more money and options in free agency or for trades/sign-and-trades open at other positions.

* with 30 teams * 5 starters divided by an average career length of 10 years for starters (reference), you're looking at an average of 15 starters drafted per year. Super rough, but it tells you that you're not really expecting to draft starters after the lottery even in an average year. Even if the numbers are somewhat off, certainly by 28 you're "out of the money".

Green has a lot more length than Neal. Hard to believe that college's leading scorer will be available at 28 though, but who knows. If we do draft him, that's just less money we have to spend during FA which I like.
West Texan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'd rather take Nate Wolters than Green. Wolters is a true point, is 6'5", and is a good shooter from 3. May not have the athleticism to be great and may suffer on D, but his shooting and ball handling skills should make up for it.

Saw a rumor on Spurstalk (for whatever that's worth) that the Kings aren't looking to match offers with Tyreke Evans.
Enzo The Baker
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's interesting. I see a lot of the Tyreke speculation on Spurs boards but nothing that shows we actually have interest.

Ian Thompson says that the Celtics will now hire Bret Brown as their new head coach. Damn, make the finals and look what happens.

I think someone mentioned TheMarcus Aldridge. Sounds like he'll be moved, but not to San Antonio:
quote:
LaMarcus Aldridge has wanted out of Portland since the last week of the Trail Blazers' season and did not re-sign sponsorship deals in Portland this past year, including agreements with Cadillac, Chevy, and Providence Hospital while asking to get out of a lease on his Pearl District condo.

...

“This is why I hate being in Portland,’’ Aldridge said during the last week of the season. “You can’t do anything.’’

According to the report, Aldridge would not only welcome a trade from the Blazers, but he hopes for one, believing the city is too boring and small.
