I guess the no state income tax isn't such a great selling point after all.

When it rains, it pours.

The no income tax thing is a myth. Players get taxed based on where the game is played so only half of the games are subject to no income tax. Florida also doesn't have a state income tax.

It's more games than that if you play for the three Texas teams.

41 games in Houston
2 games in San Antonio
2 games in Dallas
1 game in Miami
1 game in Orlando

Guess in the grand scheme of things, the difference is not that much in tax savings. But then again, I'd rather keep $10 than give it to the IRS.

So high property Taxes and state income tax.

2M house depending on location in Houston area will have over 50k in property tax

Add in the 2 games in Memphis, as TN has no sales tax.

However, when an agent is getting paid on commission and is the loudest voice giving advice, I don't think the message gets emphasized too much.

80% of NBA players are broke within 2 years of retirement. You really think state income tax is going to be a contributing factor on their decision the way most players spend/budget their money?

Not to mention, the endorsement money in LA, NYC, and Miami easily makes up any shortfalls in state income tax loss.

As a group, people generally value what they have. For example, I value winning spelling bees. Black people value athleticism over skill.

They always hated Yao and thought he was overrated. I would be surprised if the the players thought Dirk was THAT good. And the Spurs are the opposite of everything that black people appreciate (again in general). Player like to play with other players that they respect. I just think that Texas teams don't have the kind of players that most want to play with.

I don't really think most would agree with you. T-Mac wanted to be traded to Houston to play with Yao. Looking back, the trade didn't work out, but at the time, everyone would agree he was a superstar in his prime.

Unbelievable. I don't even know what this is supposed to mean. What are you trying to say?

Alex Rodriguez and Jose Canseco for MLB. In the NBA theres less actual FA movement overall. I know the three Texas teams have signed guys to restricted offers several times only to be Matched. They've also all done a good job holding onto star players. Who was the last star to leave Texas on his own?

3 years later bump.

Seems like superstars are not wanting to play with kobe and Melo.

Interesting bump. Guess black superstars don't mind playing in Texas anymore. Dwight, Harden, The Marcus.

I think the endorsement money is a much stronger argument than state taxes or racism.

To me, a much more interesting question is why does the West appear to be structurally stronger than the East? Within the conferences teams rise and fall all the time, but over the last 20 years the West has dominated head to head win%. Especially interesting when you consider that there is actually a stronger basketball culture all along the Eastern seaboard than there is anywhere in the West.

It's not a huge difference in the end.
Not to mention the high property taxes.

I've been wondering this the last couple of years where the East has been awful. What is it about the West that makes them so much better? Is it coaching, front office, PG play?

It is strange. I always think players want to go somewhere they can get paid, win, and live it up. That usually means a large market city. The east had a lot of large market cities: Atlanta, Miami, New York, Boston, Philidelphia, etc. But yet, out of all those teams I just listed only Miami has had a pretty good run the last decade. Boston was good for a couple years and then dropped off the earth, and let's not get started on the knicks...

Great thread bump. I had totally forgotten about this.

Things have really changed in a short amount of time. I actually really think a lot of it has to do with social media. Now, instead of the need to be in large, media intensive cities to be highly marketed, players can be marketed and even market themselves to a worldwide audience in a matter of seconds. Superstars in Cleveland and Oklahoma City are getting bigger endorsement deals than superstars in LA and NY.

Things have changed quickly. Think about the country's stance as a whole on gay marriage 3 years ago and it's amazing how quickly the overall sentiment has changed. 5 years ago I never would have thought that SA, HOU, and Dallas would be signing players that were offered the same amount of money in LA and NY, but now it seems like the no-brainer choice for these players.

One thing I think Spurs, Rockets and Mavs fans can now agree on is that this new development is pretty awesome.

BTW, I don't see how anything I wrote on this thread was racist. Now, PascalWager's post seemed pretty racist, but the rest of the thread was pretty much just the way things had always been until the last 2 offseasons.

Neat theory but it's easier than that. Endorsements come when you win... and when the management in the big cities are pretty much all run by numbnuts right now, the prospects of winning there are no longer really high because nobody will want to follow a superstar there.

Don't think Twitter, Instagram and gay marriage play a factor in it.
