So is 8-12M the market value for a backup C who gets 19mpg?

Omer Asik just got a $25mm contract after playing 14.7MPG backing up Boozer and Noah and averaging 3 points and 5 boards. Asik's per 36 numbers are 7.6 points and 13 rebounds. Tiago played 19mpg for 9.3/5 for a per36 of 18/10.

So yeah. Seems to be in the 8-12mm range.

This is also why I suggested the signing of Kenyon Martin. While he's certainly not the perfect fit, I think he would be able to play that role and then allow the Spurs to keep Splitter as well.

Haywood available.

The Spurs won't pay that for a backup Center who averages 19mpg.

Ya think.

I said his market rate. Spurs lose him through trade or free agency.

I know what his market rate is.

I was suggesting in my original reply if he thought a backup C who plays 19mpg is worth 8-12M

Apparently the NBA thinks it is.

Splitter isn't paid that much, which is exactly why the Spurs will (and should) hold onto him for at least most of the year, and let him walk in free agency or work a S&T deal near the deadline if he hasn't improved. Again, at his current salary (and figuring in the other tradable players on the roster), the Spurs won't be able to realistically add any kind of quality to their team. That is why you hold him and wait until he is a more valuable asset or until his contract has expired. He is playing for a contract, and has every reason to play with a little desperation this year.

That's fine. I have no problem holding onto Tiago. I said I would entertain trade options with him being involved if it brought back the right package. That's all anybody said here.

Is just your opinion. It's not like Tiago makes a million dollars or something. He makes about 4M this season which is decent amount around the league and with the other assets the Spurs have they could realistically get that # up to 8 or 9M if they felt the right player was available for that price somewhere. Obviously this is just speculation and the other team would have to agree but it's certainly possible. If the Spurs could get rid of RJ's 30M I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this happen.

I mean look at what the Spurs did last year. They traded George Hill (a proven player in the last year of his contract) who they knew they would have to pay the next summer or watch him walk for a rookie named Kawhi Leonard who makes significantly less and will be on the team for at least 4 years.

How many people called that a rebuilding move? How did that one work out?

Great article with a lot of Duncan quotes:

Fair enough. I apologize if I came across as a bit of a dick, because I wasn't intending to be a dick. I just go from 0 to 60 when I see any sort of "we need a decent big" or "if we put our 9th-12th players in a sack, we can trade them for someone good!" ideas and I go nuts when I see whiffs of both.

I just don't think there are going to be many quality options with Tiago as bait, never mind the Neal/Bonner/Blair pupu platter. Like them or not, they're cheap, quality minute-eaters in the Spurs system and there aren't going to be better/cheaper options. There aren't enough crappy GMs in the league to trade the pupu platter for something good, and even Billy King can do good if he's got unlimited wealth behind him. So, the best hope is finding a bad GM and get a decent player out of the N/B/B trio, which means you'd then have to fill out the roster with
half the Toros and call that your bench, since the other option would be to lure a bunch of vets to play for the minimum, and history shows it's rare for SA to get quality out of the "I'm going for a ring" types.

The other option...keep the same basic roster, and hope Kawhi develops at the same pace he did last year or better, and hope the year's playoff experience wound up putting hair on Splitter/Green/Neal/Blair's balls because they all kinda wilted in the heat of the WCF last year.

Not at all. I enjoy talking basketball with with knowledgeable people.

While I get your point I just feel that If Ian Mahinmi can get 16M why can't we move Blair? There are tons of bad FO's out there to deal with not to mention certain FOs that are willing to make deals just to get out of a contract.

If the Spurs go into the playoffs with Blair and Bonner then they won't win anything. It's really that simple. Their chances are slim as it is and I realize that, but seeing them waste another run with Bonner and Blair on the team is just infuriating. I would rather cut them and pick up two guys for the veteran minimum. That's how I feel about those scrubs and I don't think the Spurs would miss a beat without them, and there are plenty of players to realistically replace them with that I believe would be an upgrade.

I found this gem:

quote:
The total value of the contracts for for TD, Green, Diaw, De Colo, and Mills is less than the value of the contract that the Nets gave Brook Lopez.
