I think the team will improve as the season progresses under Coach Bobby. Coach G didn't leave our soccer program in good shape given his poor recruiting and last several years' results.
Like a lot of people, I went from having 0 interest in soccer to loving it during the World Cup
With that being said, dumb question from a newbie
Why did we hire a coach with 0 head coaching experience to follow Coach G? I could understand it in baseball with Michael Earley to retain the roster but that wasn't the case here

Yea, so Baylor is better than us right now. And they'll be better than us for a little bit. I'm a believer in Lenard as I've known her for a long time and seen her build DBU the way she did. Her main issue is playoff winning. I knew we'd lose this game since we just don't have the players or organization that they do. But, I was inspired by the effort this team displayed. Last year's squad with G (maybe last several.....) would've laid it down and given up 5 goals to this Baylor team. This team of youngsters fought back though. They were overmatched but played with heart we haven't seen for a while.

I thought we'd go for a big home run hire also, but don't think we were able to do it. According to posters, we interviews some head coaches at other schools, but ultimately ended with Shuttleworth. Well after the portal closed and as an assistant he couldn't bring anyone with him. Coach G did also sign a huge recruiting class that put us over the roster limit, so that would put any new coach in a bind.
My exact thoughts, they came out with a fire in the second half and played much better… this young team will keep growing! Can't wait!
For the real kicker let's see how Shuttleworth handles a loss in his post game presser… do we think he's going to blame the girls
Thoughts from the game:
-came out in a 442 diamond formation to match up vs the front 3 of Baylor. Started with 20 and 55 up top. 55 will need to be a 90 minute player come conference games even as a freshman, she's so dangerous. Started with 10 playing at the top of the diamond behind the 2 forwards, 9 subbed in at that spot as well and was the goal scorer right before half time. 16 played off the left, 7 off the right, and 8 at the base of the midfield. 14, 11, 6, 2 were the back 4 for the majority of the game from left to right. Will be interesting to see if he sticks with the 442 shape vs all front 3 teams.
-in possession it still looked like a back 3, with 2 at right back pushing high up the field.
-first goal was just poor marking in transition. 2nd goal was a ball in behind the right back in transition who was caught flat footed. Considering she's listed as a forward, not too surprising to see her out of position defensively, but I love to see coach tying to maximize the talent that gets on the field. Overall I think she played a good game.
-I think the formation didn't do us any favors defensively. In possession 16, and 7 were both out wide to provide width, and then when we lost possession the middle was very open. 16, and 7 both had to run a ton to cover the midfield and outside because the forwards were not going to track all the way back and outside.
-8 and 16 in the midfield are so vital. They both run forever and are physical.
-would like to see 18 at left back if we stay with the back 4 vs front 3 teams. We need attacking fullbacks if we want to have any chance at creating. Go man on man in the back. We're already giving up chances as it is by going +1 in the back so might as well try pushing another number forward in my opinion.
-too much will be talked about the shots given up. With how coach likes to play, we will always give up a lot of chances in transition, especially while the team gels. The more glaring problem is the amount of possession we have, compared to the shots it turns into. Lots of wasted possession that doesn't progress forward into threatening positions.
-the 2nd half when 5 went in at left back and pushed up was more positive.
-you can see things are still in the feeling out phase, which is expected. Need to figure out what the shape will be for us vs front 3 teams and get used to that because I expect to see that a lot. Eventually all the possession will lead to more constant chances once they get used to each other. Stay positive and don't freak out that a team with a ton of new players figuring out how to play together haven't gelled yet. Enjoy the improvement.

We still have three open slots on the roster I believe, I don't think the roster limits were the biggest deterrent. I just think the timing was not right and girls were not going to leave FSU for A&M in soccer. Just not going to happen until we rebuild a little bit more.
Also there were rumors that we tried to grab a few girls through the portal that were SEC players and I believe that is a conference rule you cannot take transfer portal soccer players that enter portal after feb 1. My understanding is that the staff was not aware of this conference rule and that hurt us on a few players staff thought we could get.
Why can you understand it for baseball but not soccer? Early keeping the team together didn't really turn into anything. We underperformed for 2 years under him.

Whatever you think of Earley's tenure two years later in 2026, at the time of the hire, a big reason was to keep the roster together, but none of the players on last year's soccer team had a connection with Shuttleworth so it's a different deal

Just trying to figure out the logic behind that. We should have hired one of G's assistants then. Keeping the roster together for baseball don't turn into anything. Maybe bringing in a new coach for baseball would have attracted new top players while keeping a hold of some of the old. Obviously 2 very different scenarios, and we have the hindsight of looking at one of them 2 years after. Was just curious why you thought that about one but not the other.
We actually played better than expected against a quality Baylor side. We had a lot of possession tonight but couldn't convert it into any consistent offensive threats. We give the ball away too much in the midfield with some indecision and it directly led to Baylor chances on goal. I'm seeing some of the Florida St type run of play from the coaches, which you can see will be successful down the road. We need a true striker and much more speed on the field. I'm also concerned about the outside backs continually beaten down the line for crosses into the box. We are playing a lot of youth and inexperience so we will have to patient. Bobby will need to hit the portal hard in the offseason. I do think we will be a decent side by end of the season however.
Tough loss to Baylor tonight, 2-1, but I honestly thought the grit and fight from this team were incredible. We controlled a lot of the possession and, for stretches, I thought we completely owned the game. We played good soccer, we just couldn't get enough from it.
Obviously, we need more offensive threats because we can't expect to defend for an entire game and rely on that. Getting beat down the left side has also been a problem that we need to fix. That we can work on hopefully. Also thought the midfield wasn't amazing, but we played a completely different formation.
But to the people saying we suck or that we're "super slow" you genuinely don't know what you're watching. This team has a lot of quality. I thought we played better than Baylor tonight; they just did a better job capitalizing on their chances. Honestly, we should've at least gotten a tie out of that game.
Baylor has never been an easy game for us, and I don't think anyone should expect an immediate perfect team. We're a young team, and it takes time to build chemistry and figure things out. Every game so far has been a step up, and I think we've already shown a lot of growth.
Texas State won't be easy either, but I'm excited to see how we respond. Don't let the result take away from what this team has. There's a lot here, and we're only getting better. Gig 'em.

No, he is essentially saying that A&M shouldn't be a learn how to be a head coach job and he wanted someone who has head coaching experience. There's really only 1 person to blame for waiting so long to make the hire.
SEC rule if Feb 1 deadline for intraconference transfers, but they can take transfer from other conferences so long as they declare by the May 1 NCAA deadline. Kind of inexcusable if someone didn't know this rule.

65% of our minutes in the first two games were played by freshmen and sophomores. We are very young and changing the formation in game 2 puts even more pressure on the players to figure things out quickly.
I don't think Baylor was faster than us or more athletic. We are certainly a lot faster than last year. It felt like we were the better team in the second half, but they still had some good chances, especially attacking our left outside back.
Baylor was definitely more organized and know what their coach wants from them. They might be the model for Bobby going forward if he can keep the young core of girls and add some more offense.
Our offense isn't great. Baylor did a good job of covering Churchill and I am sure other teams will focus on her given our lack of offense elsewhere. TCU just lost 2 highly ranked twin freshmen who are attempting to get an ncaa waiver to play this season. We have two spots on the roster and I hope Bobby is at least considering talking to them if the waiver is granted. They would add to our offense.
The run by Crooks and finish by Lacher was impressive. If we are going to play 4 back and lack playmaking up front, our defenders will need to do more than that. 3 goals on the season and Crooks created 2 of them (drew the pk against rice). Need more of that from the backline.
Our transfers haven't been great so far. I am still hopeful, but clearly Bobby thought Lacher was better than our highly ranked transfer last night, and the other transfers either didn't play or didn't contribute much on limited minutes. It's a shame if coaches really didn't know the sec rule and cut some girls thinking we would get other players. In particular, I think James and Noble were odd cuts as they can both contribute some at this level. Our set pieces haven't been good so far and James was excellent with those in the spring.

Addison and Alexa DeJoseph, a forward and midfielder from Georgia. Ranked 25th and 37th in the 2026 class. Not sure what happened at TCU, but they announced on social media that they have left and won't be playing for TCU this year. I have no idea what the chances are that the ncaa will grant a waiver, but they didn't play in any games for TCU.
Well hanging on too long is one thing, but not making an immediate hire when you're targeting an asst coach is another.

Still waiting to see what the winning combo will be offensively for this team. Is it just me or did the backline seem to constantly run with the attackers and just usher the ball in? Especially on the first goal. It's not the left back getting beat. It's the whole back line ushering the attackers in to goal and not marking. A strong midfield is so crucial to this level of play. They gotta be fit and gritty to keep up. With a new head coach, first head coaching job, it is to be expected he needs atleast 2-3 years of rebuilding and recruiting

Our backline certainly needs to be better. I don't think the issue in the midfield is fitness or grit, but a lack of connecting, possessing and defending. Look at that second goal again from last night and you will see the baylor mids carving up our mids before the ball is played through to the goal scorer.
Agreed re: midfield. Was just speaking in general terms. Wanting to keep thoughts to a minimum as people have already done their shared analysis here. But yes, midfield needs to keep possession, stay a bit more patient for that connection and movement forward

I've heard the family is a little bit, how should I put it..."high maintenance". Leaving the first week of the season has to be a pretty big red flag, but I am sure many coaches will put up with it if they can produce on the field.
I've heard this also. My daughter went to the TCU ID camp last year and had no good words to say about them.
