Can't say I blame w.ham for playing hardball, but I've moved them onto the dislike podium of London clubs.

I guess that's how it goes when you're negotiating with a dude who made his fortune off of porn and a prostitution ring

We should lower the bid now since West Ham are being such *******s

Definitely wouldn't budge on the payment plan. Apparently we said pay over 4 years and they want it all in 18 months

Even with the drama and paying a ton, he makes the team a lot better

"A lot" better? I hope so. This kind of spending can set a team back 5 years if the player doesn't set the world on fire. I remember thinking that 80 million was too much when the rumors started in the spring and I can't help but feel like like we might have been better served with 2 players in the 50 million range.

We were the 2nd best team in the epl last season. Now with Rice and Havertz are we better than citeh? I don't think so. Not trying to be a debbie downer, maybe I'm still just gun shy after the Pepe debacle.

How else do we get to better, or as good as, City? We can go get multiple lower priced players but do any of them actually improve our best 11 enough to put us on par with City?

The market is just bonkers. I hate it, the risk here is immense, but I don't know what the club is supposed to do about it

this was classic man dhabi though. they never had any intentions of signing Rice. they did it Man United with Maguire and CR7. they did it when they kept everyone else from really bidding for Kane when they wanted Haaland.

they jumped in the Rice deal just make Arsenal pay up while they went out and got Kovacic.

Man Dhabi has become masters at market manipulation.

Straight facts. And because they can basically pay anything everyone has to react to any threat they make in terms of bidding for players

Did he really hit 4 homers in 4 swings or was that an edit?

I think he might've. Wow.

exactly. everyone is scared AF of them. so, they waive their hands over the players their rivals want while they quietly do actual business on the other side.

Maybe you don't? Is it better to throw hail marys at great risk financially in hopes that we catch lightning in a bottle or do you make more prudent financial decisions, try to stay in the champions league spots, and bide your time until citeh are either actually punished for violating FFP or leave the EPL to join a super league?

I honestly don't know.

If the super league ever happens, Arsenal will be in it and still competing with City as it is

No offense intended here but it's just wild to me that a player like Rice is going to get over 100 million. He's good! But that pay rate was formerly reserved for a small select transcendent players. Crazy what the market has become now.

Think we all agree. Same player born in a different country and being transferred from a different league likely costs us 70-80 max. Pushing to only join 1 team may even lower that a bit.

Yeah it's overpaying but it is what it is. If you want to challenge Man City this is the reality now. And at least we have the owners now willing to go for it (and a track record of success in different sports)

I'm more concerned about overpaying for Havertz than Rice.

Based on everything I have read on Havertz, I actually feel really good about that signing. Go wathc the old Tifo video on Havertz that I posted on page 7 and tell me that doesn't scream "better 2022 Xhaka". My biggest issue is the potential to block ESR from getting into the squad if Arteta doesn't learn to rotate more. If he does, I could see a strong CM/AM rotation with MO, Havertz & ESR.

Assuming all rumored/reported deals get wrapped up, we have had a productive window even with no actual outgoing so far. Think the priority of Rice signing combined with our current DM depth is an indictment of an issue with Partey (legal and/or injury/conditioning). We are likely done with our big signings. Will be interesting to see how we fill the gaps after some outgoing.

Current presumed depth after these deals (minus rumored outgoing)...

GK - Ramsdale, Turner
LB - OZ, KT, Tomi
LCB - Gabi, Kiwior, Tomi
RCB - Saliba, White, Tomi
RB - White, Timber, Tomi
DM - Rice, Jorginho, El Neny
LCM/AM - Havertz, ESR
RCM/AM - MO, Vieira
LW - Martinelli, Trossard
RW - Saka, Nelson
ST - Jesus, Eddie

Expected significant outgoings - Nuno, Holding, Partey, Xhaka, Sambi, Balogun

Defense looks better as long as Tomi can stay healthy. Will be interesting if KT pushes to leave or if they give him more time this season.

Midfield isn't bad but (a) needs atleast one of ESR/Vieira to step up and (b) likely needs another DM or DM/CM to add to the rotation. Given Rice's injury history, it may be best to go the DM/CM route (what we hoped Sambi could have been).

Don't like the FW depth. Think we need a left-footed backup for Saka, move Nelson to LW and let Trossard be a AM/W/F9 super sub. Would also like a better backup ST but I don't see that happening this window.

I've been watch U21 Euros and ESR has looked great so far there in a similar 8 role to what Xhaka was doing this year, at least offensively. We do require some defensive work rate there as well, but the plus is on the left Martinelli helps a ton defensively.

We're a young-ish squad which just made the Champions League by 17 points with a core of absolute stars locked up for the next 4 or 5 years. I think part of the idea is we can "go for it" and even if Rice, or Havertz for that matter, backfires, we'll still be able to field a really competitive squad.

Rice might not be a $100 million player, but if he just plays like a $50 million player, don't you think we'll be fine when it comes to competing for the Champions League?
chjoak

Agreed. I honestly don't have a ton of hope for Vieira making a big jump. I think we could see improvement but I'm thinking his role next season will be similar to this season. I'm hoping ESR steps up to his potential and provides a legit 3rd CM/AM for rotation. Effectively ESR & Havertz rotate on the left, MO & Havertz rotate on the right and Vieira is there for cups, injury and spark off the bench.

I'm not so sure. The next "super league" may only be composed of those clubs owned by oligarchs and sports-washing nation states.

If he can just play the whole season like Partey played the first 20 games, that's a big upgrade
