As the calendar approaches the end of February and all relegation contenders have 13 matches remaining, it is time, again, to start the annual relegation watch. Now is when the bottom half in the league begin to focus more on survival and less on a top 6 spot.

This year's race really comes down to one teamFulham. If Fulham continue to play at their current pace then the race will be really interesting. If Fulham drop off then the relegation battle could be over in short order. Sheffield United and West Brom appear to be all but done, leaving the attention on the one remaining relegation spot, currently held by Fulham. As a Fulham supporter myself, I am cheering for their safety, but even more so, as a fan of a great relegation battle, I want them to make this an exciting finish for the bottom tier of the table.

Current Standings:

Club Points (All have played 25 matches)
15. Burnley 28
16. Brighton & Hove Albion 26
17. Newcastle 25
18. Fulham 22
19. West Bromwich Albion 14
20. Sheffield United 11

Burnley- As Burnley currently sit 6 points out of the final relegation spot, I felt it necessary to include them in the relegation discussion. The Clarets have been playing better as of late, claiming 9 points from their last 7 matches (2(W) 2(L) 3(T)) so they are almost outside the battle, but a bad weekend or two and they could find themselves fighting for survival. Burnley's remaining schedule has quite a few tough matches (Liverpool, West Ham, Leicester, Man United, Spurs, Arsenal and Everton) but they also get to play Newcastle, Fulham and Sheffield United. I have a feeling the Clarets will be a part of the relegation discussion for the remainder of the season.

Brighton & Hove Albion- It doesn't seem like a relegation battle unless Brighton are part of the discussion, as the Gulls have been relegation battle regulars since their EPL arrival in 2017. In 2018 the Gulls finished 15th and in 2019 they were the last club to survive relegation, finishing 17th. Last year the club hovered around relegation before finishing 15th. Here they are again, on the edge of the relegation battle, hoping to survive for another year in the EPL. The club has had a good run of form since the New year, claiming 11 points from their last 9 matches (3 (W) 2 (L) and 4 (T)). Their remaining schedule does have games against the top 4 current clubs (United, City, West Ham and Leicester) but they also play fellow relegation battlers West Brom, Sheffield and Newcastle. Brighton have been playing well, and I don't expect them to finish in the bottom 3, but you never know with the Gulls.

Newcastle United- It always amazes me how Newcastle just cannot seem to avoid a good relegation battle every few years. The Toons just cannot build on success and grow into a place among the top clubs, where they honestly should be. Newcastle have claimed only 3 points in 2021, going 1-9-0 in their last 10. That form, and Fulham's current run of good play, should have the Toon Army deeply concerned. Newcastle does have one of the easier remaining schedules, and they get a chance to play all 5 of the other relegation battlers in their last 11 matches. A season ending match against Fulham on May 23 looks particularly intriguing. I have a feeling Newcastle will be a part of this relegation watch through the end of the season, I just don't see enough talent on their roster or in their manager to avoid being in this battle for the duration.

Fulham- The Cottagers look to avoid being a one up and back down team for the second straight time following promotion, and truthfully the club should be nowhere near the bottom three given their recent form. They seem to have an innate ability to pull a draw out of what should be a sure win, leaving them part of the battle, and currently claiming the dreaded 18th position. Since the new year the club has claimed 11 points out of their last 10 matches (going 2-3-5 over that timeyes, 5 draws). If Fulham can turn draws into wins then they should move out of the relegation zone quite soon, but by this point in the season a team is what it is, and I have a feeling more anguishing draws are forthcoming. The schedule still has some tough matches (Man City, United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal) but they also get matches with Palace, Burnley and Newcastle. Hopefully the disappointment of too many draws does not lead Fulham back to relegation.

West Bromwich Albion- Last year's promotion seems like a distant memory, as West Brom finds itself 11 points behind 17th place Newcastle with 11 matches remaining. Although the club has played better as of late, it has been draws that were the improvement and not the necessary 3 point days. I am afraid it will be a one up and back down season for the Baggies, as they don't look like a club with enough tools to get in a battle for safety.

Sheffield United- Remember last season when the Blades fought all year for a place in Europe? Remember how proud we were of the newly promoted club for finishing 9th? Well, that is all but a distant memory as Sheffield United now sit on 11 points after 25 matches. Averaging less than a half a point per match is a sure way to find yourself in the Championship next year. There have been moments when you thought the club was going to turn it around, but those moments have been too few and far between, and with 13 matches remaining the Blades are already making Championship plans for next season.

Key Relegation Matches for this upcoming weekend:

Saturday
West Brom v. Brighton and Hove Albion (The Hawthorns, 9am CST, NBCSN)- If West Brom are to somehow make their relegation battle a real fight, then it better start this weekend, as the club will host Brighton and Hove Albion in a six point relegation battle. A loss would all but wrap it up for the Baggies while Brighton will desperately want to claim the full 3 points. The teams drew 1-1 at the Amex in October, a result that would not please either team this go around. Should be a good watch this weekend.

Newcastle v. Wolves (St. James' Park, 2 pm, Peacock)- Newcastle need to start collecting points in a bad way, and that won't be easy this weekend as the Toons welcome Wolverhampton to St. James' Park. The Wolves have gone 3-0-1 in their last 4 matches, so any points will be a good day for Newcastle. I look for a typical defensive effort from Steve Bruce's club, looking to steal a win off a counter attack. The clubs drew 1-1 at the Molineux in October, a result I am sure Newcastle would gladly take in this fixture.

Sunday
Crystal Palace v. Fulham (Selhurst Park, 6am, Peacock)- Fulham will make the short trip to South London to play Crystal Palace in the early Sunday game. Palace have claimed the last 3 matches against their London neighbors, so Fulham will want to end that streak, which includes a 2-1 Palace win at Craven Cottage back in October. Palace are 3-2 in their last 5, and sit just on the outside of the relegation battle themselves, so Palace will be looking to extend their point span over the Cottagers, who will travel to Selhurst Park desperate for 3 points themselves.

Tottenham Hotspur v. Burnley (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, 8am, NBCSN). The Spurs welcome Burnley to north London as both teams will be in desperate search of points. Tottenham Hotspur have won five of their six home Premier League matches against Burnley, scoring 16 goals and conceding just three in that time. Burnley are looking for their first top-flight away win against Spurs since October 1974. Spurs will be looking for a repeat of their first match this season against Burnley , when they claimed a 1-0 win at Turf Moor back in October. Tottenham have gone just 1-4 in their last five, so they will be looking to rebound on Sunday against the Clarets, who have managed a 1-1-3 record in their last 5.

Sheffield United v. Liverpool (Brammall Lane, 1:15 pm, Peacock). The Blades will host the reigning league champions on Sunday, as Liverpool will be hoping to change their recent form against a down and out Sheffield club. The Blades have lost 20 of their 25 Premier League matches this season (W3 D2) the fewest amount of matches a team has taken to reach 20 defeats in a single campaign in English top-flight history. Liverpool have won their last four Premier League matches against Sheff Utd, though those wins have been spread over the 2006/07, 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons. As bad as Sheffield United have been, both clubs come into this match with equal 1-4 records in their last 5 matches.

Let's get this relegation battle going and enjoy the weekend!

Once again, they dominate a game and yet just get 1 point to show for their hard work.

Weekend Results:

Saturday
West Brom 1-0 Brighton and Hove Albion. Brighton are beginning to have the look of an ill-fated club, destined to drop out of the EPL even though they play attractive and, should be game winning, soccer. West Bromwich Albion somehow claimed a first win in eight Premier League matches Saturday, knocking off Brighton & Hove Albion, 1-0, who missed two penalties and had a goal overturned. The Baggies took an 11th-minute lead when Kyle Bartley headed in Conor Gallagher's corner for his third goal of the season. Brighton won their first penalty after Okay Yokuslu's handball had been awarded but Pascal Gross' pk hit the bar. Lewis Dunk thought he had drawn Brighton level before half-time, but his quick free-kick was overturned by referee Lee Mason after consulting the VAR because he had blown his whistle a second time for it being taken too quickly just before the ball went in. Aaron Connolly and Joel Veltman both missed great chances for Brighton before Gross was fouled inside the penalty area by Conor Townsend for a second penalty chance, but Danny Welbeck to hit a post from the spot. West Brom stay 19th on 17 points, eight from safety and nine behind Brighton, who are 16th after a fourth match without victory.

Newcastle 1-1 Wolves. Ruben Neves scored a late goal to cancel out Jamaal Lascelles' second-half goal and earn Wolverhampton Wanderers a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United. Newcastle started well, with Miguel Almiron's curling effort hitting the post while Allan Saint-Maximim had a goal ruled out for offside, and the Toons took the lead on 52 minutes when Ryan Fraser crossed for Lascelles to powerfully head past Rui Patricio. Wolves equalised with a header of their own as Neves met Pedro Neto's cross in the 73rd minute. A fifth successive 1-1 draw between the sides means Newcastle stay 17th with 26 points. The real concern for Newcastle could be injuries to Almiron and Saint-Maximim, who both had to leave during the game.

Sunday
Crystal Palace 0-0 Fulham. Fulham came away with another draw, as they missed the chance to move within one point of safety. Palace had the better of the early play, with Andros Townsend's cross diverted on target by Fulham's Joachim Andersen, but Alphonse Areola was alert to keep out an own goal. Andersen had two chances of his own at the other end before half-time, missing on two headers from a Ademola Lookman's corner and cross. Fulham stepped up a gear in the second half but Guaita kept the hosts in the match. The Palace goalkeeper denied Tosin Adarabioyo's header from Lookman's free-kick before making a wonderful save to keep out Maja's close-range effort with 20 minutes remaining. Palace stay 13th with 33 points while Fulham remain 18th on 23 points, three behind Newcastle United.

Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Burnley. Gareth Bale, yes Gareth Bale, scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur comfortably returned to winning ways with a 4-0 victory over Burnley. Bale opened the scoring after only 68 seconds when he converted Son Heung-min's cross. Jay Rodriguez had a header saved at the other end before Spurs asserted their dominance. Bale sent a beautiful long pass to Harry Kane, who doubled the home side's lead in the 14th minute. Lucas Moura added a third in the 31st minute with a low shot from Sergio Reguilon's cross. Bale sealed the win with his second goal in the 55th minute, curling in after another assist from Son. The defeat keeps Burnley in the relegation discussion and in 15th place with 28 points, five points above the bottom three.

Sheffield United 0-2 Liverpool. Liverpool ended their four-match losing run with a 2-0 win at Sheffield United. Sheff Utd goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale kept his team in the match and frustrated Liverpool, as he made five first-half saves, including two in as many minutes to deny Mohamed Salah and Georginio Wijnaldum. But Liverpool eventually found a way past Ramsdale when Phil Jagielka's clearance from a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross fell perfectly for Jones, who claimed just his second Premier League goal. Oliver McBurnie missed a great chance to equalize, heading Oliver Norwood's cross wide, before Liverpool clinched the match when Roberto Firmino danced through the Sheff Utd defense and had his shot deflected in off Kean Bryan for an own goal. Sheff Utd stay bottom of the league, 15 points from safety.

Brighton the last 2 matches looked absolutely cursed. I have the same feeling that you do. The way it looks right now they have the bad juju that could sink them especially if Fulham turn a couple of their draws into wins.

Mid-Week Games

Games are coming hot and heavy right now, so we have mid week games this week with our relegation battlers:

Current Standings:

Club Points (All have played 26 matches)
15. Burnley 28
16. Brighton & Hove Albion 26
17. Newcastle 26
18. Fulham 23
19. West Bromwich Albion 17
20. Sheffield United 11

Wednesday

Burnley v. Leicester City (12pm, NBCSN, Turf Moor). The Clarets look to rebound from their weekend 4-0 defeat to Tottenham. While Leicester are looking to complete their first ever top-flight double over Burnley. Leicester has a phenomenal away record this season, as no team has won more away PL matches than the Foxes (W9 D3 L1). Leicester claimed a 4-2 victory over Burnley at King Power back in September.

Sheffield United v. Aston Villa (12 pm, Peacock, Brammall Lane). Sheffield United have had a terrible season, both home and away, and have lost 10 home league matches so far this season, only losing more in one season in their entire history, with 11 in the 2010/11 Championship campaign. However, the Blades have won their last two home league meetings with Aston Villa. Villa are looking to secure their first league double over Sheff Utd since the 1993/94 season, having claimed a 1-0 victory back in September at Villa Park. Villa are normally the club fighting to avoid relegation, but this season it appears they will get to worry more about catching teams in front of them and fighting for a spot in Europe, as they come into this match in 9th Place with 39 points.

Thursday

Fulham v. Tottenham Hotspur (12pm, Peacock, Craven Cottage). Fulham have conceded only one goal in their last five PL matches, keeping clean sheets in both at home, but the Cottagers have won just one of their last 14 PL derbies with Tottenham Hotspur (D3 L10). Harry Kane will be looking to build on his 2 goal performance over the weekend, and Fulham may be the right club for him to do so against, as he has scored in all of his four matches for Spurs against Fulham, producing six goals in total. Fulham need to turn draws into wins if they are to pull themselves out of the bottom three. The two clubs drew 1-1 just a month ago in North London.

West Bromwich Albion v. Everton (12pm, Peacock, The Hawthorns). West Brom will look to build on their victory over Brighton last weekend as they attempt to crawl out of a deep hole and back into the relegation battle. West Brom are looking to win back-to-back PL matches for the first time since May 2018. They are also aiming to keep three consecutive clean sheets in the competition for the first time since September 2015.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs one away goal to match Romelu Lukaku's Everton record of nine in a PL campaign.
Carlo Ancelotti's side have only failed to score in one of their 12 away matches this season, fewer than any PL side. Everton will be looking to repeat their early season performance against West Brom, when they claimed a 5-2 victory at Goodison Park in September.

Newcastle and Brighton both have the week off and will be preparing for their respective weekend matches.

Weekend Games

Saturday

Burnley v. Arsenal (6:30am, NBCSN, Turf Moor)---Burnley are looking to complete their first league double over Arsenal since 1962-63. Ashley Barnes is the only current member of Burnley to score in the league versus the Gunners. Arsenal are unbeaten in their last eight away league matches at Turf Moor (W4 D4), keeping a clean sheet in four of their last five. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored more PL goals against Burnley than he has versus any other side (7). Burnley claimed a 1-0 victory over the Gunners at the Emirates back in December.

Sheffield United v. Southampton (9am, NBCSN, Brammall Lane)---Sheffield United look to build on their mid-week win as they host the Saints on Saturday. Sheff Utd have lost two of their last three home league matches against Southampton. Southampton can secure a fourth successive league win over Sheff Utd for the first time since 1950. Southampton claimed a 3-0 win at St. Mary's back in December.

Brighton v. Leicester (2pm, Peacock, Amex Stadium)---Brighton are aiming for a first win in eight Premier League meetings with Leicester (D2 L5). Jamie Vardy has been involved in eight goals in his last six PL appearances for Leicester against Brighton (5 goals, 3 assists). Leicester thoroughly handled the Gulls when the two sides met at King Power Stadium in December, winning 3-0.

Sunday

West Bromwich Albion v. Newcastle (6am, NBCSN, The Hawthornes)---Big six-pointer this weekend, especially for West Brom, as they cannot afford to have 17th place Newcastle get further away. Of concern for West Bromwich Albion, the club have won none of their eight Premier League matches played on Sunday this season, drawing two and losing six. Sam Allardyce has won 13 PL matches against Newcastle United, more than he has versus any other opponent. Newcastle are aiming to complete their first PL double over West Brom since 2008/09, as they defeated West Brom 2-1 in December. Biggest relegation match of the weekend, as a West Brom win would pull them within six points of safety, but a loss would make it a 12 point gap and surely doom Albion to the Championship.

Liverpool v. Fulham (8 am, NBCSN, Anfield)---Fulham will travel to the north seeking to claim points over a suddenly reeling Liverpool side. It will be quite an aceivement for the Cottagers, as Liverpool have lost only one of their 23 top-flight home matches against Fulham (W16 D6). Fulham can be the first London club to win at Everton and Liverpool in one PL season since West Ham in 2015/16. Fulham's current seven-match unbeaten away run in the PL is their longest without a defeat in their top-flight history. The clubs fought to a 1-1 draw back in December at Craven Cottage.

Enjoy the weekend!

Weekend Results
Burnley 1-1 Arsenal. Arsenal gifted Burnley a goal and Chris Wood was the fortuitous one who earned the Clarets a draw with the Gunners that took them four points clear of the relegation zone. Arsenal took the lead in the sixth minute. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cut into the area and beat Nick Pope at his near post. Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka both had chances to double the lead but each hit the ball wide. In the 39th minute Arsenal were made to pay for missing their opportunities when Granit Xhaka's attempted pass in his own area hit Wood and went in. Burnley nearly claimed all three point when Erik Pieters' fabulous 30-yard volley was tipped over by Bernd Leno, who also denied Wood a second goal with his legs shortly after. Pieters was shown a red card and Arsenal awarded a penalty as referee Andre Marriner deemed he had blocked Nicolas Pepe's shot on the line with his arm. But the decision was overturned after VAR correctly determined it was not handball. Arsenal almost snatched a win in stoppage time as Ben Mee blocked Aubameyang's shot before Dani Ceballos's strike hit a post. A fifth home draw in a row keeps Burnley 15th on 30 points.

Sheffield United 0-2 Southampton. A James Ward-Prowse penalty and a superb Che Adams strike led Southampton to a 2-0 win at Sheffield United for the Saints first victory in 10 Premier League matches. Nathan Tella created Southampton's opener on 32 minutes as he was fouled by Ethan Ampadu on a counter-attack and Ward-Prowse converted the penalty. David McGoldrick missed a great chance to draw Sheff Utd level just before the break, shooting straight at Fraser Forster. Che Adams doubled the lead with a fierce half-volley from outside the area for his fourth goal against his former club. Sheff Utd remain bottom of the table with 14 points.

Brighton 1-2 Leicester. Brighton seem to have all the markings of a team that plays beautiful football, but cannot find a way to earn points. I hate it for them, but they almost appear doomed to relegation, seemingly grasping defeat from the jaws of victory on a weekly basis. Daniel Amartey scored three minutes from time to earn Leicester City a 2-1 victory at Brighton & Hove Albion. Adam Lallana gave the Seagulls a 10th-minute lead, slotting a low shot for his first Brighton goal. Kelechi Iheanacho found the side-netting early in the second half before drawing Leicester level with a chipped finish in the 62nd minute. Schmeichel made a wonderful save low on another Lallana strike before Amartey struck the winner. Sanchez flapped at Marc Albrighton's corner to allow a stooping Amartey to head into the net and extend Leicester's unbeaten league away run to 10 matches. A third straight defeat leaves Brighton in 17th, only out of the relegation zone due to goal difference.

West Bromwich Albion 0-0 Newcastle. If you woke up at 6am on Sunday morning expecting a battle between these two relegation contenders, well all I can say is that I am sorry. West Bromwich Albion missed the opportunity to make up ground on relegation rivals Newcastle United as the two clubs had a pillow fight on way to a goalless draw at The Hawthorns. I am not sure any unbiased neutral could have watched this match and the Fulham-Liverpool match and come away thinking that Newcastle deserve to avoid relegation at Fulham's expense. Newcastle looked dreadful, with no imagination or creativity as they were content to claim a point away at surely relegated West Brom. I would give some match highlights, but frankly there were none. Newcastle's draw moves them up to 16th on 27 points, one above Brighton & Hove Albion in 17th. West Brom are on 18 points, eight from safety and almost assured relegation at this point. I am actively rooting for Steve Bruce and his club to now claim the final relegation spot so that this type of tactics are not rewarded with a spot in the EPL.

Liverpool 0-1 Fulham. Unlike Newcastle, Fulham went on the road looking for 3 points and were rewarded for their courage and effort. Fulham went level on points with Brighton & Hove Albion as Mario Lemina's strike earned the Cottagers a 1-0 win and extended Liverpool's losing run at Anfield. Josh Maja twice went close for the visitors early on, first shooting wide from Kenny Tete's cross before being denied by Alisson at point-blank range. Ademola Lookman also had a close-range strike deflected over by Neco Williams. Fulham's impressive first-half display was finally rewarded in stoppage time, when Lemina took the ball from Salah and drilled in a low shot following a corner. Liverpool improved in the second half, with the returning Diogo Jota having a volley brilliantly saved by Alphonse Areola. Sadio Mane's looping header struck a post and Xherdan Shaqiri also shot narrowly wide but Fulham held on for their second Premier League win at Anfield. Fulham are unbeaten in their last eight away league matches and stay 18th, but are now level with Brighton on 26 points, having played one match more.

At the other end of that table, it looks like Wednesday is headed down. From what I can tell Sunderland has been playing really well and is nipping on a return to the Championship. Would also really like to see Portsmouth promoted.

And Tranmere is at least in a playoff position for promotion back to League 1.

It was interesting that they didn't seem to take much of a look at that handball. The EPL has completely botched what is and is not "deliberate handling". They have way overthought what is and isn't intentional handling of the ball.

Friday

Newcastle v. Aston Villa (St. James' Park, 2pm, Peacock). Newcastle will be looking to right their ship and find some offense when Villa visit the northeast on Friday evening. Newcastle are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League home meetings with Villa. Villa are looking to complete their first league double over Newcastle since 2004/05, as they claimed a 2-0 victory over the Magpies in January at Villa Park. Only Manchester City (15) have kept more PL clean sheets than Villa's 14 this season. Eight of those shutouts for the Villans have been away from home, more than any other side. Newcastle will be without Callum Wilson (hamstring), Allan Saint-Maximin (groin) and Miguel Almiron (knee), while Jack Grealish misses out for Villa.

Saturday
Crystal Palace v. West Bromwich Albion (Selhurst Park, 9am, NBCSN). West Brom are 8 points away from safety with 10 matches remaining, so they must begin to pile on wins if they are to have any hope of avoiding relegation. Palace will be licking their chops at the idea of a West Brom visit to south London as the Eagles have won three of their last four Premier League meetings with West Bromwich Albion (D1), winning 5-1 at The Hawthorns in the reverse fixture back in December. Wilfried Zaha has scored four goals in his last four PL matches against West Brom. After a run of eight league matches between December and February in which they conceded at least twice, West Brom have conceded just two goals in their last five EPL matches.

Everton v. Burnley (Goodison Park, 11:30am, Peacock). Burnley travel to Liverpool looking for three points and a chance to inch their way further clear of the relegation zone. It wont be an easy trip for the Clarets, as Everton have won five of their six Premier League home matches against Burnley. Alex Iwobi will be looking for a big day, as against no side has the Everton striker been involved in more PL goals than he has against Burnley, with two goals and two assists. Burnley are aiming to win at both Merseyside clubs in one season for the first time, following their 1-0 triumph at Liverpool in January. The two clubs drew 1-1 at Turf Moor back in December.

Fulham v. Manchester City (Craven Cottage, 2pm, Peacock). Fulham look to continue their run of good form as they welcome the soon to be champions to west London. Fulham can become only the second Premier League team ever to beat the champions and leaders in consecutive matches, following their 1-0 victory at Liverpool (Everton defeated Chelsea and Manchester United in February 2010). The Cottagers have won three of their last six PL contests (D2 L1), more than they had in their previous 24 matches. They have also kept five clean sheets in their last seven league encounters, one more than in their first 21 matches. Manchester City have won their last six meetings with Fulham, scoring 18 times without conceding, and have lost just one of their 13 trips to Craven Cottage. City claimed a 2-0 victory in December when the clubs met at the Etihad.

Sunday
Southampton v. Brighton & Hove Albion (St. Mary's, 6am, Peacock). The Saints welcome Brighton in a battle of the south coast for the early Sunday game. Southampton will be happy to see the Seagulls, as they are unbeaten in all seven of their Premier League meetings with Brighton, their best 100 per cent record. The Saints have kept a clean sheet in all five of their PL home wins so far this season. Brighton have lost their last 3 EPL matches, and have not lost four in a row since April 2019. Southampton claimed all three points in a 2-0 victory over Brighton back in December at the Amex.

Leicester v. Sheffield United (King Power Stadium, 8am, Peacock). Leicester will look to put hapless Sheffield United out of their misery. Sheffield United are playing out the string, and Leicester are looking to lock up a Champions League position, so it should be a route.

Enjoy the weekend!

Some Big results over the weekend led to some shake up at the bottom. Was a good weekend of games, very entertaining for sure, unless you are a Newcastle fan, and then there is nothing entertaining in watching a Newcastle game right now.

Newcastle 1-1 Aston Villa. Every time that I watch a Newcastle game I thank my lucky stars that I am not a Newcastle fan. I cannot imagine sitting through a Steve Bruce, park 10 in the box, game as a supporter. It would drive me mad. Newcastle again sat back for a large portion of the game (a home game against a mid-table Villa team who was without their best player in Jack Grealish) until the 86th minute when a cross from Matt Targett was met by Ollie Watkins, whose header hit the knee of defender Ciaran Clark and deflected in off the underside of the crossbar to give Villa a 1-0 lead. Steve Bruce at that point decided that offense might be a good idea and was saved a point when Jamaal Lascelles struck with the last attack of the match, giving Newcastle United a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. Newcastle are now 17th, with 28 points, moving two points clear of the relegation zone.

Crystal Palace 1-0 West Bromwich Albion. Luka Milivojevic's first-half penalty earned Crystal Palace a first win in four matches. West Brom dominated the opening 45 minutes at Selhurst Park, with their best chance falling to Okay Yokuslu, who shot over in the area. But in the 37th minute Milivojevic converted from the spot for his first goal of the season after a VAR review found Darnell Furlong had handled Wilfried Zaha's cross. Sam Johnstone denied Palace a second with a brilliant save from Christian Benteke's fierce strike. West Brom's first shot on target came in the 72nd minute, when Mbaye Diagne's header was saved by Guaita. They were unable to find an equalizer, leaving them in 19th on 18 points, ten points from safety and effectively eliminated.

Everton 1-2 Burnley. If you haven't seen the spectacular strike from Dwight McNeil for Burnley then I suggest you go find it, watch and enjoy, as his beautiful goal proved decisive allowing Burnley to beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park. Burnley went ahead on 13 minutes with Chris Wood scoring for the second successive match.
They doubled their advantage 11 minutes later through McNeil's wonder goal. The winger turned past Allan before curling in a 25-yard shot in off the crossbar. Dominic Calvert-Lewin's header reduced the deficit for Everton.
The home side pressed for an equalizer after the break as Andre Gomes and Calvert-Lewin both came close.
The win keeps Burnley 15th on 33 points, but more importantly seven above the relegation zone.

Fulham 0-3 Manchester City. Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero scored on their return to Manchester City's starting line-up as the City won 3-0 at Fulham. The pair were among seven changes to Pep Guardiola's starting XI as Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling were all rested. Fulham started brightly in a first half of few opportunities, while Ferran Torres and Bernardo Silva had shots saved by Alphonse Areola.
John Stones made the breakthrough when he headed in Joao Cancelo's 47th-minute free-kick from close range.
Jesus attacked a poor pass by Ivan Cavaleiro to round Areola and slot in the second nine minutes later, before Aguero registered his first Premier League goal since January 2020 with a penalty after Torres had been fouled by Tosin Adarabioyo. Fulham missed out on a chance to move out of the relegation zone, remaining 18th on 26 points.

Sunday
Southampton 1-2 Brighton & Hove Albion. Brighton & Hove Albion gave their hopes of staying up a major boost by beating Southampton for the first time in the Premier League. Brighton went into the match above the bottom three on goal difference alone after a three-match losing run. But they made a great start at St Mary's Stadium when Lewis Dunk headed in Pascal Gross's 16th-minute corner for his fourth goal of the season. Southampton equalized 11 minutes later when Dunk could not clear Ryan Bertrand's header across goal and Che Adams volleyed in to score for a third successive match. Gross was then denied when one-on-one with Fraser Forster before Brighton's winner came in the 56th minute with Leandro Trossard smashing in after a clever touch by Danny Welbeck. A first victory in eight attempts against Southampton lifts Brighton to 16th on 29 points. They move above their next opponents Newcastle United and three points clear of Fulham. With the loss Southampton will join the relegation battle for now, as they are level with Burnley on 33 points

Leicester 5-0 Sheffield United. Sheffield fired Chris Martin and gave up on the season, getting thrashed 5-0. If you want a more in depth analysis of a Sheff Utd then you are one sick individual.

While we didn't have many EPL relegation matches this weekend, we did have 2, and those two were important ones for the race. Brighton claimed a vital three points and got us close to calling this thing a 2 team race for that final relegation spot. Fulham missed an opportunity to get out of the relegation zone before the off-week for international matches. Newcastle have a game in hand and a 2 point cushion over Fulham, but I haven't seen anything from Newcastle to suggest that they would take advantage of that game in hand.

Weekend Relegation Results:

Fulham 1-2 Leeds United. Patrick Bamford and Raphinha scored as Leeds United stopped Fulham from making up ground in the relegation battle with a 2-1 victory at Craven Cottage. Marcelo Bielsa's visitors had two goals ruled out for offside early on, before Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier made a superb save to deny Josh Maja. Bamford put Leeds ahead in the 30th minute when he beautifully fired in Jack Harrison's low cross.
Fulham leveled the match shortly thereafter with Joachim Andersen volleying in his first goal for the club from an Ademola Lookman corner. In the 58th minute Leeds broke on a counter and Raphinha ran on to a pass from Bamford to finish past Alphonse Areola and secure the visitors three points. Fulham stay 18th on 26 points, two below Newcastle.

Brighton 3-0 Newcastle. Brighton & Hove Albion claimed a vital three points in the battle to avoid relegation, beating Newcastle United 3-0 the Amex. Brighton dominated the match as Newcastle, again, seemed happy to sit in a defensive shell just around their own penalty box. The Gulls finally made their dominance count with a goal in first-half stoppage time. Leandro Trossard controlled Joel Veltman's long pass and arrowed a shot into the bottom-right corner. Ryan Fraser's nearly leveled the match when his shot cannoned off a Brighton post shortly after the break but, in the ensuing counter-attack, Danny Welbeck doubled the hosts' lead, as he cut in from the left before finding the net for his third league goal of the season. Neal Maupay made it 3-0 midway through the half when he met Pascal Gross's cross with a first-time volley. Brighton recorded their first league double over Newcastle since 1978/79, and more importantly the result keeps the Seagulls 16th with 32 points from 29 matches, six more than 18th-placed Fulham and four more than Newcastle. Steve Bruce's side lie 17th with 28 points from 29 matches.

As a die hard Newcastle fan I hate watching Steve Bruce coach. He is clearly an inept coach with no tactics. The supporters plead for transfer market backing and we have gone out and made some decent signings in recent windows but have utterly wasted that talent under Bruce. Rafa Benitez took a lesser skilled side and placed 10th after we came up in 17/18 season. Mind blowing that our owner Mike Ashley stands behind the coach. If Bruce isnt gone the day after the season ends, whether we stay up of not, it will be clear to me that Newcastle are destined for relegation.

Here's to hoping the Takeover finally happens this Summer.

Also have to say that the relegation race has been more exciting in the last few seasons than the title race.

Absolutely. The race this year and last was over in January. 2019 was the nail biter down to the end and 2018 was City boat racing everyone.

Friday:
Fulham v. Wolverhampton Wanderers (2pm, Craven Cottage, Peacock)--Fulham have to start getting points and keep Newcastle in their sights. Wolves are just outside the relegation zone so they will head to London looking to extend their lead on the 18th place club. Wolverhampton defeated the Cottagers 1-0 at the Molinieux in October.

Sunday:

Burnley v. Newcastle (6am, Turf Moor, Peacock)--Epic six pointer on Sunday morning between two clubs looking to extend their lead over the relegation zone. A win by Burnley and they are almost clear of the relegation battle, and a win by Newcastle could draw Burnley right back in and give Newcastle some much needed space from the 18th position. Newcastle won the reverse fixture 3-1 in October at St. James' Park.

Sheffield United v. Arsenal (1pm, Brammall Lane, Peacock)--I cannot imagine there will be a lot of eyeballs on this game between lowly Sheffield United, who are essentially relegated already, and mid-table, underperforming, boring, Arsenal. If you are looking forward to this match then I recommend some form of therapy.

Monday:

West Brom Albion v. Southampton (12pm, The Hawthornes, NBCSN)--West Brom and Southampton are both coming off big wins last weekend, with West Brom beating Chelsea and Southampton beating Brighton. West Brom essentially need to win out to have a shot at avoiding relegation, while Southampton have pulled themselves out of the relegation discussion with their win last weekend. The Saints claimed a 2-0 win over West Brom at St. Mary's back in October.

Brighton and Hove Albion v. Everton (2:15pm, Amex Stadium, NBCSN)-- Brighton look to recover from last weeks defeat and stay above the relegation battle when they welcome the Toffees to the South Coast. Everton won the earlier match between the two in October at Goodison Park, beating Brighton 4-2.

Enjoy the weekend!

Well this weekend was a good one if you are fan of Newcastle, a bad one if you are a fan of Fulham, Brighton or Burnley, and generally a terrible one if you are a fan of a good relegation battle. Newcastle's victory tied with Fulham's loss means that there is a six point gap between the two. One important point that we need to remember is that Fulham and Newcastle play the last weekend, so if Fulham can scratch 3 points closer heading into the final weekend then we could have quite a finish.

Weekend Results

Fulham 0-1 Wolverhampton. Adama Traore scored his first Premier League goal since December 2019 with a late winner as Wolverhampton Wanderers claimed a 1-0 win at Craven Cottage, breaking the Cottagers hearts in the process. Fulham created the first chance in the 28th minute when Ruben Loftus-Cheek flashed a header from Antonee Robinson's left-wing cross inches wide. Willian Jose tappeared to put the Wolves ahead right at the end of the half, but his header was disallowed after a VAR review ruled Daniel Podence to have been offside before providing the assist. Rui Patricio made a smart stop to keep out USMNT Robinson's right-footed shot with 10 minutes remaining. But, deep in added time, Traore hammered a rising shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Fulham's fourth successive defeat leaves them 18th on 26 points, six behind Newcastle United who also have a match in hand.

Burnley 1-2 Newcastle. Allan Saint-Maximin came on as a sub and scored one goal and created another as Newcastle United moved six points clear of the bottom three with a come from behind win at Turf Moor.
Matej Vydra had put Burnley ahead in the first half, slicing home Chris Wood's cutback for his third goal in five matches. Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka made three great saves before the game turned in Newcastle's favor with subs Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson entering the match. Less than two minutes after coming on, Saint-Maximin set up Jacob Murphy to slam a shot past Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who started for the injured Nick Pope. Five minutes later Saint-Maximin completed the comeback with a magnificent run, beginning in his own half, tricking past James Tarkowski and then scoring from just inside the box. Newcastle climb to 32 points, behind 16th-placed Brighton & Hove Albion only on goal difference, and only one point behind Burnley in 15th.

Sheffield United 0-3 Arsenal. If Sheffield United done yet?!?!?! I am ready to quit giving updates on a club with zero shot at avoiding relegation. Please put them out of their misery. Arsenal kicked their teeth in this weekend and the Blades need the season to end...soon.

West Bromwich 3-0 Southampton. Unlike Sheffield United, West Brom is not going quietly into relegation. Goals by Matheus Pereira, Matt Phillips and Callum Robinson kept West Bromwich Albion's slim relegation hopes alive with a 3-0 win against Southampton. Pereira put Sam Allardyce's side ahead in the 31st minute, drawing a foul from goalkeeper Fraser Forster before beating him from the resulting penalty kick. Phillips added a second goal three minutes later with a wonderful close-range finish from Diagne's deep ball. Robinson fired West Brom 3-0 up in the 69th minute when he rifled in a left-foot shot beyond Forster. West Brom remain 19th, but their first back-to-back wins since May 2018 got them to 24 points, eight points from safety with seven matches to play.

Brighton & Hove Albion 0-0 Everton. Brighton & Hove Albion moved seven points clear of the relegation zone with a draw against Everton at the Amex Stadium. In an open first half Everton's Tom Davies glanced Seamus Coleman's left-wing cross wide before Neal Maupay's close-range shot for Brighton was blocked by Yerry Mina.
Yves Bissouma's spectacular bicycle kick attempt landed on the roof of the net and Brighton began to dominate in the second half, with Jakub Moder sweeping two attempts over the bar before Coleman blocked Adam Lallana's effort. Bissouma then drove into the box and teed up Maupay with 14 minutes left but he fired over, as did Lallana twice late in the game. Everton substitute Alex Iwobi nearly won all three points for the Toffees it in added time, but his attempt narrowly cleared the crossbar. The draw moves the Seagulls up one place to 15th on 33 points, seven clear of third-from-bottom Fulham.
