First, it was nice to finally beat Tennessee after an abysmal record against them over the years. The Vols have embarrassed A&M the last several games in blowout fashion, but tonight A&M was simply too much in the middle of the field and outclassed them with talent almost across the board. Also, it was difficult to follow much of the match because of the junior high production quality, a truly ridiculous streaming broadcast by the Vols athletic department. Have they ever heard of zooming in to see the action? We are spoiled at A&M. But a few thoughts anyway:
Carroll did return tonight but it was clear she is not 100% yet. Doesn't have the same speed on the ball as the first game, although she did have a few good maneuvers in the box to set up some crosses. I really think we should either leave Olivieri up top along with her, or Geczik needs to start in place of Russell. Geczik took advantage of her limited minutes tonight and played well, scoring 2 goals. While Russell is quick, she sometimes struggles with possession and isn't really a scorer, which is kind of the point of an attacking player. The first goal by Geczik was obviously a fluke goal on a mistake by the GK, but she was in position to take advantage of it. The second goal was really well played off a long through ball by Sample off a corner and it hit Geczik in stride behind the defense and she made a nice move on the GK and buried it. The final goal was a really nice goal for McCain off a header in the box, something she has struggled with at times this season, but she hit it perfectly this time off a great cross by Ziemer.
The box formation was clogged up in the opening 20 minutes or so as the Vols did a good job of pressing and attacking our backs with the ball and causing some chaos there. Also the midfield didn't really have the movement needed to make quick passes work in traffic, but when they started slotting some long balls forward, it opened up the field and the Vols backed off a bit. The rest of the game was pretty much domination of possession, which we've become accustomed to seeing now from this group. Olivieri was okay tonight, but I'd still rather see her more forward in the attack. Ziemer had another strong game the defensive mid position and is starting to really emerge for us this season.
The back line was good up the middle with Sample having a strong effort. Smith didn't seem quite as solid but certainly not a bad game. We need to get Lopez wide more often to let her cross the ball in the box. Let her play to her strengths. Kolb had some errant passes tonight that could have been costly. And it was good to see Burbank get the start and she played well, except the goal given up late can't rebound off her like that for the easy tap in, although the defense in front of her got a bit lazy in their defending off a long ball.
The team did seem to take the foot off the gas in the last 20 minutes and it cost us a goal. But can't complain about a 3-1 win on the road. Coach Penski is a big whiner and deserved that yellow card tonight. That was nice to see. This is a fun to watch and we score a lot of goals. The scary thing is that we can get even better going forward if we finish some more chances in front of goal.
