As a relegation watcher it doesn't get any better than this final weekend. Three teams looking to claim the final spot in next year's EPL! Should be an absolute wonderful Sunday morning (and this doesn't even include the battle at the top for the final Champions League spots). Even better is all EPL matches will be aired simultaneously on the NBC networks.
Current Relegation Standings:
Club Games Played Points Goal Diff.
17. Aston Villa 37 34 -26
18. Watford 37 34 -27
19. Bournemouth 37 31 -27
20. Norwich 35 21
Villa currently have the last safe spot, but just on goal difference. Bournemouth need a win and for Watford and Villa to lose to claim the last position. Because goal difference is so close, it really will be a great battle, no one has to win by 10 goals or avoid a 9 goal loss, it is truly a win or die type situation.
Sunday's Games:
Arsenal v. Watford (Emirates Stadium, 10am, Golf Channel). Arsenal will be looking for a response after losing to Aston Villa. Watford are currently 18th, below Aston Villa on goal difference, and will need to better Villa's result by two or more goals should they both win. A draw would keep them up if Villa cannot gain a point. Arsenal are unbeaten in their last eight Premier League outings at Emirates Stadium (W6 D2), with the Gunners netting 18 goals and conceding just five in that run. The Gunners have won five of their six Premier League home fixtures against Watford (L1), keeping a clean sheet in each victory. Watford have conceded at least once in each of their last nine Premier League matches. No side is on a longer current run without a clean sheet in the competition. Watford will need to come out on the offensive, looking to do to Arsenal what Villa did in the mid-week game. The two clubs battled to a 2-2 draw back in September.
Everton v. Bournemouth (Goodison Park, 10am, CNBC). Everton ended a run of four matches without a win by beating Sheffield United 1-0 in midweek and will be looking to end their season with a home victory. Bournemouth will hope to complete a league double over the Toffees and hope results elsewhere go their way to escape the bottom three. Everton have won all four of their Premier League home contests against Bournemouth, netting at least twice each time (12 goals in total). Under Carlo Ancelotti, the Toffees are unbeaten in all nine of their Premier League matches at Goodison Park. Bournemouth need to win to have any hope of extending their five-year stay in the Premier League. The Cherries will need to claim a Premier League double against Everton for the first time after a 3-1 win at the Vitality Stadium earlier this season.
West Ham v. Aston Villa (London Stadium, 10am, NBCSN). Aston Villa face West Ham United knowing their Premier League safety will be confirmed if they match Watford's result at Arsenal, who they sit above in 17th on goal difference, providing they don't both lose and AFC Bournemouth win at Everton. The Hammers, who drew 1-1 at Manchester United in midweek, target a third win in four matches. West Ham are unbeaten in their last four home league matches against Aston Villa (W2 D2), with the Hammers keeping a clean sheet each time. The Hammers have won their final-day match in the last three seasons, while Villa have failed to win any of their last eight. Aston Villa have won two of their last three Premier League matches, as many as they had in their previous 15 in the competition. The two clubs drew 0-0 in September when they met at Villa Park.
All three teams are playing clubs who themselves have little to play for, and all three are on the road, so will be an interesting day to see what lineups the managers throw out, who is interested in playing and who is not.
Enjoy the Weekend!
