What happened? I only saw the score; was watching Gold Cup.

SKC was red carded in the 15th minute... last defender (Sinovic vs. Barrios). The match went to extra time scoreless. FCD had 2 red cards in extra time... the first was a bicycle (Urruti) that clocked the defender (Opara) in the head; the second was violent conduct (Javier Morales) on a breakaway. That's only the Cliff Notes version of an absolutely crazy match.

I realize you never take intent into play but on the Urruti play the defender was just as much at fault going in the way he did.

Umm no

But a red card seems harsh considering the defender put himself at risk by jumping laterally at the ball. I think some refs could consider this situation a Dangerous Play by the defender.

eta: after reading another recap, I now realize that was Urruti's second booking of the game, not a straight red.

For what it's worth, Urruti was distraught about injuring Opara. He could be seen saying, "I didn't see him." Urruti waited outside SKC's locker room for news about Opara's condition.

You can see in the clip that Urruti couldn't possibly have seen him. I'm not sure what could have been done to prevent the injury, other than outlawing bicycle kicks. Hopefully Opara will be fine.

Opara suffered a "grade 3" concussion. Concussions like this ended the careers of Taylor Twellman and Ugo Ihemelu. Zach Loyd hasn't played since the concussion he suffered in last year's USOC.
