I do GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control), which is mostly concerned with planning the trajectory of the rocket, rendezvous maneuvers with the International Space Station, etc. So we look at the math and run simulations, then tell the propulsion guys the amount of thrust we need to get where we're going.

The coolest thing IMO is that SpaceX (who I interviewed with) is trying to make their rockets reusable, which means being able to land them after they separate from the payload in the upper atmosphere. No one else in the world is trying to do it, because it's so challenging, but SpaceX is getting close! They're launching on the 16th, and will be trying to land on a moving barge in the ocean. Here's a CGI video showing what they want to one day accomplish:

My dad is an aerospace engineer and now in management at a national lab which does projects for most government agencies and branches of the armed services.

Our family vacations included trips to naval and airforce bases throughout the 50 states and usually included a launch or intercept of some kind. Coolest trip (in my opinion) was out to Kauai, but I never got to accompany him out to the Aleutians or a certain site in the Nevada desert.

Sounds like an awesome childhood!

There were a few perks.

Of course, we didn't get to go on all the trips, so dad was away quite a bit growing up.
