Just to get a quick real answer it, it is because the line men (except at the point of attack) allow the down line men to come through with minimal blocking and move to the second level immediately. Kinda similar to a shovel pass/HB screen (which I think would be more effective)

When it works: The HB is given the ball with a huge hole. This is why when it works, it works big time.

When it doesn't work aka the majority of the time: The line men that get through get to the HB before the play has developed.

Surely, it prolly has something to do with the fact that both the QB and the RB are standing right next to each other so the DL can concentrate on one small area after the snap and run to that point to make the tackle. I call it the hot potato draw. McGee says, here take this B*tch before I get smashed, Goodson summarily gets smoked by 4 D Lineman. Helluva play Fran & Ko have drawn up there.

The QB makes the read by looking at the end. I think, technically, it is an option.

regular draw = works sometimes
smoke draw = works never

Fran developed this as the counter to the rest of our offense which they collectively call mirrors.

I always thought the point of a screen like that was to get all the d-linemen running at the QB and then have him toss it to someone that is clear of them and has blockers to go for a big gain.

If Goodson and McGee are standing still right next to eachother, where is the advantage in that? If they're running after McGee it won't be much harder to tackle the guy right next to him. Also, they're probably coached well enough to know that if a few of them are busting in there for one to be prepared to tackle Goodson just in case McGee gives him the ball.

It has a chance of working if the DL think the play is a pass and focus mainly on the QB. However, since our passing game does not make a defense respect the pass, draws are not a very good idea this year.
