I'm not sure how this is all measured but does the "db meter" have to be in a certain spot for us to compare these measurements? Is it directly in front of the student section, in the middle of the field, or in the reserved seat area?

I saw some posted that 3 db equals doubling the volume but remember the that the volume goes down by square of the distance. So where was the measurement made?

This is a great idea!!

When the South Zone is put into place the numbers will jump considerably too, as the "noise" will be captured...

This is the only explicable reason Denver and LSU have higher numbers than Kyle Field...

I think the reciever for the meter should be in front of the student section as close to the field as possible though. Either that or on the North goalpost like someone else said. It would definately be louder in front of the student section though. I think this should be done there will be a huge difference.

I like the idea. I think it would keep the crown more involved.

Maybe there should be 2 receivers. Put one in front of the student section, and another in front of the Former Student section. THen we'll really know who is loudest at the games.

I can see it now:

Students: 120dBs
Former Students: 30dBs

I think it would be pretty neat quirk that would add even more character to Kyle Field. I just don't see why anybody would be against it if it is only used in key times in the game.

I'm not really for or against it.

A) It seems kind of cheesy.
A1) It might get people involved.
B) Players might like it.
B1) Players might think it's stupid especially when (like the other night) we don't break 100 for a game.

While noise used to be a BIG factor for games, most teams use some sort of signal system which renders the whole thing void. I mean you saw Montana State. They weren't phased by it at all. Tech has been playing well through it for years now.

However, doing yells during the opponent's offensive series might help more. It worked wonders on our offense the other night. You can't do much better than 1 for 1.

We're definitely gonna need to develop a new yell... we'll call it "The Kyle Field Decibel Yell".

"Why, when I was your age...we didn't need them decibel reader meter things. We were just loud and we knew it."

Actually, I think that would be cool.

Does anyone else have any suggestions about this topic

It's a good idea --- but how do we get this from an idea on a message board to actually happening? That's what needs to be brainstormed.

For those wondering, the decibel meter was on the track in front of the band and I got to talk to the guy operating the thing. He said the device was worth about $120,000, so it isn't something you can whip up out of spare parts from Radio Shack.

As for its location, yes, the distance from the stands WILL affect its readings, but putting it in the North endzone will allow for reflected sound to amplify and enhance the readings. I say we get it! C'mon Dollar Bill!!! fork over some dough and let's get ourselves a built-in decibel meter!!!

The ribbon boards would be perfect for a decible meter!
This needs to get to Bill Byrne ASAP

The meter should be read from the opposing teams bench.

I sent Bill Byrne an email about the decibel meter but haven't gotten anything back yet. Is there any other way we can get this to someone with some power to enforce it? I'm not too worried about the high reading just as long as it is consistant so we can compare it to readings in the past and get louder cause we know that we can. If this got put in it would be awesome so let me know how we can do it. Thanks

I sent an email last year to Bill Byrne when this same discussion came up. The response was from one of the assistants and said that after the current field renovations they would visit new ideas for Kyle. A DB meter was on their list.

I sent an e-mail as well when the ribbon boards were being put up. I still don't think that the installation would be a big deal. All it has to be is a number on one of the corners of the ribbon board. Hell, they just used the ribbon boards to show "Montana State Bobcats vs Texas Aggies" and ads this week. They might as well show a number.

I'm no expert but I really don't see this thing costing $120K. Seems like $5K max would cover the cost of the microphone, the meter, any additional hardware and the time to integrate it into the video system (hardware installation and programming labor).

Thats cool that you got an email back I wonder if they are still thinking about doing it. Thats what I was thinking just like a number somewhere on the boards or on the TV. I want enough people to be talking about doing it so it might be moved up on their list of things to do.

I don't think it would be very expensive. Get a dB meter, and then get someone to write a little software with a control box for the ribbon boards, so someone on the Ribbon Board crew can flip a switch to multiplex between the advertising program and the Noise meter.

$5K sounds incredibly expensive for something like that. Why not contract it to the College of Engineering, and let it be someone's Senior Design project?
