I don't know if ya'll remember this or not but a few years ago they installed a decibel meter at Kyle Field and that was one of the loudest times I remember besides the OU game a couple years ago. I think they should install a permanent decibel meter and display it on all the defensive plays. Tell me what ya'll think.

since everyone is staring at the jumbotron, it might actually help. and you could put up the records to motivate the students. of course, i really wish that we didnt have to do that. I had really good seats to the game and i caught myself looking up to the second and third decks and saw a majority of the students not cheering, but i'm sure it will get better

If the university did that and it made the offensive team unable to hear the snap count, could it cause a penalty to be given if KYLE officials had something to do with "noise" that led to the offensive team unable to snap the ball?

Before you TexAgers start, I have seen the video on Youtube with the t.u. fheg waiting to snap the ball and then getting sacked so please dont post it thinking i havent.

I remember that. People kept yelling louder and louder while looking at the meter on the Jumbotron..

What game are you comparing to the OU game of several years ago?

I believe we hit 112 on that meter. It was the OU game that we lost when Gameday was here when Torrance Marshall blocked Farris in the back on the int. return for a TD.

FYI, Oregon hit 120 on a meter last year.

was it against VaTech in 2002 or OU in 2000? I think they were trying to see if we could break the Guinness World Record.

You know, I remember posting this a few weeks ago, and got blasted for being too "new army" and all those comments. I support it, and I really think it would help get us louder.

But w/e. Flame away again.

I'd love to have a permanent decibel meter at Kyle... What I don't want is for the Jumbotron to flash stupid "get loud" messages like they do at pretty much every other sporting event in the country. It's pathetic for a crowd to require a flashing "make some noise" graphic in order for them to get loud at the proper time. This also applies to tu's stupid "Texas" "Fight" cue cards that they have to hold up... Without those cards they would likely forget what follows "Texas".

Since just about every sporting venue does something like this, I doubt it would be a penalty.

I do think it would be neat if they showed the max decibel reading AFTER a major play. Picture us facing a critical 3rd down with the fans going nuts and making all sorts of noise... Then we hold them and force them to punt. The jumbotron could then flash what the decibel level reached with some sort of congratulations to the "12th Man"!

But don't use it to prompt the fans to get loud...

I would find them hard-pressed to penalize anyone for using their voices (artificial noise makers like cowbells, the band, etc, sure), but a coordinated effort to make the place loud? Again, I think the NCAA has gone away from that rule actually being enforcable.

I'm not saying for it to tell us to get loud. It would be more of a reference type thing. When people look up there and know that we aren't as loud as some plays before they will step it up, and after a huge play they will see how loud they got and get louder and louder each time. The only thing that should be displayed is the volume not any corny "get loud" crap.

Heaven forebid that we encourage people to be loud. Showing something like that would encourage so many people, when your there you know its loud, but actually seeing how loud you are would make that place totally nuts, well crazier than it already gets.

The day that we have to encourage our fans to be loud and enthusiastic about the game, I will be ashamed. Aggies shouldn't need someone watching over their shoulders to make sure they are loud. Aggies should be loud on their own.

It looks pathetic for the Athletic department to make an effort to get the fans excited. We shouldn't need any extra motivation to yell for the team.

This reminds me of the "Noise Meter" that hung from the rafters at NC State's basketball arena for decades. It had a row of vertical lights on it that lit up as the crowd got louder. A red light at the top lit up as the crowd went into a frenzy.

It was not until the basketball team moved into RBC Center in 1999 that it was revealed that the meter was a fake. It was merely a row of lights operated by a guy on the sidelines. It sure worked though. Some of the most ear splittingly loud crowds I ever heard came from that 12,400 seat gym.

Kinda on the fence about putting a decibel meter at Kyle for some reason.

Right and while we're at it... let's get those stupid Yell Leader guys off of the sidelines. Clearly, another pathetic attempt by the athletic department to motivate the students... Aggies are better fans than to need stuff like that.

Do something similiar that the NC State deal but use the ribbon boards as the scales. There could be a scale on it that goes from green, to yellow, to red when the 12th man goes nuts.

or not

When did the Yell Leaders join the athletic department?

Yell Leaders are elected by the students, and have the job of helping to coordinate the timing of yells by being a focal point. I don't think they are particularly motivating. Most people I sit with would make noise when we're on Defense regardless of whether the yell leaders were asking for it.

Coordinated yells are something they're good at, but the noise that really helps is the constant noise that stops the other team from communicating.

Note: If you install this meter, you might not like what it tells you about the crowd now-a-days.

And I doubt if anyone will ever beat the Guiness World Record:

Guinness(R) World Records, the Denver Broncos, and their fans all teamed up on Sunday, October 1 to break the record for the world's "loudest roar." The crowd of over 76,000 rose to the occasion and rang up a reading of 128.7 decibels, breaking the previous record of 125.4 decibels set at a soccer game in Dublin, Ireland last year.

And yes, when we played OU the year mentioned above, it was pretty loud (I've been to Kyle when it was louder, but not by much) and EVERYBODY knew about the meter, and all we could muster was 112.

It's not all the fault of the fans. Kyle doesn't really hold/channel sound in like some stadiums do.

I just started using this texags forum thing, I'm a senior and I am just trying to think of cool things that could happen to get the stadium louder. If you were at the game where they had the decibel meter you would think it was a good idea too. The short time I've been on these forums, there sure are a lot of Aggies that bash on other Aggies. That's not the Aggie thing to do so some of yall need to check your roots a little bit. Gig 'Em and God Bless.

We did it for OU 2000 when they came
in ranked #1. GameDay was there. We
only got up to 118 or something like that.

It was cool

I was there for that game. It was ridiculously loud!

This has been discussed several times and needs to happen.

It must be legitimate and contain at least a number readout. The microphone could be a wireless device mounted on the north goalpost and the number displayed for the whole game either on one of the two small scoreboards on each side of the stadium or on the gigatron, much like the pitch velocity meter at major league ball parks like Minute Maid park.

For everyone's reference, in volume of sound, every 3 decibels approximately equals a DOUBLING of volume of the sound.

While those guys may have set the world record, the stadium focused the energy in one place and they specifically were trying for the record. Enclose both endzones and have everyone shout towards the enter of the 50 yard line (even the ol' army folks) and I bet we can break that record!

Yeah that was an awesome game.
The only other time that Kyle Field was louder was i think in 2005 vs. ranked Kansas State. We made KS offense take 2 consecutive time-outs because their QB couldn't hear the play. It was so freakin' loud, it felt like an earthquake.

Do this, and get a dome, and we'll have the loudest football venue.

And if the Former Student side liked to yell a little more, it couldn't hurt. I'm sure lots of folks there feel like they've done enough yelling as students, but we need every voice we can get.

And the people in the boxes should have windows to yell out of, so they can participate too.

I'm sorry, but Kyle was much louder in the 80's when the Wrecking Crew destroyed opponents with Jackie Sherrill at the helm. '85 Texas is generally regarded as the loudest in history. But it's debatable.

I'm with Doc Jones on this. Use the ribbon boards and have them change colors as the decible level increases. I bet this will fire up even some of the social attendees at these games to yell a little louder and if the fans ever start stamping and hollering at the same time, the sound level may go off of the charts!!

Last year there was a lot of yelling and stomping during the Tech game. I wouldn't be surprise to see it happen again if we're having a good season, playing a tough opponent, and the score is close. Especially near the end of the game.
Nagler

The decibel meter would work to fire up the social folks. The majority of people already yell, but that would add more people when they actually see how loud all the yelling is. The people that already yell are just going to yell louder and it might add some voices that weren't yelling before.

I thank everyone who agrees with this and I would like for there to be talk about it so we might be able to make an impact and maybe get it put in. Its something I have been thinking about ever since they did it that one time. It will make a huge difference I know it will but it will also be classy and not annoying. It should just have the level in decibels for sure and maybe the color changing ribbon boards but that might even be pushing it. Thanks guys
