As an Allen alum, this news is perfectly timed.

Good fit.

Local coach goes to local university, will definitely help recruiting locally.

But, it will be Baptism by fire, that's for sure.

first its Southlake..not south lake or SouthLake...second we dont recruit...if u could name ONE just ONE four star recuit that came out of SLC in the last 4 years then please do...chase daniel was a 3 star by the way so its not him....luna didnt even go to play football, he now plays SS at Rice.....so can everyone just realize we dont recruit...and maybe we just are coached well and want to win....everyone seems to make excuses why we win because theres no possible way that an upper class highschool that is 98% white can compete in 5A....but yes Dodge leaving is gonna hurt

GREAT hire! If Fran left, I'd take him at A&M in a heartbeat.

North Texas will be off of every "big time" programs preseason wish list in one year. The days of OU, A&M and Texas clamoring to schedule them for a tune up game will soon be over.

I've watched his undersized guys dismantle teams with 10-12 D1 recruits on the roster.

He'll win and he'll win big, and in two years, whichever big time area program (t.u., OU, Arkansas, LSU, A&M or Tech) is looking for a HC will hire him away.

Congratulations Coach Dodge!

As a former player of Coach Dodge, I believe he will do great things no matter where he goes. He is a special person to play for.

Color me shocked.

This is a surprising move given the challenges at UNT.

If Dodge can win big there, he'll have his choice of plum D1-A gigs in a few years.

First, a good hire for UNT. Dodge brings instant publicity to a program that is lacking in that area. And a good move for him, because the HS to D1 direct hires have all been bumpy (ND's Gerry Faust and UNT's guy from Marshall HS), so he is lucky to be given the chance without having to go the asisstant route.

UNT needs something to get it going, but there is no reason they can't be a Marshall (the college) from a few years back or a Boise State. But they have a ways to go (and Dickey was not getting it done).

Lastly, Southlake has D1 talent. Not mega loaded talent, but they have a few athletes. While I believe SOuthlake capitilizes on its assets better than anyone, the notion that it is just a bunch of hard-working white kids is not the ENTIRE picture (not that race is really the issue here). They have superior facilities, superior gamefilm capabilities, superior assistants, the "stacked" senior high concept borrowed from Plano, and a tremendous "system" that is replicated at the feeder schools. I give SL credit, but lets not make this sound like they are all in an unairconditioned gym in the summer working out. I live nearby, and trust me, everyone is well taken care of.

By the way, is Hugh Charles from Keller or Southlake?

I think it's a good move. The money aside, he should be able to recruit well (especially locally) and win at UNT.

It obviously attracted him enough to leave before Riley's senior year, a year in which Carroll will also be loaded with starters back. I'm not sure there is much else for him to accomplish at the HS level.

Hugh Charles is from Keller.

I think he'll probably do well, though it will be tough.

Oh, and there is no other 77-1 guy. You can bank on that.

I think the fact that every single high school football player in Texas and most in Louisiana and oklahoma know who Dodge is - and deep down would have liked to play for him in high school - will significantly help initial recruiting.

I expect a pretty quick turn around to making UNT from a powder-puff to a pretty touch opponent.

My two cents re: the "recruiting" issue is that there is a huge difference between actually going out and contacting unsolicited "recruits" versus the self-recruiting that the Carroll program and the town of Southlake does on its own. Affluent city with great schools, athletics, and community support. I mean, can you really blame a DFW move-in or a player from another local program for wanting to play there on his own accord? Or for that matter, can you blame Carroll for at least talking to him and his family if shows interest first?

Nothing against Fentriss as the kid was a great player, but if Carroll were going out and soliciting recruits, there were plenty of more "talented" kids to go after. I don't know much about his situation so I really can't say much else.

I think there is something to the notion that Carroll isn't bringing in 4 and 5 star recruits though. I would be willing to bet that in most situations that could be considered "recruiting", it isn't Carroll showing the interest first. And in such case, I'm not sure how you can find them at fault.

UNT plays OU next year

I've heard this rumor don't believe it is true but Dodge will only stay at UNT for 2 years. This is just a stepping stone for him. He wants to coach at A&M once Fran leaves.

As a former football player in the Dallas area, I know there is/was some stuff going on under the radar. I knew guys from my team (and others) who've had people from southlake talk to them about playing for them.

I was talked to about transferring to southlake. Of course I have a lot of family there and the talks were centered around me playing there if we moved there. I went to several of their playoff games after we were knocked out my Jr year.

...also they were 3-A back then

The Ticket in Dallas was just talking about how this was a win/win for everyone involved. UNT because they will have a badazz coach, and Dodge because he will use this as a stepping stone into the Big XII. They said that if he could hold out at UNT for the next 5-6 years (never going to happen if he turns that program around), we would be looking at the next coach of the Aggies. Just thought that was interesting that they said us as opposed to any of the other schools in the Big XII. I could see a Baylor jump from there, but not necessarily to one of the biggest schools.
