So the symbol on Michigan's helmet is simply the old version helmet. I take it that most helmets looked like that back in the 1930's. How long have helmets had decals on them? I've seen pictures of the 1950's and they had decals, but I've not seen any before that.

anyone remember the topic that was about helmets and their histories? There was some website that contained all teh helmet histories for most colleges and pro teams.

I think it's rather futile to paint or make anything stick to leather. I think that would account for the lack of decals in the early years of football.

Dont know...good question.

There are pictures with number decals, but not logos, from the 40's and 50's.....but that's all I see.

I would love to see us retro for a t.u. game next year. The old 1977 uni's with the white helments.

I guess it would be so special becuase we rarely beat t.u. in those uni's. Ed Simmonini(sp) and the 2 stripes rocked.

But use the 1978 white helmet with the bigger T and float A and M.

I think that only Michael Goodson should be able to wear the lightning bolt.

Actually what happened is that a Coach from Princeton brought the wing design from Princeton to Michigan, where it got famous.

Its still worn by Princeton as well as Michigan, because Princeton is stubborn and wont give it up, because it was theirs first.

Herbert O. "Fritz" Crisler designed the helmet and it debuted at Princeton in 1935, he later got a job at Michigan in 1938 and took the design with him.

Interesting! I always thought growing up that it was from the coloration pattern on a Wolverines coat.

Oh...I believed you, I was just commenting on how I always tried to rationalize what their helmet was supposed to be as I was growing up.
