Jorvorskie Lane has the fastest 40 time. Now he is working on beating the record for fastest 40 time for a guy over 300 lbs...

Track and Field dose not run a 40-yard dash in competition so no one trains for it.

In football however, everyone tests for it. Lots of these guys work out specifically to get fast 40-times. Look at what Dat did at the combine in 1999. EVERYONE was shocked at his time. Well, he spent 2-months getting ready for it and specifically working on his starts to set a fast 40. I'll bet if you timed him 3-months later he'd have been no where close to that time he set.

If you asked a world class sprinter to train for 3-months to set the fastest 40 time he could, you'd get a legit 4.2 forty.

Last season I was watching a UTEP game and the annoucers said that one of the UTEP receivers ran a 4.18.

That's Johnnie Lee Higgins you're talking about, and although he is fast, I'd bet a million dollars (if I had it) that his actual 40 time was not 4.18.

Anyone remember former Colorado WR Rae Carruth? He was the one that went to jail for murder when he was playing with the Carolina Panthers. I remember talk of him running a 4.18 when he was in college.

On a side bar...I seem to remember reading on an old thread where Sampson Taylor ran a sub 4.3 in Jr. Olympics or something like that.

He also is a two-time winner of the NFL's "Fastest Man" competition and once ran back-to-back 40-yard dashes in a lightning-fast 4.09 seconds for the Dallas Cowboys.

I would think a lot of it depends on if the clock starts when the runner does, or if the runner has to start from a signal, which brings in reaction time. How does the NFL combine do it?

The Steelers a few years back had a cat named Stone i think that was dangerously close to a 4.1. I have seen 4.4 in person and cannot personally fathom 4.1.

fastest 40 times I have ever seen in person were back to back 4.28s run by Byron Hanspard after his first year at Tech.

All Va Tech times are known to be B.S. They're superfast until they get to the combine and then they're behind everyone else.

As for a 4.09 or anything lower than a 4.3, I'd like to have it timed electronically. Times are always going to vary, anyway, depending on the surface, wind conditions, and what athletes are allowed to wear.

Objective, where most people don't understand about Ben Johnson is that he moves on the gun whereas when you run a 40, electronic times go on your movement and on hand times, the coaches have to react to your reaction.

Meaning, Deduct about .20 of a second from the 40 time.

any hand time is +- .15, believe me, I have plenty of experience hand timing.

If you are looking to draft your players, your hand time will be in the - .1 or more guaranteed, and if you are going on reaction, subtract another .2

so, add .3 to the 4.2's quoted as records, and it starts getting close to the 4.5's olympic records stand with.

it does add up.

I saw a film of Rae Carruth, while he playing at CU, run a legit 4.1 INDOOR 40.

Of course, now Rae is in prison for life (I think) for conspiring to kill his girlfriend.

I played ball with a guy in College named Ariel Prince (FS) who was the fastest man I ever seen and he ran 4.2’s all day long, for what ever that is worth. Seems I also remember Hershel Walker beating Green in a head to head match up at one of those NFL fastest man games once.

Heard tale that the late Chicago Bear Walter Payton once ran the 40 upside down on his hands in about 20 seconds. What upper strength and balance!
How does that rate?

I believe you...thats freakin an awesome time. Was it unofficial due to high winds? was it indoors or outdoors? I love to watch track and field and seeing the fastest people in the world run the 100M. Where did this unofficial time take place?? Do you run track for school or what?

I do not run for a school. I run in a church league. We tour around the world to show people what we can accomplish. I do not have the most athleticly gifted looking body in the world, however, I am able to accomplish a feat which is just about impossible by most modern men. My legs are somewhat short, but I feel they are very fast because I am able to make my feet hit the ground at a higher rate. The 3.98 was slightly wind aided. My normal workout times range between 4.01-4.12 without the wind.

I know alot people will mock me and make fun, but I know the truth. Those who see me run know the truth.

MBooyazz,

Where is this church league going to run next/again? Could you post a time and place sometime and Ill try to make the trip. I live in Texas so it would have to be close. If your church does this for some sort of charity work Id be glad to donate to the cause. Keep running buddy....

Thanks

We will be having our next meet in Bakersfield, CA. Too bad that is too far for you Lynn. I will not be featured in that meet though, as I am nursing a pulled hammy. I should be running at the meet on 6/17 which is being held in Bedford, TX. I will let you know all the details before then. I will be featured in the 100 meters where I am trying to bust 10 seconds for the first time. My speed and quickness is really prevelant in the first 50 mtrs as I do begin to get caught in the last 50. I tend to think that my short legs lend to the fact that I have been unable to bust 10 seconds.

At the NFL combine the 40 is timed electronically but the clock starts at the players first movement. They break through a string at the end of the 40 to stop the clock.

It seems pretty logical that if they timed sprinters this way that their times would be much faster than their times where they are started with a pistol.

Everyone knows that Jose Canseco ran a 3.8 40! He said it and I believe it.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Master Aggie, there is no way that Jose ran a 3.8. I have raced Jose on a couple of occassions in which i ran between 4.05-4.23. Canseco was a good 3 steps behind at about more of a 4.47-4.52 range. My 3.95 was legit. If you dont believe me, then I invite you to come to one of my showings.

I noticed that Curtis Dickey was #15 on that list. Imagine having to tackle a man that big, strong and fast. He should have had a better pro career, but there were some character issues from what I recall.

You cannot just take a 40 split time out of someones 100 because the way you run a 100 and a 40 is totally different. For a 40, you get to top speed as quick as possible and maintain it to the end. With a 100, there is an acceleration, maintain, and deceleration phase. Ideally, you want to maximize acceleration and maintain top speed while minimizing the deceleration phase. Top sprinters know each of these phases and thats how they improve and why the gains of top sprinters are measure in tenths to hundredths of a second.

Basically, an NFL 40 and an olympic 100 are completely different is my point.
