Election Results came out tonight, and we will be having a non-reg yell leader. Thoughts? View the results at http://vote.tamu.edu. The third guy, Chris "Buck" Buckner, is the non-reg. I thought I wouldn't ever see it in my time here at A&M.

From post WWII thru about 1972, we had a Civilian Yell Leader, elected solely by the non-regs.

This was in the days when the Corps was 6000 and non-regs about 1500.

Veterans returning from WWII started this because they did not feel like being in the Corps after participating in real actual battles, and they wanted their own Yell Leader.

Once the non-regs started outnumbering the Corps there was no need for a Civilian Yell Leader. I am constantly amazed that the Corps, being outnumbered 20 to 1, still manages to get all Corps Yell Leaders almost all the time. The Corps sticks together.

Since 1972 there have been several Yell Leaders who were non-regs, but not many. The last one was Boo Boo Davies, about 4 years ago.

I am waiting on a woman to be elected. It will happen and I will have no objection to it, as long as she is elected by the students.

Can anyone tell me why there are on 12990 "eligible" voters for student body pres, and the Sr and Jr Yell Leaders?

Buck is an awesome guy and deserves it!I am proud of him. Had a great time workin on the campaign.

All the other people who ran were awesome and deserved it just as much. When it comes down to it, WE ARE ALL AGGIES. And thats what makes this school so damn awesome.

I agree with you Benson, it will happen and if nothing else, it will hopefully show many of the stick-up-the-butt traditionalists that it isn't the end of all things aggie

You are too young to have that kind of attitude.

Change will happen. Sometime around 2040 A&M will have cheerleaders, if the world still exists. You will be in your sixties at that time and it will not make any difference to you.

Also, I know women who can do more pushups AND pullups than you can. And they are not on steroids. And they are not huge Russian shotputters.

Ron Plackmeyer was elected yell leader in 74. He was a non reg. The corps always put together a block of 5 candidates and voted that block, while the non-regs never voted as a block. Ron was from Davis Gary, back when it was a guys dorm. We managed to get him elected by appealing to the corps to help elect just one no-reg and we would vote to keep the other 4 corps.

Wow, 08. Those are some fairly ignorant generalizations you make about women. I wonder if you can do pushups.

By the way, you're out of your mind if you didn't enjoy our dance team. I went to all the games in the Big XII tourney here in Dallas and I think they were the best dance team out there; my horn friend I went to thought so as well. By the way, if you just now noticed (in the NCAA tourney) we had a dance team then you're the last Aggie who should have any say in whether we have women yell leaders, cheerleaders, etc.

Buck is pretty red-ass. That 24 hr yell in the pounding rain won me over. I don't get to vote anymore, but if I did, I would've voted for him.

Gary Mauro was the class of 70's gift of a non-reg Yell Leader. He wound up in State politics, finally running (and losing) in a race against GWB for governor a few years back. As I recall, his wearing a white suit was no big deal. Last time I checked, an Aggie is an Aggie.

there have been several non reg yell leaders (man?)in the past. back in the early 60's there was a non reg yell leader position that only a non reg could run for. its nothing new!

Um im in the corps and i can tell u girls suck at push ups as a general statement. For them to pass the pt test they have to do 12.

I am not in the corps, but I can tell you that a bunch of corps guys are overweight or otherwise look out of shape, in general. Hell, they had to add weight standards and such it was getting so bad.

The push up thing before yell practice is kind of pointless anyhow -- give me someone who can do 12 and let's get on with it. I don't go there to watch some dudes do pushups. That, to me, is not what a yell leader embodies.

The guy is pretty redass, and a generally good person. He was in my dorm fish year. Also, he did that freakin 24 hr. yell practice in the rain, so nobody has to worry about him lacking dedication or heart. So I say good for him.

when I was there we had, and I'm sure I will be corrected, the first black non-reg elected. I forget his name. I do know that he was ragged on pretty hard at first.

What I heard from some students who were at the announcement of results really disturbs me. While I understand that the corps has dominated the yell leader elections every year, I don't understand why this year's election of a non-reg was met with such vile and hateful remarks. Buck is an Aggie, not a t-sip!

There were comments like "wait 'til we get him on the field, then we'll teach him." These types of comments were thrown around loudly and with frequency. Why? That is absolutely ridiculous!

I have no problem with whoever is ELECTED, be it corps or non-reg. I think the corps needs to come back down to earth a little and realize that, if the student body ever banded together, there might be an all non-reg group year in and year out. And, I highly doubt they would throw a childish fit if a corps member was occasionally elected (or elected every year).

Hateful and immature reactions like what took place last night will only make that day come sooner. If this attitude and behavior continue, I wouldn't mind seeing it happen. I have no doubt that a non-reg could do as good a job as MANY of the recent yell-leaders I've watch muddle their way through the job during the past 16 years.

As an earlier poster said, an Aggie is an Aggie. The only way we should differentiate is between 2%ers and the rest. The corps is a great tradition and one of the things I love most about Texas A&M, but it is behavior like what happened last night that will keep the corps from ever being what it once was.

Sad. Just sad.
