What I heard from some students who were at the announcement of results really disturbs me. While I understand that the corps has dominated the yell leader elections every year, I don't understand why this year's election of a non-reg was met with such vile and hateful remarks. Buck is an Aggie, not a t-sip!
There were comments like "wait 'til we get him on the field, then we'll teach him." These types of comments were thrown around loudly and with frequency. Why? That is absolutely ridiculous!
I have no problem with whoever is ELECTED, be it corps or non-reg. I think the corps needs to come back down to earth a little and realize that, if the student body ever banded together, there might be an all non-reg group year in and year out. And, I highly doubt they would throw a childish fit if a corps member was occasionally elected (or elected every year).
Hateful and immature reactions like what took place last night will only make that day come sooner. If this attitude and behavior continue, I wouldn't mind seeing it happen. I have no doubt that a non-reg could do as good a job as MANY of the recent yell-leaders I've watch muddle their way through the job during the past 16 years.
As an earlier poster said, an Aggie is an Aggie. The only way we should differentiate is between 2%ers and the rest. The corps is a great tradition and one of the things I love most about Texas A&M, but it is behavior like what happened last night that will keep the corps from ever being what it once was.
Sad. Just sad.
