His name came up at lunch, and no one knew exactly what A&M did wrong during that time. I believe the football team was penalized for "lack of institutional control", and Kevin Murray and/or boosters were involved.
I believe when Jackie left, they could not prove he broke any rules, but he left under pressure.
That was a disappointing football season - 1988. Highly ranked going in, I think rumours started before the season, and we lost the opening Kickoff Classic in NJ to Nebraska - Sherrill stepped down before the "Hurricane Bowl" against Alabama and we finished the season 7-5.

One player, George Smith, claimed Sherrill had FedEx'd him some money and had the FedEx envelope to prove it. He late recanted his story.

The Kevin Murray deal goes back to a press conference when he was asked where he go the money for his BMW. He mumbled through the answer causing the press to speculate we had paid him. The reality was that Murray got the money from his pro baseball contract.

Jackie was pressured out, but some of it was his own doing. He was often flippant and uncooperative with the NCAA. One of the NCAA's biggest problems withour program was the the AD and the football coach were the same person, leaving no system for accountability. While that may have been fine 50 years ago, the NCAA didn't like it in the 1980's. Hence the "Lack of institutional control" claim. When all was said and done, the NCAA never found Jackie accountable for any of it. However, the damage was done.

While Sherrill did a lot to build the A&M program, he also had some tendencies that caused some frustration. Our frequent inability to win the opener almost every season was one of them. The fact that we were LSU's b*tch during that period was another. In fact, Jackie continued to have trouble with LSU when he coached at MSU.

I miss Jackie, but that chapter was over a long time ago.

The only "rule" he broke was beating the DMN beloved tu team consistantly.

Wasn't it the Dallas Times (Crimes) Herald that kept pursuing A&M's possible misconduct?

Yeah...they were hot about the SMU death penalty and felt Jackie had offered too much info on it...

It was also the ambush by Gerry Oher of Channel 8 in Dallas of Kevin Murray in the Cain Hall parking lot that set Jackie off.

Jackie broke 2 major rules: He beat the sips & he was too arrogant for the writers.

Sherrill coached the game against Alabama.

This is absolutely correct, but the main reason was the first one.

The reason Jackie was accused of "cheating", was because he had beaten Texas too many times and had surpassed them. That cannot be allowed to happen in this state, so hence, Jackie had to hit the road.

I do not jest. There is more to this statement than meets the eye.

Jackie did not get along with any of the sports media. Jackie also upset the smu/tu bandwagon. Nobody in the state wanted the Aggies to win.

Negative recruiting by all SWC schools was no help either.

It was a 300ZX, not a BMW that Kevin Murray drove. Copies of his car payments showed that a booster was paying for the car. That and some other violations (some of which were administrative - Sherill was AD in addition to coach) put A&M on probation for the '88 season. When George Smith made it public that Sherill was paying him "hush money", Sherrill had to resign.

You could've stopped right there. The guy had a 'tude, but was exactly what the DR ordered at the time.

Jackie could've been a saint and he would've been shown the door. Lots of collateral damage when something that big hits the fan.

"cheating" = NCAA violations that included improper employment and financial aid, extra benefits to student-athletes, improper recruiting and lack of institutional control.

of which Jackie was NEVER found guilty of.

Vandiver(SP)who was the president and a great one at that, loved Jackie. He resigned and Mobley the incoming President was not a sports person at all. He was the "Princeton of the South" mouth. He forced Sherrill to resign. He also did numerous other things that all turned out to be bad for the University, which is why he was asked to leave as well.

Mobley is the only reason Sherrill left. As stated all counts of Smith were blown away and Sherrill was never found guilty of anything.

If you want to talk minor league baseball contracts, take a look at the number that t.u. has had. I would not go there sips.

Several references to SMU. SMU had nothing to do with it.

Picadillo hit the nail on the head, plain and simple.

O. J. was not found guilty of murder either. Where there is that much smoke there is probably some fire. Remember, Joe Pa called Jackie out when he was at Pitt.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
brascolaw,

why don't you go **** yourself...

Jackie was NEVER found guilty of this and the NCAA even issued a release absolving him from any wrondoing.

If he was guilty, he would've had some penalties. The fact was that our Administration didn't back him.

name me any school at that period in the SWC that was not on probation. well maybe rice.

"Neither O. J. nor Jackie were found guilty." That made me LOL. That is some serious smack.

Being a Texas graduate, I was pissed about yall owning of us and your Carter pipeline. I know this will mean nothing to most on here, but coaching friends of mine who had no stake in this (meaning they didn't like UT or A&M) said back then that the only reason A&M didn't get the death penalty was because the NCAA realized what it did to SMU and they will never give the death penalty again.

what a 'sip!

True to form, there is absolutetly not one shred of ANYTHING tying Jackie to any violations, yet 'sips continue to cry in their beer and lodge smoky allegations of nothingness.

They will never understand it, and with time they will probably try to deny it- like the Holocaust.

Yep on the DMN bias against Jacksola... they especially didn't like when he was first hired he was the highest paid state employee.

Media and non-Aggie fans liked to make jokes about A&M not being a perpetual SWC power... then when A&M decided to do something about it, said non-Aggie fans weren't laughing anymore and put a target on everything Aggie football.

Let them eat cake.

Your response makes no sense regarding Analogy Ag's response.

Because the Carter Pipeline was in what era? Go ahead, you know... Begins with Jackie and ends with Sherrill. So, you did imply JS didn't you?

Texas_Fan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Cow Hop, you imply that I impled that JS was guilty. I did not. I remember it being A&M boosters who gave the money to get the top players in the state. Again, I never said that Jackie was guilty. Boosters are always the hardest to control and especially during that time period.

Maybe if you remove the maroon glasses you can understand my post.
