Im at A&M right now and do not know the exact explanation. All of my life, my dad and uncle have referred to the longhorns as the sips. The origin is from tea sips which is an expression used to describe those from the school in Austin. I dont know where the name started or how, but if you can imagine a weakling sipping on his tea in Austin while the ranchers were in College Station drinking coffee or another mans drink...

shortened from the original "teasipper":

With their hand symbol, the thumb and hand are holding a cup of tea, with the pinky up in the air.

As previously stated, Austin elitests sipping hot tea compared to Aggies working, fighting in the wars, acomplishing something more productive . . .

The teasips served tea on independence day at an annual meeting of the texas ex's.

Exactly as Bassetag said. It is a demeaning reference to the past when Texas was a school for those with money doing nothing productive (and sipping tea) while others were getting their hands dirty.

Texas also got the upper hand over A&M due to an uneven amount of funding given by the state legislature, due to having some people affiliated with Texas in positions of influence. Therefore, Texas was for the spoiled brats who spent their days sipping tea.

The hand sign at tea u. didn't come into use until the 1950s.
The term "teasipper" long predates it.

They come from Austin, just off 35 south of 290.

While the Ags were fighting wars the t.u. students/exes sat around sipping tea.

though you don't hear the term "yellow bellies" very much any more, this used to be a term many Ags regularly called the sips.

It came from a year that t.u.'s uniforms had faded to yellow on the front of the jerseys.

Its blue collar vs white collar

As several have said, it refers to the richer, aristocratic, "hoity-toity" stereotype of students at Texas as opposed to the hard-working, middle class, "salt of the earth" stereotype of students at A&M.

I have also heard in the past a story along the lines of:

"It refers to a time [WWI, WWII] when the entire student body at A&M went to war while the students at Texas stayed home and 'sipped thier tea'."

I've been told that this is not the origin of the term and was created through years of
"smack talk", for lack of a better term. There are plenty of students from Texas that went and fought during those wars and to imply otherwise is silly and a little offensive, IMHO. The only truth in this version that I could see as being accurate is that a much higher percentage of A&M students went to war, since we were an all-military school at the time.

In other words, pretty weak smack in today's context.

Right on about blue collar vs white collar.

Back in those days, students went to UT to become doctors and lawyers and such ( ).
You went to atm if you wanted to be a farmer.
For some reason or another, the aggies thought sophistication was humerous and warranted taunting.

Of course, its the same both ways. The whole, 'blue collar vs white collar' is also where the saying, "pooooor aggie" comes from.

That's absurd. Every able-bodied 18-30 year old male fought in WWII. And, it was won by the regular people (who weren't college grads at that time). Only a rich kid went to college during the Depression, so it's not like our student body was exactly made up of poor people.

It comes from WWII. As the jodie goes . . .

" Back in 1944, Texas Aggies went to war. Teasips fought with women and wine. 1000 miles behind the lines."

"Don't you know at A&M, the girls are girls and the guys are men. Don't you know at old t.u. The girls are girls and the guys are too. Teasip, Teasip, don't feel blue. Tinkerbell is a fairy too."

Yes. It is impossible to know any history about something unless you are actually a part of it. Idiot.

I never fought in WWII, but I know quite a bit about it.

sips cringed in fear while the AGs got the job done. As always the sips just talked the talk and hoped everyone would be brainwwashed into believing their self hype.

The good thing though was alot of w h o r e houses back then had tu students working in them to help the best and only way they could. Just like at the beginning of the Junction Boys movie.
