Pretty sure you're right. I don't think they settled on a mascot until late in the first decade of the 20th cent.

I also saw an old Aggie year book just last year with "Longhorn" on the front cover in a dark orange

Was shocked to learn this

My cousin was the family's first Ag; believe his first year was on or about 1936. When I visited his home the first thing I did was locate his copies of the Longhorn and "pour" thru them.

This is a true statement.
I believe the Aggie yearbook dropped the "longhorn" name in '48 or '49

You rock, Spreadsheet. Looking forward to seeing those. Great find, and "Here" for the recently departed father of your friend.

Damn, Fleen. Thanks. Not used to posting on old, bumped threads. Had no idea. Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna leave the sentiment. Never hurts to fondly remember those who've gone before us.

My office has yearbooks from 1903-present. One in the 1920s is missing. Wishful thinking to get our hands on an Olio.
The history in the early 1900s is interesting.

I like the Corps. I'm good with regs. The only regs I don't like, in fact, are regs who don't like non-regs.

Where can I find a dictionary of all the slang words and the language which we spoke on campus in 1970? We could converse with only ourselves understanding the meaning. I have a few Longhorns starting in 1919. Shows hot sweethearts, cool cars, trains and an Areoplane photo. Leggett Hall is the same since 1911.

In what year did they switch from being what I presume was the "Texas Varsity" to the "Texas Longhorns?" And did they have the cow mascot before they became the Longhorns? Like, while they were still the Varsity? God, they're weird.

EDIT: ps. Have I ever told you guys how much I hate the sips?

A&M's original colors were red and white. Prior to the 1929 season the football jerseys arrrived in maroon, a mistake by the maker. It was decided that maroon was a more distinctive color since so many other schools also used red that the decision was made to keep maroon and white permanently.

Now all of you guys know.

Bumping this old thread because no one ever answered Billkemp's question:

The first A&M Long Horn yearbook was in 1903.
That school in Austin has been the Longhorns since 1904.
They first had an actual living Longhorn mascot in 1916 (the same animal we branded in 1917).
Our yearbook was the Long Horn/Longhorn through 1948. It changed to the Aggieland in 1949.

I have an 1895 Olio in my office at the Alumni Center. It's amazing to look through. Drop by if you ever want to see it.

Also, all the yearbooks are now accessible online at http://library.tamu.edu/yearbooks/.

Grandfather, Class of '41!

Lost him last football season... Would love to have a copy of his page in the book! Would pay for it!

So...There was a photo taken in the mid to late 80's. It was a battalion staff photo.

The photo was set up to take through the legs of a lady with stilettos, fishnets stockings and a whip, with the further view of the staff members looking up at her as if she was about to beat their a****.
You could only see the lady's legs and S&M paraphernalia.

I have been trying to find that pic for 20 years. I tell folks about it but they just smile like i must have had a dream about it...

Can anyone tell me what year that was?

+1 to what Scot Walker was saying about all the yearbooks online

I guess I was sick the week they took the yearbook photos when I was a junior so I am not in the 1992 Aggieland

But now you can go back and look

The more recent yearbooks are suppressed to encourage current students to buy yearbooks

But when you graduated before most of the current students were born it is presumed all the yearbooks that would have been purchased have been purchased

http://library.tamu.edu/yearbooks/

Amazing resource

Love it

What year did they stop calling themselves Texas University? Many old football programs list them as such.
