How long do you want to ignore this user?
So I am helping my friend pack her stuff, because she's moving apartments this weekend, and I come accross some older Encyclopedia looking books. I look at the binding and they are the 1939 - 1943 Longhorns with all the articles and etc in them. So in the 1940 Longhorn theyve got a synopsis of all the games and opponents and the detailed game-by-game of the Sugar Bowl...

SWEET!!!

Sadly, she got these from her recently deceased Grandfather '42...

These are definately special but I am going to start copying them and scanning them...

What a find!

the titanic sunk in 1912...yes it was called the longhorn

i can't help it if you dont know your aggie history...i dont even consider myself that astute of an ag history buff but i do know a lot about a&m

i'm not in the corps and have never had a desire to be

i have the 1922 longhorn, it is the year e. king gill started the 12th man tradition...funny how it has no mention of that event although it does talk about that game!!!

The Aggieland was called 'The Longhorn' up until about he mid 1940s. The first Aggieland (1890ish) was called 'The Olio.' The before mentioned Longhorns are worth about $100+ in good condition. Those who were unaware of this should have their Ag Tags removed.

Haha, I was just trying to avoid the confusion to non-ags... but yes from 1902 - 1950's the Aggieland was actually the Longhorn...

And Bevo's original name was Varsity...

Anyhoo, these are a great fin because of the war material and the football material and their historical / intrinsic value. I can't wait to read about the '38-'42 football teams...

Yes the yearbook was the longhorn, but I have heard on more than one occasion that the book was called the longhorn before the University of Texas gave themselves that nickname. I'm not certain on this, but it could be true.

While we are on this subject...if anybody happens to have a copy of the 1895 Olio, I would be love to buy it from you.

It is the only Aggie yearbook I lack. I have every other yearbook, starting with the 1903 Longhorn, right up to the 2004 Aggieland.

I paid $2 for a '33 Longhorn at a flea market. The person selling it didn't know it was an A&M yearbook. A definate keep sake.

Olio. This is a very neat link. Was this a yearbook of sorts prior to the Longhorn?

Texag77,

You don't have any duplicate '45 & '46 do you? That's all I need to get me from 1920-1963 (my AMC cutoff), solid. I've got some scattered ones between '10-'20 and I have an Olio but I don't think I'll soon have the jack it will take to fill in those older years. Anyway, the '45 & '46 seem to be pretty hard to come by for me anyway. Thnks.

Oh and for everyone else's campusology info...

Hey OldArmy71

My dad was class of '42. Maybe they knew each other. My dad is George Ogdee and was in A-Battery - Field Artilery. Had two cousins that were class of '68 and '70 - possibly you may know them Jack Ogdee and Ron Ogdee. Just thought I would ask.

The yearbook was called the longhorn long before that other school was calling themselves the longhorns

Pole -

There was no A&M yearbook for 1945 (paper shortage towards the end of the war).

They did print 2 editions for the 1945-1946 school year. The first had a cream colored cover. I've only seen this edition available a few times. The next 1946 volumn actually was titled "Edition 2" and had a blue cover. It is fairly easy to find and pops up on eBay periodically. I've had several copies of this one, but have traded or sold all except the one copy that is in my collection.

anyone who doesn't know that a) the annual used to be called The Longhorn, and/or b) our colors were not originally maroon and white....

should have their Ag Tag removed and they should have to go to an Ol' Army boot camp style fish camp.

Geo--My father was in Battery B Coast Artillery. The whole class joined the service with about a year to go to graduation (Spring '43). He returned to A&M in '46 and finished the next year in petroleum engr. I'd love to ask him about your father, but he died Dec. 7 2003.

I'm also sorry to report that I don't remember your cousins. I was class of '71 in G-1, so I was there when they were, but I was a shy sort in those days. But thank you for asking.

I'd heard that there was a 2 volume year but now I know the story, I'll be on the lookout.
Thanks again.

b) our colors were not originally maroon and white....

Are you referring to the legend that we were supposed to be red and white but they messed up the order and sent us maroon? I've heard that before but don't know if I really believe it.

I have a copy of the 1926 Longhorn. The Ags went 7-1-1 in football, and won the SWC title under D.X. Bible. They beat Trinity 20-10, Southwestern 23-6, SMU 7-0, Sam Houston State 77-0, Baylor 13-0, Rice 17-0, and Texas 28-0. They tied Sewanee 6-6, and lost to TCU, 3-0. There's a lot of other great reading in the yearbook, and the photography is striking, considering it was almost 80 years ago.

I love the "Red headed club" in the Olio.

"Red, Red, Red are we
Red headed men of AMC!"

Constitution: First and only article: Must be red head.

Cracks me up!

From the 1926 Longhorn Senior Class History written in the "prose" of that era:

"And lo! when we had come safely through this year, we looked back and saw two championships in the sport called basket ball and the other in that called cross country. And so also did we see the Aggie hordes triumph over the band of Steers, in the land of the Capital City. And in this battle, we saw the mighty Steer smitten low and he was given over into our hands."
OldArmy71
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think the "prose of that era" is in fact an attempt to sound "biblical."

Sounds like you should read it like on of the Southeastern (arkansas - florida) Baptist preachers...

You know when they say Lord it comes out like LLLLorDUH! (Eric Cartman style)

I like that prose though...

ok, some of you really know Aggie lore, so couple of questions:

1. when, or did tu steal 'Longhorn' handle?
2. why did we give it up?
