People don't make stupid comments in the heat of the moment if they don't care and aren't passionate about what they do.

They just become apathetic and show up and get a paycheck. They shrug off negative comments with a smile.

As much as I can't defend Elko recently I can say this. I actually believe he's trying his best and that he's committed.

He's definitely made some huge mistakes. But gentleman we knew we were hiring an inexperienced head coach that had only a year or two at Duke. We signed up for the learning curve.

I will say the biggest question is what does he do next?

He won't do anything different. He will keep trotting Marcel out there for the rest of the season.

Elko is still a smart guy and will figure out that the OC and DC were dumb hires.
Hire better people around you and you will succeed.

To an extent you're not wrong.

The biggest test of any leader is not the avoidance of mistakes but how they respond to and over come them. Ultimately it's about the lessons they learn and and take away from those mistakes.

Maybe he needs to go watch the Saban documentary and see how Saban handled the Tua situation when he made the change ahead of the NCG.

I meant after the season is over. He can't clean house and make new hires now. So he's keeping QBs not named Marcel healthy by not putting them behind a line that will get them injured.

If we get new a new OC he needs to have a healthy QB room to come here. Or he won't come.

I think he knows he screwed up. And he's going to fix it in the off season. This season is over.

We could have Tom Brady back there, won't matter if Owen's is going to continue to just wave at free runners up the A gap

Exactly. Putting a new QB in just decimates your QB room. It doesn't make you win.

To his credit he did start Edwards at rb this week. Him trotting Marcel back out again shows the lack of faith in the backup qbs more than anything. The qb coach better have his resume updated.

You're right. We should just continue to get our asses handed to us. That won't have any decimating effects.

Personally I think his passion for continuity is a huge fault. I understand how important that is to gain loyalty in life and business. People want to work in an organization where they can be promoted and where an organization doesn't always look outside to hire key positions. But you cannot do it to a fault. Sometimes that's necessary.

Elko sticking with Reed and the in house promotions of the 2 most critical assistant coaching positions on the team now appears to have culminated in the perfect storm. Maybe it's just 1 of the 3? Maybe 2? But when nothing is changing and we see the same thing repeated every week, we may never know where the problem lies.

I want to share the optimism but we're in year 3. If it were years 1 or two, I would understand. But year three and we're regressing? And the decisions he made in OC, DC, QB coach and portal evaluators were within the year. What makes us think he's capable of making good decisions? This is a business and experiment time is past. It's like a trainee out of a training program put in the most visible part of your company for three years and he still can't function or make decisions. What do you do? You certainly don't leave him in that role.

He made OC and DC decisions last year. I don't know if you've hired anyone recently. But it's a crap shoot.

Y'all aren't listening. Elko isn't protecting the backups from anything, Marcel is the best QB on campus right now. I know that is difficult to believe but that is the situation.

Further I want to point out that we likely could be with Stoops right now if it weren't for our culture and passion. We were so certain he was the guy three years ago. We spurned a coach with more experience who likely wouldn't have made these coordinator decisions.

But we believed that even if it took five years it would still be worth it. Because he was smart and was the kind of captain we needed long term.

Now when he doesn't win 11 games and has a down year we are ready let him go.

He had us in the playoffs last year gentleman. Last year.

How about we put down the crack pipes and realize that A&M is not Bama. That he's got a lot of working to do.

Support the team. And try to keep just a tiny fraction of perspective.

So we get to bring in a Tua caliber qb mid season via portal? We don't have anything close to ready on our roster is what we keep hearing from the supposed insiders.

Yes I have, many times. And yes, a crapshoot but you notice your winners and losers right away. You see the decisions they make. And you have to make hard decisions on what's best for the overall situation. Everything rides on that. The only thing I didn't do was give guaranteed contracts to people. They had to earn it.

So the best QB on campus is consistently throwing uncatchable balls on about 40% of his attempts? And that includes balls thrown under 10 yards?

I don't believe you. Because what that means is we have 3 QBs that we KNOW aren't at a level expected of a freshman who just arrived on campus.

And if that is true, it's the most damning indictment of this coaching staff that I've seen so far.

He may have tried for all we know. All our candidates probably heard Reed was staying as the starter and they said Thanks but no thanks. Wiggins decided to step up and take one for the team.

A smart guy wouldn't have made those hires.
A LOT of us idiots here in the cesspool could see this coming a mile away and posted our concerns when those hires were made.

His comments were the equivalent of a temper tantrum. Elko's problem is not a message board, the big money people play by a different set of rules. They pay for performance. Being intelligent and being effective are not the same thing.

Was it intelligent to enter into a contract with an OC who was allowed to leave after two years and permitted to work for another team at the end of the season?

Was it intelligent to either not have a capable back-up QB or deny you do?

I don't think it was smart or even kind, to not take Marcel out even for a set of downs, and let him gather his composure.

I am not sold on the smartest guy in the room.

It is possible the DC hire may pan out, we will find out as the season goes on. Elko stated in his press conference that he'd turned over defensive play calling a few weeks ago; the time period in which we have shown defensive improvement. Maybe he was in Hemphill's way.

Going after the fanbase shows he is lost and has no clue how to fix this team this season. I'm glad he is passionate but that doesn't translate into wins.

A lot of coaches are hard-headed, whether they're smart or not. Pay them a ton of money and that just reinforces their belief in self to the nth degree. So our coach has been pretty much par for the course in decision making hardheadedness and self-belief…hire from within, stick with players that he's heavily invested in, and disregard the noise outside because he knows best. Changing that gameplan won't come easily after so much reinforcement.

Been waiting for Owens since he got on campus. He's better this year, not tackling himself as much. But IMO Edwards, Baker, Morrow are all better than him running the ball.
