Any coach at A&M who has a season worse than 8-5 should be fired

Obviously everyone wants a coach who will compete for a national championship. That's the goal. Some coaches are more likeable than others. Some coaches have better social skills and leadership skills than others. The bottom line though is that any coach who has a season worse than 8-5 should be fired immediately. With the support fans give and donors supply, anything less is just unacceptable. Being ordinary or made fun of for winning 2/3's of your games gets old, but being a farce and a laughing stock is far worse.

So if Elko were to win back-to-back national championships and then go 7-6 the next year, he should be fired?

According to his logic.......yes!

So, you would fire Bear Bryant after the first year.

Elko has been one game away from an SEC Championship game appearance his first two years as a coach. Yes this year isn't going at all they way we think it should go. In this day and age, with a lot of variability out of the portal, we shouldn't be rioting over one bad season. Obviously changes should and will be made for next season
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

The HC contract should be based on a minimum of 8 regular season wins. Win 9 or more and there are bonuses based on the number of wins greater than 8. More bonuses for championships. Win less than 7 and the HC is subject to review, with termination and no buyout as options. Obviously if he won a championship the year before he should be given more rope. This type contract would not be agreed to by a coach like Saban, but if you could hire Saban I would create a new paradigm in coaching salaries like Bum Bright did with Jackie. We need to do something like that again IMO.

Jackie wasn't even the first choice.

Correct. I have posted that. It was Schembechler (sp?) at Michigan. He was set to come but decided to stay at MI. He recommended Jackie instead. We paid past top bank at the time. It worked.

ETA, the point is we went after the top or one of the top coaches, not an Elko or Stoops. It paid off. And Jackie was rolling at Pitt and beating top programs. He didn't come cheap.

You realize how many coaches we would go through…

the step back sucks but by your criteria jackie would have been a one-and-done. didn't crack the threshold until year 4.

We all would have fired Homer Norton in year 1, so he wouldn't have won the national championship in '39

Do you know anything about statistics ? The probability of Elko winning back-to-back national championships is, as we used to say, "zero.snake****".

And full disclosure, that's the same probability that he will win one national championship in his lifetime.

The ONLY valid ANNUAL goal for ALL Aggie Sports is a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

Who was his QB for both of those games? Who is responsible for fixing that issue?

Bama would've fired Saban after year 1 with this standard. Doubt they regret not doing that.

Edit: sorry I didn't see someone else had pointed this out

Just for reference, only 12 teams in DI-A have an all-time record over 0.67, or 8-4. I went with 8-4 because the 5 in 8-5 is typically a meaningless bowl game.
Fewer than 20 coaches with time at a major program are better than 0.67 lifetime, and that's going back to Pop Warner (1895-1938).
