Any coach at A&M who has a season worse than 8-5 should be fired

Obviously everyone wants a coach who will compete for a national championship. That's the goal. Some coaches are more likeable than others. Some coaches have better social skills and leadership skills than others. The bottom line though is that any coach who has a season worse than 8-5 should be fired immediately. With the support fans give and donors supply, anything less is just unacceptable. Being ordinary or made fun of for winning 2/3's of your games gets old, but being a farce and a laughing stock is far worse.

So if Elko were to win back-to-back national championships and then go 7-6 the next year, he should be fired?

Personally, my goal would be to win a championship, not to be consistently win 8 games. I'll take a 7-5 year every third year if we're one of the last 8 teams competing every third year.

That's the LSU formula vs the A&M formula. A&M has the 4th most SEC wins since 2012, both in terms of total wins and SEC wins, because we've been consistent. This chart show total wins.

LSU has had some below average years, but they've also had some special years, where everything came together and the competed for/won a championship.

R.C. Slocum (19892002): Fired following the 2002 season. He lost his last three games against Texas (2000, 2001, 2002), but he was technically re-assigned to serve as a special adviser to the university president rather than being strictly terminated on the spot. Even if counted as a functional firing, he is the only modern coach to even reach a three-game skid against Texas.

Good luck finding a good coach that accepts that requirement.

Not one good coach would take that offer.

Well you don't tell them ahead of time.

We will never have trouble finding a coach with what we are willing to pay. We just have to stop the stupid **** where we hand out big extensions after decent seasons that don't end in actually winning anything.

With this team and coaching staff there are no gimmes the rest of the way. Reed will keep us out of pretty much any game.

Under your logic, we would have a new coach every 2-3 years. That works for sure. Great plan.

We never have been, and never will be on the same tier as Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Ohio St and even Texas/Notre Dame most of the time. We will have out great season once every 10 years and then some good seasons have of those and then some bad seasons. And it doesn't matter how much money you throw at it. Even with $100MM NIL roster, in this day and age in the SEC with NIL, we would still be not a lock for finals. If you can't grasp this and expect more, than you will have disappointment 80% of the seasons for rest of your life.

We need to give our coaches time, and I've always had faith in Elko. BUT, my faith is starting to waver if Elko is still the guy... We need to stop giving coaches premature extensions the minute they provide some success. DDub, just curious, how much time do you think Elko has or when do you think, if at all, he will get fired?
joroye123

because I agree with what your saying, but at what point is it considered a failure for Elko? He has every resource and support possible.

Well - maybe this is the track Elko is on - this is just the off year. Last year was one of the better seasons in a while and had 10 NFL draft picks. I can understand a drop off. Just didn't think it would be this bad. We can hope.

We need to figure out why this is the case. We have all the resources needed.
Give me the guy who shoots for excellence and fails over the guy who shoots for mediocrity and succeeds.

Elko should get 3 years. So next year with signs of improvement in right direction. Assuming 6-6 this year, then next year 8-4 with good recruiting. If next year is less than that, then he's on chopping block. My two cents.

Elko has been one game away from an SEC Championship game appearance his first two years as a coach. Yes this year isn't going at all they way we think it should go. In this day and age, with a lot of variability out of the portal, we shouldn't be rioting over one bad season. Obviously changes should and will be made for next season

Look around college people and the SEC...Elko isnt the only coach having a terrible year.

Just wait for Texas...it is coming.

LSU is already there.

Arkansas....S Caronlina enough said.

Tennessee continues to disappoint.

Ole Miss, Miss St, Missouri, Florida...maybe they have their coaches.

What about Michigan?

Oregon?

So much disparity. Modern world of NIL and trying to win a Natty with Year 1 transfers and recruits.

It isnt an excuse for Elko and staff. But I do believe Elko will learn a TON this year and adapt for next year with a lot of new faces on staff. And kids behind center.

That's reality folks. Dreaming of firing Elko is NOT HAPPENING till at least two more terrible years in 2027 and 2028.

So if you hope Elko is fired, you are hoping we suck ass for two more seasons after this mess, too.

Now this is reality. Deal with it. Elko is here to stay.

I've been watching his games and was trying to figure out why he was winning. Finally realized there are no gimmicks or tricks - the coaches put the players in a position to succeed and the players simply execute their job. I think he can win at higher levels than New Mexico.

Correct; no one should riot after one bad season.

But, you lose to Kentucky and can't score a TD against Missouri, pitchforks are coming out of the garden shed.

Saban was 7-6 at Alabama his first season. He also had two winning records(barely) in his first 4 at Michigan State. Broke thru to 9-2 in his 5th season.

Admittedly It's different now with the portal and NIL but 1 poor season seems like a short sighted approach to me.

The HC contract should be based on a minimum of 8 regular season wins. Win 9 or more and there are bonuses based on the number of wins greater than 8. More bonuses for championships. Win less than 7 and the HC is subject to review, with termination and no buyout as options. Obviously if he won a championship the year before he should be given more rope. This type contract would not be agreed to by a coach like Saban, but if you could hire Saban I would create a new paradigm in coaching salaries like Bum Bright did with Jackie. We need to do something like that again IMO.
