It seems, if the Arky game is an indicator, that we expect to win by becoming almost exclusively a running offense???? If so, why not just go triple option and admit it???

Not sure this is the recipe for success moving forward as quality teams will just stack the box and dare Reed to be accurate.

I guess we will see - maybe Reed will find his pre-'25 t.u. "mojo" before we go to Mizzou. If not, then we better start working on some option plays.

Won't matter much though I guess if our defense still can't get to the QB or cover in the secondary - but that's a whole other topic post.

If we are going to be a primarily running team at least give the rock to our best back which is so obviously KJ Edwards

Franchione was known for his square peg into a round hole offensive philosophy w/ QBs. He at least had quality QBs who he ruined. Elko (Wiggins) hasn't done that - we just don't have very good QBs.

And I didn't see the OL opening up any significant running lanes.

On another note… PLAY #9 MORE!!!

We have to continue balancing the run-pass. If we don't, we totally eliminate Reeds one true ability - broken field scrambling.

IF Reed will continue to step into the pocket and not panic out the back door, our "passing" game can still be complimentary and important.

We were essentially balanced last night because almost all of Reed's rushing yards are associated with the passing game. Even though we likely won't be better than about 55% on completions, we still present a passing game threat if we execute effectively.

Reed's too small. They keep this up, he's going to run the risk of getting banged up against faster, more physical defenses.

And please design pass plays for the TE's. Kiotti looks like a weapon. Figure out how to get him the ball.

At this point running about 70% of the time is probably the right strategy to try to salvage a 7 win season.

Keep the recruiting class together, try to keep the best guys from transferring, and fix the rest in the portal

Our defense allowed 7 points yesterday. Only 9 other teams in all the FBS did that.

Gotta stay balanced but this was a great step back in direction. I think we win out after what I saw vs Arkansas

What's wrong with having a running offense? You build an offensive identity then play to your teams strength. We have a solid rb stable, and an oline that likes to push. Also doesnt put all the pressure on reeds arm.

Well unless you are 1995 Nebraska, it severely limits how much you can score. So your D needs to hold the other team to under 20 to have a chance

Probably because you can't install an option offense mid-season with a team that has never done it before?

I mean - "best option" doesn't mean "good option". We have a QB that can't effectively throw the ball and apparently a bench that is also lacking such ability.

Given that, I think you have to hope that you just work the running game and hope folks start to "get it" and we can consistently get yards.

Do I expect it to work against good teams? No.

Does it beat any other option that seems available that isn't "let's pretend this is a video game and install an entirely new offense that none of our coaches or players understand in 1 week" type of make believe? Probably.

Again, "best option" doesn't equal "good option" but it does beat "it doesn't work like that" options like turning Marcel into a dangerous QB or installing the triple option.

Not sure you can be called a running offense if you can't lineup under center to gain 1/2 yard for a first down.

He definitely needs more chances to make a difference. Why he didn't play more after that one play is puzzling?

I've been very negative of Elko/Wiggins with their gameplan this year and lack of adjustments but last night was a very good change.

They made the adjustment that Reed is not a serviceable passing QB so they have moved to a run heavy offense.

They have started playing Edwards and Baker more which I hope continues because each of them are much better than Owens.

The o-line looked improved but Arkansas is terrible so we will see how much they have really improved next week against Missouri.

The run heavy approach is the formula moving forward and I applaud them for moving that direction. Will it be good enough to beat UT, Bama, Missouri and the sips? Probably not but it gives us the best chance because if we continued to do a balanced attack like we did against LSU and Kentucky then we already know that will only bring losses

When you have a QB that can't throw, and WRs that can't catch, you have to focus on running.

I don't think it's either/or. He runs opportunistically when the field breaks. He doesn't run in zone read or option because he doesn't have the skills/vision for it.

Basically, you let him make the plays he's capable of making. Passing game-step-up-scramble when available.

Jmo but you are in incorrect on this . We have to figure out a way to spread good defenses out for the run game to be successful. You can stretch them out in different ways but we better get more balanced if we want to compete . Figuring out how to have an effective passing game >>> abandoning the passing game . We won't be able to play keep away against anyone else in the SEC except Arkansas throwing less than 30% of the offensive snaps. We don't need to be throwing 50% + of the snaps but we do need to have a credible air threat or we'll lead the conference in punts.
