"Early rankings don't matter"

I'm already tired of the whole "rankings don't matter this early" crap people are saying.

Look at what happened to us last year. Once the CFP rankings came out, Ohio State and Indiana were basically immovable ahead of us. We were undefeated, had a tougher schedule than both of them, and kept winning; however, we never got the benefit of the doubt to move past either one. They had established the perception that they were the top two teams, and we had to keep proving ourselves from behind them.

Same thing happened with the one-loss teams.

Texas Tech was ranked ahead of us among the one-loss teams before we ever lost. Oregon, Ole Miss and Georgia were all established ahead of us, too. When we finally lost to Texas, we didn't get evaluated from scratch against those teams, we dropped behind the entire group.

And that's exactly why early rankings matter.

They don't necessarily determine where you finish. But they establish a baseline of perception. Once that baseline exists, two teams with similar records don't necessarily get treated equally. The team that was already viewed as "better" gets the benefit of the doubt.

And in the CFP, that matters enormously because the ranking isn't just a number. It determines your seeding, your bye, your opponent and your path.

We went from No. 3 to No. 7 after one loss and went from a first-round bye to playing the toughest opponent in the first round, Miami, who ultimately made the national championship game.

So yes, it's early. A lot will change.

But "early rankings don't matter" is simply not true. Last year was a pretty damn good demonstration of why.

Indiana was not ranked highly last year at seasons start . Didn't seem to matter to them.

1. Indiana was unranked. And then ran the table. Odd point to make.
2. If we go 12-1, we will be a top 4 seed. If we go 10-2, we will make the playoffs. Nothing else matters.

When you're in the SEC/Big 10, it doesn't matter. Beating LSU in two weeks does

The rest of the year is all going to be about tu, Ohio St, ND, Miami, and LSU. That's what they all want to talk about, and they will do everything to set up a tu and Ohio St rematch. The stage is set for the TV executives.

The end justifies the means when it comes to CFP rankings.

1. Beat LSU

2. Beat sip. That game is critical for us. Elko cannot go 0-3 against cow.

He cannot, but likely will. Thus is our 2nd best Elko team, and the best sip team he'll have faced.

Tech moved ahead of us only after we lost.

We were 7 spots ahead of them in the AP this time last year. Indiana was behind tech. Penn state was #2. LSU #3.

OP has no clue what he's talking about. Only the CFP rankings matter.

This is like tu saying the OSU loss cost them a chance at the postseason. No, it was the other two losses. You don't get to ***** when you don't show up every week. We can't say we deserved better seeding when we only scored 3 in the playoff game we did get.

Schools with larger fanbases get more attention. Not former students…fanbases.

Hope that helps…

This. We make fun of schools with t shirt fans. We should aspire to that level of fandom. Nobody in the real world gives a F about A&M. We haven't earned it.

I don't know. I feel last year had we lost two games, we wouldn't have made it.

Depends on the rankings. The AP, which didn't factor into the CFP, had Indiana at 19 (and us at 20) in the preseason. From there, they went (week by week) to 23, 22, 19, 11, 8, 7, and then 3rd on Oct. 7 after beating Oregon by 10 on the road. For the first CFP ranking, they were 2nd and we were 3rd. Ohio St., who was the top ranked CFP team to start, had wins over t.u. and Illinois at the time, and hadn't really been challenged except for their 7 point win over t.u., a game that wasn't that close.

Meanwhile, we barely beat overrated ND and LSU teams and struggled against Auburn and Ark. Frankly, the rankings were about right at the time and had little to do with preseason. However, I agree with the OP in sentiment as the rankings are simply a popularity contest. Why did it take, for example, Indiana over a month to crack the top 10? Everyone that said their schedule was weak was full of ***** They were the best team in college football from start to finish and while I didn't predict they'd win the title at the start of the season necessarily, I did say they were far better than they were given credit for being.

Yet because they didn't have "history" or weren't the "sexy pick," they didn't get the respect they deserved. When are we going to learn that high school-like popularity standards are STUPID?

Why does it matter how far one goes into the playoffs if you can't beat the eventual national champion at home? Guess it's fun to spend $$$ on air fare and hotels in a new place.

We have six games against top 25 teams: four road games at No. 7 LSU, No. 20 Missouri, No. 10 Alabama, and No. 24 Oklahoma, and two home games against No 15 Tennessee, and NO. 1 Texas. Elko needs to beat Texas because he cannot afford to go 0-3 against them, including 0-2 at home.

Wait … we barely beat LSU? We beat them by 24 and they scored a late garbage time TD. That was an ass kicking. Your point about Auburn and especially Arkansas are good ones.

Likely why, because the college football season just completed week 2, and you're high on the horned dildos? I just don't understand why so many Ags are resigned to a loss against those pillow biters. We're the fightin' Texas Aggies, yet so many here are frightened Texas Aggies.

How can elko not afford to go 0-3? It's more like the athletic department cannot afford to do anything about it if he does due to their bone headed contract with Jimbo.

Yeah it's probably one of my biggest pet peeves on here. People love to say "doesn't matter-just win". We're not going to "just win". We're going to lose a handful of games. The higher our ranking is prior to those loses, the better chance we will have of still making the CFP.

It would be asinine of them to do anything. Too many people around here define success by how we do against Texas, cuz we're insecure pansies

And ^^^THIS^^^ is the problem. Texas, yes is a rival, but they are just another game on the schedule. We lost to them last year and made the playoffs. The goal is NOT to beat Texas and all is fine, the goal is to win it all. I don't care of we lose the next 20 years to those ******s, as long as we put ourselves in a position to win or lose that game and still make the CFP's.

The old mentality of losing all the games "but that one" has got to stop.

Remember this, BOTH of our wins against Alabama came in the same season they won the National Championship. Sips can pound their chests all the want with their 75-37-3 bull****, I'll take the championships.

This is exactly why im not a fan of the ranking system. Its there for a reason, but if everybody has A&M as a laughing stock, then the perception will never go in out favor when it counts.
