Texas A&M adds former Tennessee CB Rickey Gibson III via transfer portal

Former Tennessee cornerback Rickey Gibson III has announced his intentions to transfer to Texas A&M. After missing most of 2025 with an injury, the 6-foot and 185-pound cover man will be expected to compete for a starting role in Aggieland.

The Aggies have made another addition to their 2026 roster today via the transfer portal with the commitment of former Tennessee CB Rickey Gibson III.

The 6-foot, 185-pound native of Trussville, Ala., is the 13th pledge for Mike Elko in this January window.

Unfortunately, Gibson only played 19 snaps in the 2025 season after suffering a season-ending injury in Week 1. However, he gained a reputation as one of the more reliable cover men in the SEC with a very strong 2024 campaign that saw him start all 12 games and record 32 tackles with two tackles for loss and force a fumble. He also broke up five passes. As a freshman in 2023, he appeared in all 13 games for the Volunteers, mostly on special teams and as a reserve defensive back.

He’ll be expected to come into A&M and compete for a starting role opposite Dezz Ricks.

Keep it here as portal reaction and breakdown continue to roll in for our TexAgs Premium subscribers.

I was not expecting this many guys coming in from other SEC programs. Interesting to say the least

I wish could had someone to come in and compete WITH Dezz Ricks

Great news! You know it is possible that he could compete with Dezz as well. Our pass D was much improved this year. Hopefully, takes another step up next year.

Dezz Ricks was solid all year and so was our pass defense. On run defense let us down.

People complaining about our pass defense are either expecting perfection, are scared from past aggie secondaries or just didn't pay attention.

Rankings wise, our pass defense was much much better than our run defense. More importantly both games we lost this year, our run defense is what let us down

Hopefully he fully recovers from whatever injury he had. Glad to see he didn't play this year because Tennessee had a terrible pass defense this year

One could argue that in both losses over the past year, inconsistent passing accuracy forced the offense into a one-dimensional posture. That predictability blunted the run game, undermined the offense as a whole, and kept the defense on the field for extended stretches. Under that strain, the run defense failed first, well before the pass defense did. But, as this topic is focused on defense and not global root causes, I agree with your point.

To be a CB at A&M, you gotta be III

Ricks was solid this year and will likely be a top CB in the conference next year.

I was at every home game, but I must have seen a different Dezz Ricks than everyon else saw. The one I saw was a pass interference machine.

How many PI penalties did he commit?

Best portal addition yet. Big time addition and much needed.

Wait

Are you crapping on another existing player?

You never do that one.

Hard to tell if you are football ignorant or just an A-Hole.

Realistic. These kids are paid professionals now, they're not above criticism. Ricks was fine this year and I'm sure he'll improve, but there were stints where he got picked on, and he committed too many PIs. I mostly took issue with the wording of the post, like he was a superstar who couldn't possibly be pushed

Yeah, if only our run defense would have been better against Miami, we would have won 3-0.

In fairness, bad QB1 play let us down just as much, if not more.

That means he's in tight coverage, PI is going to happen from time to time. At least he's not getting beat by 10 yards then the discussion would be different. So hopefully he can clean up some of those PI's.

That's a great pick up at the CB position.

This exactly. Are people really longing for the halcyon days of Debione Renfrow and Myles Jones? Or whoever else was getting dusted by elite SEC WRs?

Give me the CB in step with the WR even if he commits PI or if the throw and catch are just so spot-on nothing can be done about it. I got really tired of seeing our CBs getting absolutely pantsed in years past

I liked the days of Kevin Smith, Mickey Washington, Derick Frazier, Aaron Glenn, and Ray Mickens (throw in Kip Corrington for good measure).
