Not looking good for the conference as a whole. Currently 2-4 in the post season looking like it's going to be 2-5 if Illinois holds on. Has the sec dropped back to where every other conference is with NIL and the transfer portal leveling everything out?

Probably noting more than the ceaseless ebb and flow of conference success. Some years it is the B10 on top and some years its the SEC. A few years with the B10 as the big boy, which is debatable regardless, is nothing to be to concerned with.

5 teams in the CFP with 3 teams remaining says otherwise.

Bowl games are no longer cared about by anyone, least of all the players. Anyone who thinks they have a shot at the nfl sits out, and anyone who thinks they have a shot at a better deal is in the portal.

It's not a conference competition.

Now more than ever you can't judge anything based on non CFP bowl games due to all the opt-outs.

There are multiple SEC teams with 2-3 conference losses that would have been undefeated in the Big 12 or ACC regular season.

I'm not concerned. I'm just wondering what yall think if NIL and transfer portal evened out the conferences. I believe the sec bowl record last year too wasn't very great either.

I understand your point, but wouldn't that be evened out between the teams then at that point it comes down to who has the better depth?

understand that point. Sadly we contributed to the bad record having Miami walk all over us.

SEC hasn't given a **** about Bowl games for several years now and the Big Ten has conference envy and something to prove.

With that said, the Big Ten hasn't played an OOC team worth a damn all year including this post season...

Boise State
James Madison
Central Michigan
New Mexico
Clemson (7-5, 4-4 ACC)
Tennessee

Bowls outside the playoffs are completely and utterly meaningless and the results have 0.0 bearing on how good or bad those programs were in that season.

The Globetrotters win more exhibition games than anyone, doesn't make them a good basketball team.

The Big 10 is clearly the best league right now with the last two national champions. To me the most significant factors are the transfer portal has leveled the playing field and Nick Saban is now an analyst on ESPN Gameday. And Curt Cignetti has become a coaching legend in only two years.

Look at the starting lineups. SEC teams are loaded with NFL talent and have as many as 8-12 starters or significant playing time players opting out. Other teams are playing pretty much their starters minus a couple of players opting out. It's not apples to apples here. Look more at the SEC vs other conferences in games that matter and full rosters. Yes, it's evening out some with NIL but the SEC and Big 10 are still the cream of the crop.

Who cares, as long as we keep ****ting the bed in our bowl games I don't care what the rest of the SEC does.

LOL at people that think non-playoff bowl games say literally anything about strength of conferences.

Maybe not a bowl game but Bama got pummeled by a 5-7 ACC team. The narrative seems to be that only the SEC has NFL talent that opts out that doesn't care about bowls.

This doesn't take away from how good the SEC is as a whole….but perhaps teams (OU, maybe Bama) didn't deserve a shot in the playoffs

This is what some still do not understand. The majority of these teams in the "other bowls" are not the same team they were just weeks before.

Bowls are cooked. Everyone knew this would happen which is why it has taken so long to transition to a playoff.

Remember, FCS has been doing it for quite some time and at a high level. This is why I believe all the "debate" about expansion is useless. The CFP is going to expand. They (media/ncaa,unis) have to if they are gonna sustain that mayo bowl cash that they know they will be losing soon.

That said, I do not think "they" thought they would be seeing $25 Cotton Bowl tickets either so who knows.

SEC had 5 teams in the playoffs, 2 more than any other conference. As a result games further down the line are extremely skewed.

Based on SEC CG tie breakers and final rankings.

SEC #1 yet to play
SEC #2 played SEC #5 (Bama vs OU), now faces B1G #1
SEC #3 crushed a G5 team, now faces SEC #1
SEC #4 lost by one score to the #2 ACC Team (their tie breakers are stupid)
SEC #6 will play B1G #5 today
SEC #7 will play B1G #6 today
SEC #8 lost to ACC #1 Team
SEC #9 lost to B1G #8
SEC #10 lost to B12 #4

Today and tomorrow will tell how comparable the SEC is to the B1G. Outside of that you've got middle to bottom tier SEC teams playing teams at the top of other conferences.

If Georgia (SEC #1) beat Cal (#8 ACC) do you really think people would take it as a referendum on the ACC?

This.

It's amazing how context flies over peoples heads.

While the record isn't great, when your 8th and 10th teams play another conferences 1st and 4th, it isn't exactly a real telling stat.

Several factors, some new some old:

  • SEC puts more teams into the post-season Texas A&M vs. Miami was SEC #4 (using CFP rankings) vs. ACC #1. None of the other SEC teams that have played OOC and lost were ranked, which means they were SEC #8 or worse. This has been going on forever.
  • The portal has spread out the talent very effectively at the second- and third-string level. SEC teams still have an overall talent advantage, but not much of a depth advantage over other conferences now. This is new.
  • With the addition of tu and Oklahoma, there is more wear and tear in the SEC schedules than ever. This is newer and exacerbates the problems with the last item.

Bowl records only matter if they favor you. If they don't favor you, then it's because of opt outs, not caring, coaching changes, etc.

As a CFP team, it's unfair for us to opine on the value of these JV cute little bowl games.

We are in an elite group and because of that it is natural for us to not place much care or interest in the mids and basics.

Let them enjoy their little bowl games. We will enjoy our better class of elite company.

This. I never root for any SEC team unless it directly helps the Aggies. The SEC Network is almost unwatchable, a bunch of old south homers. Greg Sanky is a snake. They would never bring in Georgia Tech, Florida State, Clemson but gladly brought in Texas and told us they did not care what we thought. Now with games next year against OU, Arkansas, Texas Missouri we are back to playing Big 12 games again. The only good thing about the SEC is the money we get.

I knew as soon at Texas forced their way into the conference things would go downhill. ;-)

It's a lot easier to prep for one game a month away like it's the Super Bowl then grinding it every single week with a full SEC conference schedule.
