Mike Elko has a very difficult big decision to make Jan 2

The list of talented QB's in the portal is as high as it has ever been.
A&M will have a different offense next season Wiggins is not Klein.
If he and Wiggins want to buy a QB the shelf is full of talent.

Elko says Reed has room to grow, but do you put a season and maybe your job on potential?

I think the only way we hit the market for QB this offseason is if we believe Reed asks for too much.

I don't think any of those guys is an upward move.

According to texags, 3/4 didn't play against any real teams. And the last one is currently the temu version of what we already have.

You don't think Reed is the answer but Lagway is?
Doesn't make sense.

I imagine Elko is sitting pretty secure right now.

The NFL fan trap is playing out in college right now. People believe almost any available option is better than what they have. The reality is there is only a handful of guys who will ever be great at the position, so you are left with a ton of flawed players. Fans just obsess and focus way too hard on their guys flaws.

Reed is the starter for us next year unless he pulls a Imaleavya did to Tennessee or he gets injured.

Since he is a multimillionaire I hope he buys the best QB guru money can buy so he can hit the WR screen in stride and be accurate in the ten yard or less throws. If he fixes those two areas then we will be very good next year.

I think the market for Reed will dictate a lot of things. If someone is going to pay him top dollar approx. $5M then it's an easy decision to get someone else. Elko is a smart man and has previously said that he's involved in all the GM operational spending aspects of this program.

I believe Elko will make the best decision for next year's roster at QB whether that's retaining Marcel or not. There are a lot of needs at both OL and DL for next year's roster to be competitive in the SEC.

Maybe next season we take a small step back so that might factor into the decision on whether or not to spend big at QB. In the new NIL/9 conf. game SEC it's going to be difficult to contend for a playoff spot every single year.

How might Reed react to Elko going out and brining another QB onto the roster? Is the competitive nature of a new QB something that motivates him to become a better player or does he pout and regress even further? Either way, at the very least, having a more robust backup can't be something people scoff at.

We aren't going to spend on a big transfer QB1 and pay Reed, so there probably wouldn't be anything for him to react to on this.

How about spreading that money out to get the best OL and DL players in the portal? Maybe a head hunting LB, too

I agree Reed can get better. I try to be supportive and not talk about coaches. I thought Klein was not very good as a play caller in the big games. I thought the 3 pocket passes late against Miami was bad. First, you have to get the ball to Craver or Concepcion. Even if on first down you run a jet sweep. Second, I think you have to roll Reed out and tell him if it is not open throw it away or run. Leaving him in the pocket to make decisions in a goal line situation where the room is tight is not good. Reed problem to me is decision making. Some of his intercepions late in the year I have no idea what he was seeing. They were some real head scratchers. It is not lack of talent, so those things can be fixed. I think Wiggins will be a better OC/play caller than Klein. He has been around some offenses that get the ball to their play makers. Saban says always call the play that gets the ball to the player that can win the game. Don't call a play just because you think it is the right play. Always go to the player who can make a play. I think Hart and Causaga are the guys the Aggies want to keep. So you have to explain to them that bringing a new QB in is simply for competition.Or you have to be willing to let probably Hart go.

I don't think we have seen Reeds peak. Remember when Bo Nix kept making stupid decisions at Auburn? He goes to Oregon and was great. Reeds problem is not a lack of talent. I hope Wiggins
And a new QB coach can turn his decision making around. I think the right coaching can.

I place blame on the coaches for the way the Miami game went. I think we went in thinking we'd lean on them like we had opponents all year. When the running game struggled, we continued to just hope things would turn (maybe like they did in the Mizzou game). Never happened. IMO, we should have scrapped our style and gone up tempo the entire 2nd half... even our final drive, aided by tempo and penalties to get down the field. We then put Reed in a situation where we are taking time, and he has to sit in the pocket in limited space. Makes no sense. Like said above, call a sweep and have the next play ready to go if you don't score.

Reed has been mistake-prone. The ND script would be a lot different if they pick off one of his passes on the final possession, but they didn't. I didn't find the last few games that shocking. He's young - there is still time to get better. All up to him.

Football continues to be a hard game. You don't just snap your fingers and get better overnight. The portal and fan expectations are not set in reality... when there are so many fan bases throwing $ around.

The reason we struggled to run the ball is because we wouldn't run the damn ball. 50+ drop backs for Reed. 18 handoffs to RBs. 2 to Concepcion. The OL and RBs didn't even have a chance to get in rhythm. Klein wanted homeruns and wasn't patient enough to let them go to work. Same thing for the texas game. Almost the entire offensive output rested on what Marcel did.

Reed is not good, we need a QB that shows up when it matters, not just to interviews and podcasts.

Mestemaker - Pass. Not even has he not had success vs even a low level P4 team, he hasn't even played one and struggled in his only two difficult G5 games.

Sorsby - This stat line against the even halfway quality opponents he faced is absymal. Other than BYU, who Tech proved to be god awful at defense, this guy sucks ass when not playing against sub 75 ranked defenses.

Hoover - Had pretty much the same stat line as Reed against a far worse schedule. Pass

Lagway - You think Reed throws interceptions but you want the guy who outdid him? Pass

We pick Marcel or we pick one from the portal. You do not get to have both. It's a bad use of our NIL money to give Marcel 1.5+ million and another QB another 1.5 million.

In my opinion, it's a really really bad idea to tell Marcel to kick rocks from a locker room and culture perspective. For better or worse, he's our guy next year. With the tougher schedule and teams figuring out how to trick him in passing situations, next year is his prove it year as a QB who can win championships in college football.

LOL his accuracy numbers are high and he leads the country in passing. Also, Cam Ward and Chambliss say hello.

Reed is staying. We already got that message from Elko.

And we're not getting a potential starter to come in and compete with him. Nor are we paying starter level money to two QB.

So we can drop this idea, and the 50 or so threads that talk about it.

Cam Ward played at Washington State. Here's 2023..

He had played and performed well for the most part against similar competition to what he would face at Miami. Mestemaker hasn't even PLAYED against a low level P4 team.

Chambliss played at Ferris State. And he wasn't brought in to be the starter. That was Austin Simmons from the 2023 class. Chambliss showed potential in their QB battle but wasnt named the starter until Simmons was injured early in the season. So not even Ole Miss knew what they had until they were forced. He's essentially an outlier. There are infinite more times where that same situation turns into a guy like him being average at best and riding the bench.

Try knowing what you're talking about before running your mouth next time.

Haha. We are not pursuing a starting QB in the portal. We have MANY holes to fill in our lineup. Starting QB is not one. Maybe we bring in an experienced guy like Zeno as an insurance policy but what we really need is OL, DL, CB, TE, WR.

Reed is 0-5 in games that advance the program in the last 2 years.

2024, win 1 of our last 3 conference games and we advance to the championship game. Went 0-3.

2025, win the final regular season game to advance to the conference championship game, went 0-1. Then had the worst game of his career in the playoff game, for 0-2.

I'd like to see what is behind door number 2, please.

Wish in one hand and crap in another is the approach we will take. Then be optimistic for the next one when next year goes like this year went.

11-2 advanced the program whether your little girt temper tantrum can admit it or not. ON top of that, beating Notre Dame in South Bend advanced the program, as did beating LSU at home in 24 and in Death Valley in 25.

Getting to the playoffs absolutely advanced the program.

Run along now

We have desperate need at many positions where we lost starting production. QB is not in the top 15 areas of need.

ND was the only game Reed dropped back 40+ times and the game went ok. Keep him under that and he plays pretty well. But SCar, texas and Miami were all games Klein placed directly on Reed's shoulders.

I blame Klein far more than Reed. Miami knew they couldn't throw the damn ball, and their last 3 drives they threw a total of 2 passes. Only threw 7 times in the second half total. We, on the other hand, only handed the ball off 8 times in the second half. Stupidity
