We purchased a lake house out at camp creek a little over 5 years ago as is with all the contents. The house belonged to the grand daughter of an A&M professor who has a building named after him. We found these jerseys in a dresser upstairs. They appear to be vintage and real football jerseys. The numbers are stitched on and there are places on them that have been repaired. Can anyone give us any information on these?

From Chat GPT

Everything about these points to college-issued gear, not retail replicas:

Cotton / wool knit fabric (pre-nylon, pre-polyester)
Hand-stitched felt numbers (irregular edges, thick felt)
Repaired areas (classic re-stitching from reuse)
Long sleeves (standard pre-1950s)
No nameplates (didn't exist yet)
Uniform striping styles that match early Southwest football

Jersey 1 White #63 (top image)

Likely: Texas A&M practice / road jersey
Era: Late 1930s mid 1940s

Why:
White cotton body with maroon felt numerals
Thin double sleeve stripes (a very 1930s40s look)
Numbers are felt, not tackle twill (twill became common later)
Loose, boxy cut worn over pads, not modern fitted style

These were often rotated practice jerseys, which explains repairs and wear.

Jersey 2 Maroon #61

Likely: Texas A&M practice or scrimmage jersey
Era: 1940s

Why:
Heavy maroon knit (cotton/wool blend)
Off-white felt numerals (aging patina is correct)
No shoulder yoke seam (earlier construction)
Sleeve length and stripe spacing matches WWII-era college gear

This one screams wartime football (A&M continued playing during WWII, often with modified rosters).

Jersey 3 Maroon #50

Likely: Texas A&M practice jersey
Era: Midlate 1940s

Why:
Same maroon tone as #61
Slightly cleaner number edges possibly later than the #61
Identical sleeve stripe pattern same equipment run
Practice numbers were often reused year-to-year

This and the #61 were almost certainly teammates.

Jersey 4 Gray #14 (bottom image)

This one is special.

Likely: Texas A&M scrimmage / spring practice jersey
Era: Late 1930s early 1940s

Why:
Gray body was commonly used for offense vs defense in practice
Red/maroon felt numerals
Multiple narrow sleeve stripes very pre-1950
Thinner fabric designed for repeated drills

This is exactly the kind of jersey that would never be sold, only issued.

Why these are almost certainly Texas A&M
Color palette matches historic Aggie maroon
Striping matches known A&M practice photos from the era
Professor connection fits perfectly (faculty families often kept gear)
Numbers align with linemen-heavy roster usage (50s60s range common for OL/DL)

And importantly:

No pro team wore this exact combination of fabric, cut, and felt style at this time.

Simple. Contact the archivist at Cushing Library. He/she and the library are the keepers of all things A&M history, including sports memorabilia, and can pinpoint it exactly for you, down to the player. Awesome find.

ETA: and they're always happy to help.

You're welcome. You'd be amazed by the amount of items they have stored that are so incredibly interesting and valuable. Hidden gem on campus for the most part. Hope you report back after you find out about them.

There's a User Name "The Glove" (I think Class of 69) and should he see this post, he is one fellow that will know. He has a ton of Aggie memorabilia. I saw someone mentioned Cushing. I've never used them as a resource but they should be helpful. Also, if you call TexAgs and discuss this post....they might help to get you in contact with "The Glove".

Sidenote: I collected Aggie football player likenesses for years, cards, magazines, pictures, pencils, cups, etc. One day I called the AD to see if they had interest in buying as i had heard they were looking for items. The gal that answered the phone told me they had a huge collection of Aggie memorabilia 10's, 20's, 30's 40's stuff and it would be likely going up for sale. I never heard anything more about the collection getting sold or given away. My memory has faded a bit since that call, but it took place after Fran's or Sumlin's stint .....I'm leaning toward the time period when Sumlin was leaving. Anyway, the gal told me there were lots of jersey's, pants, footballs and leather helmets..

Totally fake.

I'll come over tonight, and get rid of them since you've had to deal with this ridiculousness to this point.

Just send the address....

Did some searching online and came across the pictures in the links below. Would note that the captions for these say that they are courtesy of Cushing library, so would echo reaching out there as others have suggested.

Great. I worked with the Library system during my career in marketing their services and for fundraising to alums. They love this stuff, and hold all the great ag military and sports memorabilia. Hope you get tons of answers.
