He DID apologize, so let's give him that. How many of us have made similar, stupid, comments in anger -- only to realize, no, that wasn't right and we really messed up? I know I have. You're a liar if you say you haven't -- maybe not at his age, but at some point in your life. So then, the knock on him is immaturity.
Even if he got help writing the apology by ANY means, let's not automatically assume it isn't genuine. We'll have plenty of time to figure whether it was or not. What he said wasn't completely unforgivable. Technically, not much is, but that comment certainly isn't.
With that said, it appears that he and his brother aren't THAT different, given his brother's recent, stupid actions at a Vandy game. I'm reminded of the quote that goes something like, "adversity doesn't build (or necessarily build) character; it reveals it." Hopefully, in this case, it actually builds it. Either way, I'm betting he'll be forgotten about in 2 years unless he does something else stupid.
