He didn't retire, like Urban Meyer left for medical reasons.

So one is a public misinterpretation that Kyle corrected. Urban's possibly was true temporarily and that was convenient for him…

Kyle Whittingham stepped down after serving as Utah head coach for 21 years. Michigan is a great opportunity for Whittingham to continue coaching.

This late in the coaching carousel, there aren't many candidates available for UM to hire…so bring Witt in, pay him a bunch of money with little pressure attached, and position the program for the next era.
