Staff: feel free to delete if you have a master plan for this.

Apparently C J Baxter is in the portal. Do we recruit him?

Does he play LB? If so, yes. If not, maybe.

Maybe. But in this era of college football, if there's an available player out there who would be an upgrade to what we have here then you have to go after him. With Moss, Daniels, and EJ on the way out I think we absolutely should buy an experienced RB for '26.

I disagree with this mindset when it comes up every year. We operate in a world of finite resources. We have to identify our priorities and then spend accordingly. If we throw money at every really good player in the portal, we'll have less to devote to our positions of need (like OL, DT, maybe a WR to replace KC). And then you end up with glaring weaknesses.

We've got 2 incoming true-freshmen RBs faster/better than Baxter, so nope. Plus he'd cost a lot of money and likely get hurt again.

No he blew his knees out and hasn't been the same since. He was great his freshman year but was injured in fall camp the next season and redshirted. This year not as effective.

We might seek a big RB in the portal. At 227 lbs, he may well fit the bill but who knows what the market will bear when the portal opens.

We're losing 3 experienced/starting caliber RBs. Seems like that IS a position of need. Especially considering injuries. I do agree that OL should be the priority.

After going through a few cycles of this now, it seems like, generally speaking, there are two types of players that end up in the portal:

Type 1: Guys who were not highly sought after recruits coming out of high school who found success at a G5 school or a mid to bottom tier Big 12/ACC school and are looking to level up and play in the SEC on a championship contending team (KC Concepcion, Cashius Howell)

Type 2: Guys who were highly ranked recruits in high school but ended up buried on the depth chart at elite programs (Amari Niblack, Julio Humphrey)

It seems like the first type are more likely to be major contributors at good SEC programs. There are always exceptions, but I will probably be more excited about portal additions of the first type moving forward.

We will have two returning RBs with significant snaps in Owens and Morrow. Bringing in two freshman. If we take a back from the portal, it'll be an older depth guy like EJ (who turned out to be a good piece for us).

I think we'll chase another corner and safety.

We'll look for a guard or two.

Always on the hunt for DTs and Edge rushers but so is everyone else.

Probably a WR, but I feel good about that room even if/when KC goes. We'll chase a couple though. I'd like to find a true X. Maybe Jerome Myles will get healthy and be a 5-star.

I'll give Elko credit. He freaking nailed the portal last year. KC, Craver, Boerkircher. I guess Howell and Hayes were in his first portal haul.

Baxter was top five RBs in the country, maybe even higher when he was recruited. But then he was injured (multiple knee injuries) in fall camp after a good freshman year behind an NFL bound RB.

Now he may be able to get back into form with S&C during the off-season but he was not a standout for the sips this year.

We'll definitely try to take a bigger back

Probably look at a true WR1.

Could go after a TE. Elko has every offseason

Likely 2-3 OL, 3-4 if Bisontis leaves

Like 2-3 DL.

Maybe a LB.

Maybe a DB or even 2.

Maybe a kicker

it will be interesting to see who the new offensive coordinator will be and how that might influence our needs.

No way. RB is NOT an area of need one bit. This entire discussion is pointless. Ruben is the man. We have Morrow and two more freshman studs. And I am sure I missed someone....

Elko has a process and RB likely isnt a portal need or great way to spend limited funds. Baxter isnt all that anyway.

They also have a big DL that just got the portal that might need a look.

Man everyone is always trying to leave that cesspool.

Why has everybody forgotten about Tiger? He holds the career rushing record at DeSoto HS and could develop into a very good SEC RB.

Absolutely. This is part of Elko's coaching DNA, with him spending so much time at really small schools and having to learn to evaluate talent at the margins.

This could just be the beginning of a negotiation for more money. I would be shocked if horn got outbid for a player they want to keep. The portal isn't even open so this may be putting out feelers for what his options are.

Nailed it

Its honestly why we need to continue scheduling mid-level OOC games. Its the best recruiting tool to raid their best players.
