It feels like it's time for bowls to end for non-playoffs.

But it sure is fun to watch ND get raked over the coals for being titty-babies about bowing out.

While I think there are definitely too many bowl games, I don't want them to end. I love have daily college football for the better part of 2 weeks while I'm at work

Did you enjoy A&M playing Okla State in the Texas Bowl 23'?
USC Las Vegas Bowl 24'?

"Too much" football is better than no football.

This is an oft repeated platitude. It's a bunch of bunk.
It waters down and cheapens the product.
It's nothing more than another symptom of the money disease that has completely infected the game.

This is the good part of it that people seem to forget. It's fun to watch your team in a match up that's pretty rare in the history. Not every time, like Ok State, but it usually is. USC was a fun game, Duke was a fun game, I remember the Ags playing Penn St, Ohio St, UCLA, Miss State with Jackie coaching them

It's not as big a deal these days for players in big programs, and seeing the best players opt out takes something away from it, but it's still enjoyable. Plus, more football is a good thing.

Not disagreeing, but if the options are no football or lessor games, then you can choose to not watch. Plenty of us would rather watch the games, even if they're inferior, than have nothing.

OTOH, it would give many of us opportunities to use the time for other things that would likely be a better use of time, but I personally enjoy just having games on in the background, if nothing else.

As others have said, I long for how things used to be, but thats never coming back. It will only get worse, and eventually will disappear in favor of only competitive games. Until that happens, it's all we get, so ill still watch regardless. And it makes the best games even better IMO.

Those players who will never get another chance to play after college, which is more than 90%, CARE! That has always been my motive for supporting college athletics.

The more talented team (during season) will be the least talented team (post season) in these "non-playoff bowls",

Was it the Las Vegas bowl that the Ags were extremely short handed and had to teach a QB that turned safety back into a QB

Bowls will come to an end soon, and it will coincide with further playoff expansion so that more teams can participate in the post season

16, 20 or 24 teams here we come

Only when we reach a point where the winning coach gets a bucket of mayonnaise poured on him will I concede that there are too many damn bowl games ...

Oh, wait ...

This is going to lead to the NCAA worst nightmare. Even worse than NIL. Unionization. Eff em both.

Employees are paid to work. You don't work you don't get paid. Same goes for coaches jumping ship. Contracts matter when unionized

I guess I wasn't paying attention and didn't realize ISU and KSU both opted out as well. They were both fined $500,000. Seems like an odd choice.

^^^^This x10

The bowl trip of 5 or 6 days, no matter what crappy bowl it is, will be the last time they will be wined and dined and given free swag and electronics. It means a lot, plus many will get extra practice in for next season and an off chance of impressing the coaches when some lose interest or opt out.

Possibly lack of players
I am guessing many of the starters are going to be in the Portal

If ND accepted a bowl bid, they might lose that bowl, giving credibility to their CFP ranking. Too much risk there. They have to protect their grievance! Who cares about being a good sport and accepting the hand you are dealt.

Some of these schools lose money going to bowl games. With all of the added uncertainty with coaching changes, NIL and transfer rules, the cost/benefit may not be positive.

Cost of running these programs is skyrocketing and spending money on a meaningless bowl game that has no financial return is simply a dumb decision. Most of these bowl games have little attendance anyway. They are TV events now.

TV has ruined college football, fitting that it will be their demise.

Do the players' NIL deals not include extra payments for a bowl game, CCG, and advancing in the playoffs like the coaches do? If so that needs to be fixed ASAP.

Not if their agents are smart. I wouldn't want my asset risking injury before the next auction.

Under the current reality there is a reverse side of this coin. The talented and hungry 2nd/3rd string guy that hasn't had an opportunity to shine gets a full game start. It's his chance to get some eyeballs on what he can do.

Maybe they should have a NIT like tournament.

But seriously, I agree that if the players are getting paid, they need to play.

This is why the whole NIL thing is so damn stupid. They aren't getting paid for their Name, Image, or Likeness. They are getting paid to play. Make them sign contracts that are tied to playing.

Bowls are put on by tourism committees to drive revenue into their cities.

There is absolutely no reason they should have any part of the college football playoff.

The ONLY way they should continue to exist is if universities are guaranteed to not lose money on the trip.

It is so incredibly stupid they are part of the CFP. Can you imagine the Cowboys and Bears playing a playoff game in Los Angeles, just because someone threw a parade? It is so inefficient and decreases the value of the regular season.

if the playoff committee is a bunch of SEC biased corrupt dumbasses....i love teams opting out of bowl appearances and screwing their corrupt system. I would love to see Texas and BYU decide to not play in a bowl. So far Notre Dame, Florida State, Kansas State, Iowa State, Baylor and the list is growing. The system is joke.

I used to love bowl season before the portal and NIL. Now if it isn't a playoff, it's mostly a collection of 2nd and third stringers with no hussle

That's mostly what it was before, absent 3 or 4 games.

Bowl season was great when New Years Day had 4 games -- Cotton, Rose, Orange, and Sugar.

I never understood opting out of a bowl game. You miss out on 2 to 3 weeks of extra practice, seniors miss their last time to play, freshman and redshirt freshman miss a chance to play all because the AD is buthurt.

Expand the playoffs and keep bowl tie ins. Bowls will be relevant again.

ND can't risk losing a bowl game. That would mean the CFP was right to exclude them.

Florida St and Baylor didn't win enough games to be bowl eligible. So guess they opted out by sucking?

Lumping yourself in with a bunch of 5-7 and 6-6 bottom of the barrel teams, bold move Cotton! Notre dame is the only one throwing a hissy fit, the other programs are admitting they aren't good enough.

Of course you would love to see real teams opt out of a bowl, it would make notre dame look less like a tantrum throwing baby. Yet here we are!

ETA - my wife's hogs opted out of a bowl game this year too., finishing 2-10. I guess youre on their level now too

Virtually, all of the bowls are owned by ESPN.
They want their cake (I.e.,money), and want to eat it too. I totally get why a program would not want to go to a non-playoff "bowl," but ESPN is going to want them to show up for the clicks and views.

Keep in mind, it's all about the student athletes.

That 2nd and 3rd string guy isn't likely to be buying the Lexus for the agent's wife or GI Joe with the king fu grip for the agent's kids. If they aren't hitting the portal, they'll likely play.

One of the perks to making a bowl was the team gained an extra month of practices. Opting out should include team activities.
