There will only be 2 conferences soon enough, so winning one won't mean much

ACC was in that bucket for a bit because they play conference teams in "non-conference" games because of that dumb Notre Dame deal. Notre Dame cannot even play for an ACC CCG. Ever. That is their deal.

I'm not sure where you're going with this. Why does it matter if they have three or four losses? Here is the rule verbatim:
"There are five automatic qualifiers the five conference champions ranked highest by the CFP selection committee get in automatically"
No one said anything about number of wins. It's the five top conference champions.
