It's not in his best interest to quiet the rumors. Rumors = $$$. If he was to commit firmly for the rest of his days to A&M he would cost himself several million per year. He's about to get paid and he knows it. He's humming at the perfect time.

Do I think he's leaving - no.
Do I think he's smart enough to keep his mouth shut and let his agent make it rain - yes.

I can agree with some of this. Do I think he's about to get paid? Yes and no.

He needs to finish and push through the 'infamous Aggie meltdown of November' before given a good raise.

But if all of a sudden he loses 3 of the last 5 or something, then I can't imagine them unloading a raise on him. But I guess his agent will want an answer of sorts here much sooner than later just because of that and the fact that there are so many good openings this far (heck we are barely just over the half way mark of the season and it's crazy to see how many quality head coaching jobs are available or will be within days

So yes, I guess from what we've seen so far and what's in the recruiting pipeline, I suspect we will prob be seeing a raise here soon

I mean don't you think it'd get old to have to hear about something constantly than you had no part in? It's like your wife constantly griping about her ex boyfriends and never appreciating you.

I think these situations are more like your office just hired a sexy new floozie to answer the phones, and despite having been a good and faithful husband, your wife asks you every night when you get home how many times you boffed her

Quick clarification: I believe that's Alex Miller of The Eagle asking that question. Not Richard Zane.

I thought it was Zane. Glad it was not. I do not have the same expectation of beat writers.

I think it's immaterial at this point. If TAMU wants to keep Elko then we'll keep him. It's a better gig. Unless he just likes living in PA that much better than TX then there's not much to be worried about.

This is part and parcel of having a successful team and HC. If nobody wants to try and poach your HC then you have a much bigger problem vs top tier programs consistently reaching out to test the waters when they have an opening.

If he takes care of business, A&M will take care of him. He knows that. I would tell him we're not even discussing it until after the season.

100%

He's got to because next season is
UT
t.u
Bama
Oklahoma
LSU
Arizona St

If this season has told us anything it is that we have no idea how difficult our 2026 schedule is yet.

Relax. A&M bout to set a new record with the dumbest contract ever, just like we did with Jimbo

Is it currently a better place to be a football coach? Not close to being as good as A&M.

Curious what about State College makes it 1000x nicer in your mind.

Asking because I used to live in State College and disagree.

I'll agree with that. I wasnt expecting this team to perform like this. I also wasn't expecting our opponents to perform the way they have. Its been very surprising on every front.

On paper, the 2026 schedule looks light years harder than the 2025 schedule

Also, it does not matter if Penn State steals Elko. We'll bring Urban Meyer or Nick Saban.

If we agree to a raise before the end of the season, our leadership will have reached a new level of dumb. If they restructure his contract to make his salary guaranteed, we will win the all time booby prize. We need to quit over reacting because we're afraid it will look bad if lose a winning coach only to look even worse two years later.

This whole thread makes me a little sick to my stomach. Not jealous but just tired.

Just tired of the BS and want to watch good football. All the coaches being fired, others making generational wealth, and knowing some idiots paid a twenty something year old $6.8M a year to not be able to throw a ball from here to there without three skips is tiring. I hope we aren't currently seeing the downfall of the best sport in existence.

That was a non answer he gave and I hope he doesn't leave. ATM gave him a fair contract with huge incentives. If that isn't enough, to heck with it. In my humble opinion, college football was never supposed to turn into this garbage.

Sorry guys, just venting.....

He's done a great job so far is Coach and he's been supported by the Fans. He's not going anywhere right now. Let's finish out the season and reward him accordingly but not excessively. He's changed our culture and he knows how to use the portal to his advantage. I would rather other programs wanting my coach than ignoring him.

I didn't think BCG ever signed the extension, also,it was rumored he never signed is uk contract either, which cost him a bunch of money when he got fired.

Thanks for posting this. It has a bit nicer topography and you can cancel out the harsh summers with harsh winters, but B/CS has way more to offer than State College.

Personal preference. I would take mountains over flat any day.

I married into this cult, sent a kid there, I'm a fully paid up member but I have never given the whole "Texas" is the best place in the wotld thing.

If Elko doesn't make playoffs then he won't be a 'hot name' in coaching searches

If he does make playoffs then Great! Always best to have a coach that other fan bases wish they had.

Has Elko made the playoffs yet? Nope? Then wake me up again on this topic when he has.

I am from PA and live in PA. I go up to Happy Valley with friends every now and again. It's okay. Been trying for years to get them to come down for an A&M game to see what Aggieland/Texas have to offer.

I gotcha. That's like how after living my whole life in either PA or NYC I'd rather drive to Galveston than to the Jersey Shore, I'd rather be hot than cold, and I prefer the Texas food and women to what we have up here.

He stands to be one of the most well paid coaches in America if his team performs, and he is perfectly set up to make that happen.

This contract is a win win.

Hypothetically, if Penn State wanted to guarantee the incentives he'd be leaving on the table (up to 10.5 million) plus 75% of his remaining contract (per the terms, 26.25 million), and then his new contract on top of all that, and he wanted to leave a team currently at 7-0, then I'd show him the door. But I'd be shocked if Penn State could pay that let alone want to.

But a November slide brings his value way down and he becomes too expensive to hire away. We can't lose in this situation. We shouldn't renegotiate jack squat and if we do, then our athletic department and BOR are even dumber than I thought.

Maybe I'm delusional, but I think the practice of P5 schools poaching other Power conference head coaches is going to slow down. More and more money needs to go to players, and lower profile programs are finding boosters to throw money at their programs - even Indiana can keep Cignetti.

And - trivia question - when was the last time a poached power conference coach won a national championship?

Chiz from Iowa State to Auburn and Saban from Michigan State to LSU are all I can think of. Every other modern national championship coach has come from a coordinator position, NFL, or G5 school. Everyone else, including A&M, overpaid for disappointing results when hiring away a big name.

The further Elko can take us into the playoffs, the less chance he leaves. Any coach in the playoffs would be way behind in recruiting both hs and portal if taking the PSU job. I would hope Elko would rather keep his guys here then go to depleted roster there.
Of course he could go POS route and coach an Aggie team in the playoffs while secretly the head coach of another pos school. I hope Elko is better than that.

How many current openings are in a better spot than A&M is currently?

Honestly none of them, personally I view the current openings as downgrades over what he currently has here (more so because he's starting from scratch with less than he was left here). I doubt he leaves

Just be thankful we fired jimbo 2 years ago and not dealing with the coaching search BS this offseason. It's a good season to be on top! Lol

See now, if yall are including Bryan then maybe I can see what you mean. I haven't jumped onto this whole Bryan-College Station thing.

I was just in Aggieland last Nov and College Station seems way more developed and lively than when I was in school.

Same. Elko hasn't proven anything yet so doing the usual Aggie coaching contract would be stupid. Elko wasn't even our first choice

With A&M's history of picking head coaches, isn't that a good thing?
