They usually say the police won't do that and I tell them I've already done it for others, and the police are glad to help. They take off pretty quickly then.

if you want to give someone some money, then give from your heart. not with conditions. what they do with it is no longer your concern.

I say this as I had a brother who used to have a very bad drug addiction. yes, he used that money for drugs but many times, he used it to buy food or get a place for the night when the weather was unbearable. not always but many times he did. that is why i give out money, if I have some cash on me. My mother told me a long time ago, to never forget people used to help my brother out and I should do that for someone else son.

Trust me i have been with people who tell me dont give them money they are going to use it for drugs. And i just tell them. i dont know that with 100% certainty and i dont give it with conditions. I did my part to help out a fellow human being. the rest is up to them...

You haven't lived until you've worked at a church and dealt with panhandlers and con artists. Their stories are incredulous.

My favorite was the lady who showed up on Sunday in a hospital gown saying she just had open heart surgery on Friday. Said she needed money to get to California.

"Not another dime!" to borrow a phrase.

My take..The majority are either mentally ill or suffering the consequences of an often overly punitive and unfair legal system(even Trump rightfully pointed this out in his first term). If they are willing to work that hard standing and asking for money to go get booze or whatever offers them a moment of relief in their misery, it doesn't bother me one bit. I routinely ATM cash just to give. And I have had MANY graciously accept food when I have offered. I haven't had the same experience as others on this thread when it comes to giving food.

LOL, they weren't innocent and unfortunate homeless guys, and it only took a moment.

For those that believe in giving money directly to homeless, no one says you cannot. But again, homeless services recommend NOT doing so. Search for the Homeless specifically is whom I learned this from.

If you really want to help people that highly-tend to have addictions, mental issues, or are effectively being trafficked into panhandling by others, I suggest it's best to give that money to the homeless service charities. They have means of distribution and provide services (education, counselors, in some cases housing, food, clothing, etc.). In this way, you are sure more of your money is going toward positive resources to help them, rather than statistically speaking buying them drugs or having it stolen from them 95% of the time.

Another way of looking at it is cash is simply an intermediary to an end. So think in terms of end products you can directly give them. Would you directly give them material goods of 80% drugs, 10% food and water, and give 10% of the material goods you otherwise would have given them directly to the "pimp"? A service charity, rather, converts your cash into material goods and services, will visit the homeless and offer them food, clothing, blankets, and invite them to their facilities for counselling, etc.

I think they had him honored at a game and named it after him sometime after he was forced to retire. At least that is what I heard. I still have the program and was at the game when they honored him. I have fond memories of Billy Pickard telling me to go home and come back for autographs another time. I told him I was the only one here after practice. I think he yelled at everybody'.

I traveled on the road for many years. I had many instances of folks walking up to me at gas stations or stores asking for money.
My go to deal was to give them some sign language like I was deaf and not say a word and they would just walk away.

Of course. Nobody here wants to contribute to that.

But unless you with that person all day. you dont know what they are going to do with that money that day. Like I mentioned before, my brother had an addiction problem and sometimes he bought drugs/alcohol and other times he really did need to eat or if the weather was too much he saved to get a room. He lived up north so it would snow. That is what I meant by I have no idea what people do with that money on that day. I just give from my heart and what they do with it is up to them. I dont give with conditions. If anything, I give with the hope that today will be a better day for them.

I really have no idea how hard that must be to watch a brother struggle like that man. Wishing you and your family well. Coincidentally, my morning bible reading happened to fall on Matthew 5:42 "give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."

Panhandling should be banned, but sleeping outside should be a right. It shouldn't be illegal to rest on public property.

back in the 90s I helped a young lad out that "ran out of gas" with his family still in the car and he had walked from Navasota......like an idiot I gave him 20 bucks and my address as he promised he would return it the next day. sure enough and right on time the guy pulls up the following day by this point I had sobered up and realized what I had done was pretty stupid so I sent my roommate outside to collet and tell him that I was a drunk and didnt even live there so he would hopefully move on and never come back. well after 15 minutes my roommate came busting back in and said well now he owes me $40 and I let him keep your $20 too.......we never saw him again thankfully
