Why is it pretty obvious?

I would argue it's not at all. aTm is his first real big-time job, he needs to stay a few more years and learn under Elko before he take a HC job IMHO.

And he would he stupid to take the OSU job. I don't think he's stupid but a 5 year contract at $4-$5 mill. + can override ALOT of rational thinking, so who knows.

Why stupid? He's young. He could go to OSU, make a healthy pay raise, fail and get fired after 3 seasons and up back in the SEC as a OC.

Or have some success and move to a bigger program as a HC. The narrative here is that if he ends up at OSU its an auto fail. Why?

I don't think Klein is the first or second choice for OSU. If Klein is patient he can wait for the KSU job.

I don't want to get into a discussion about losing our OC but just as a hypothetical this would be interesting albeit unlikely.

Klein to OSU as hfc. Gundy to A& M as OC.

It has been a while since we've had this problem. It's a good thing.

My take is that it is not as big a deal as it used to be, as long as you get the hire right. Every year is a brand new year these days with as much roster tunrover as you have.

And obviously if we know Klein might go, Elko does, so he wont be blindsided last minute.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE HEAD BALL COACH.

OCs, DCs, position coaches all come and go. It's the HFC that sets the tone, makes the hires, decides the style and concepts of both O and D, coordinates the recruiting effort and sets position profiles, measurables and metrics for recruits the program is looking for, etc., etc. obvioulsy with some input for all but the HFC drives the ship and makes all the bug decisions and little decisions when necessary.

RC at A&M went through DCs like underwear but the D never changed. Saban at Bama had massive staff turnover but the results were the same. Osborne at NU, Spurrier at UF, etc., etc.

I am all in on Elko and trust him to make good hires, we have an elite staff right now and I would expect any replacements to be on par or an upgrade if possible.

That doesn't really line up with what happened to the D last year and Elko taking over this year.

I don't think it'll be difficult to replace Klein.

Elaborate please. Are you insinuating thats hes not very good or that hiring someone would be easy?

I'll go on record and say that I think Klein is our best OC since Kliff

We have a "Fire Colin Klein" topic still on the first page here.

I love this website.

ND game, we ran 7 plays inside the 10 yard line. The first 6 we gained 0 yards.
Auburn, struggled
Miss St. 4 plays inside the 3, didnt score.
Other 3rd and shorts.

This cost us 2 wins last year. And its not fixed. Were just better this year and it hasn't mattered yet.

You can say whatever you want. We have zero imagination on 3rd or 4th and short. Yes a play gets called every once in a while. I get we wont be perfect. But handing off 5 yards deep 3 times in a row?

Turn the dang page!

There has been NO official progress recognized this season by the fanbase until we reach the 9-win mark. So, the OP jumped the gun on a topic like this by 4 wins too early.

I would happily take a new playcaller. Dude struggled with Miss St and Auburn and then most teams last year. I bet Elko would take less of a risk on his next playcaller, knowing his own success depends on it.

The progress, over the last 18 games, has been incredible though. Last year, at this time, most of us knew it was a matter of time before opponents would run through our defense. Not BAS, just the fact that we had players who hadn't played under good defensive coaches. We were lucky to get to 8-4. This year we've earned our wins and are expecting to be better every game. Would Klein leaving affect our progress? I don't think so, unless a recruit or two changed their mind. We have some great recruiting classes on the horizon.

So we're just going to ignore the other three goal line possessions against ND where we scored three touchdowns so that we can generate a narrative. Got it.

When we found ourselves in first and goal against Mississippi State I think most Aggies were thinking just run the ball 4 times and we'll get in. I know I was. Didn't happen. We also scored 31 points in the game.

Who would you like to be OC instead of Klein?

Lets see how our offense even closes the year out. Overall Klein has been very good this year but id wait to see how year plays out. Florida defense vs our offense is a great test for him

I think it's pretty obvious that Klein is going to be a HC next season, most likely at Okie lite. So where does that leave us at OC? Where does that leave Marcel's development and our entire offense? Does a new OC mean a completely new offensive scheme? Our coaches are usually not poached, they're fired so this appears to be new territory for us.

are we just dreaming up things to worry about at this point?

Just enjoy the 2025 ride, it is the only thing that matters at this moment

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Exactly. We were good in goal line situations vs ND but the Klein haters conveniently ignore that .

We had one drive stuffed vs State and the world is coming apart even tho we won by 22 pts.

I will admit we weren't aggressive enough vs Auburn.

Klein also found something vs State that worked . The mid range passing and horizontally stretching plays opened up the rushing game. I expect more of that vs Florida.

They're looking at different options on the goal line. Pushing the ball over goal line needs to be an option.

We were 7-1 last year and then faded to 8-4. A&M's perception the past couple decades has been it typically fades.

There is a bit of a zero-sum game here. Unless A&M gets to double-digit wins this season (10+) including a bowl game, the program is not going to have changed much the national media narrative of basically being a mediocre program (good but not great, typically fades in Oct/Nov, etc.).

And regarding recruiting, A&M always recruits well regardless of coaching staff because of brand, its huge size, geography, financial resources, etc. A monkey could probably recruit a Top-20 class to A&M. A&M is basically like the University of Florida in terms of natural recruiting advantages, except over the past 2-3 decades we didn't ever get our turn at a Steve Spurrier/Urban Meyer high.

So...REAL PROGRESS this season...is still very much TBD. Lots of work left to do. I think the only thing you can say as of end of Week 6 is the team thus far is on a good path to real progress.
halfastros81

It's not just perception that we have faded in November, it's fact. I think lack of developed depth has been a significant piece of that . There are signs that is behind us. Proof is in the pudding tho
Loftin

If he gets hired as a head coach, that means he did a great job here. That's a good problem to have. It would also mean that our OC position will be a sought after one, with Elko presumably having multiple strong candidates to pick from.

I'm looking at the quality of the recruiting class, not the ranking (Jimbo), the development and performance of the players, the growth of a true football program. Last year, after Week 6, we were not on a good path to real progress. I was looking for the season to hurry up and end so Elko could get to work.

As opposed to Jimbo picking someone up that knows they will be handcuffed by the head coach.

One consideration Klein might take into effect is what the Oline may look like next year.

If the Oline takes a huge step back (like the sips this year vs last), then the offense will be much worse than this year and take some of the luster off of him as an OC.

And as far as Klein's performance as OC goes, it has been better than average compared to past OCs. If not for all the stupid penalties, we would probably be saying much better than average. Sure, I have had some issues with play calling at times. But some of the "play call" issues could be on Marcel. Like last game when he kept throwing deep to covered receivers when check downs were wide open.
