I'm curious as to how the new structuring of College sports, like NIL, conference consolidation, etc. will affect coaching tiers.
Is it better to be a OC at a major school in a major conference with beaucoup NIL than to be a HC at another lesser school?
I doubt it, but am curious.
With the current economics of the sport the answer is yes. In the offseason there was a lot of talk about how little coordinator turnover there was and it was all tied to NIL for two reasons.
1 - Now that schools have to come up with $20M to pay players they are far less likely to pay off a coach so fewer opportunities.
2 - With the chasm between haves and have nots popping up within conferences (Big 12) there are a lot of jobs where you will just be outclassed on the field regularly talent wise. Ten years ago a coach could spend 3 years at a school like KSU, built up a team, have a good season and move on. Now you can't build because good players get poached so unless you go to a program that can afford to pull in players you're better off waiting on a different job.
