I'm happy we are 4-0. I had ND as a definite loss, and was surprised we kept it close. A fluke win (ND missed PAT) is still a win.

I think my "final" preseason prediction was 6-6. Of course, after ND it had to change to 7-5. Based on our first 4 games my guess for the rest of the season would be:

MSU - close win
Florida - close win (L would not be surprising)
@arky - OT win
@LSU - 10+ point loss
@Mizzou - 7+ point loss
SC - win
Samford - big win
@t.u. - 6+ point loss

9-3 which would be fantastic and far exceeds my expectations.

That said, from what I've seen so far we just don't look like a playoff team. That's why I say we lucked out with the schedule. We get MSU instead of Ole Miss. Florida instead of TN or Georgia.

Watching the night games Saturday - PSU/Oregon, Bama/Georgia - those teams are still on another level compared to us.

I think we get a close win this weekend. Florida does not look good at all, and I think we should win that game pretty easily. Arkansas is a dumpster fire. LSU is always tough, and with the game being in BR, I'm going to assume a loss. Mizzou may or may not be good. It's really hard to tell with who they have played, but they allowed 31 to Kansas. I think that should be a winnable game. SC and Stamford should both be wins. As for tu, **** those guys. We're gonna take a dump in their Cheerios.

We may not look like a playoff team, but that doesn't mean we can't make the playoffs.

Florida currently looks terrible. They have talent but their coaching staff is atrocious. Their schedule is brutal too

Hot take: Our 4-0 record has very little to do with coaching. It is much more the product of:

*Roster.
*Schedule:
-UTSA and USU cupcakes.
-Pleasant road win against a ND team that probably isn't as good as advertised. Thank you backup QB for gift wrapping the botched PAT.
-Our tougher games are at the back end of the schedule.
-We don't have to play the SEC's best teams: Bama, Georgia, Ole Miss, TN

Call me on Nov 9th after we've played @arky, @LSU, and @Mizzou to tell me how great Elko is.

Right now our strength of record is the best in the country by most probability metrics.

Example: https://www.espn.com/college-football/fpi/_/view/resume

What this means is that our current 4-0 record is better than the record that the #25 team would be expected to have against our schedule vs that same comparison made for everybody else's current record and the schedule they've played.

Every single one of our opponents so far is likely considered better by objective metrics than what the typical fan thinks they are.

Both Utah State and UTSA are looking like they are roughly in the top 10-15 of Group of 5 type teams (ie they are equivalent and maybe better than teams like Oklahoma State, UCLA, North Carolina, West Virginia, Northwestern, etc

While a 5-7 preseason prediction was dumb I think its ok to be in wait and see mode.

I think how we do vs Auburn, MSU, Florida, Arkansas, and Mizzou will tell us plenty. We are way better on paper than all of them. Need to win em all (obviously off to a good start w Auburn win).

Win those and no rational person holds losing at LSU and at Texas against you unless there is obvious coaching malpractice during those games. That puts us at 10-2 and into the playoff.

This ought to be a playoff year. You arguably don't have the top 5 teams in SEC on your schedule in Ole Miss, Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Alabama.

Obviously a lot of games left, but do you think a 9-3 (best case for us, imo) Aggie team makes the playoffs along with those 5 teams, who I assume will finish ahead of us in the SEC standings?

Ole Miss will finish no worse than 10-2, maybe 11-1 if they beat OU.
Same with Georgia (they play each other).

Really, even if some combo of those teams beat each other (also throw in LSU), I don't see any of them finishing with more than 2 losses. I see the SEC championship being Bama vs LSU or Georgia.

How many 2-loss SEC teams will make the playoffs?

I don't think 9-3 gets us in. That would mean we probably only beat 1 ranked team in Notre Dame all year. Our losses would be to LSU, Missouri and Texas. Right now none of the other teams we play are close to ranked. There will be too many 10-2 type teams out there unfortunately in other conferences.

I posted before the season in a prediction thread that every year the gloom and doomers always think everyone on our schedule is going to be better than they were last year and better than us and that every year a lot of those teams end up being worse than expected. Before the season, most thought Auburn, Florida and Arky would all be really good teams and tough for us to beat. We have already beaten Auburn and Florida and Arky look like trash.

Most were also chalking up LSU and sip as definite losses. They may still end up that way but neither one of those teams has shown any signs of having an offense at this point.

The only problem with this always happening is that we have historically found a way to lose to one or two of the teams that weren't that good that year (like 5-7 Auburn last year). If we can eliminate that, then we will break through.

Jimbo has this team 2-2 regardless of what assistants or S&C he had. Jimbo could not beat Notre Dame or Auburn but Elko found a way. Anyone saying otherwise is an automatic tune out.

ND is a very good team maybe not top 10 but still very good

Now we do need to not have a WTF game but there are plenty of signs for optimism.

Jimbo had the better WHAT??
He might have had the higher accumulation of "stars" (as viewed by recruiting services), but that doesn't mean he had a better roster at all.

The way to gauge actual talent....not guesstimated projections....is NFL draft pick quantities.
Jimbo's wasn't all that great.
Elko's is still t.b.d.

Discuss Notre Dame.

Notre Dame loses at Miami.

Ags win in South Bend.

Notre Dame wins over Purdue and then at Arkansas. Arkansas fires Sam Pittman because of that game.

Ags and Miami are in the Top 5.

Win over ND seems pretty solid to me.

If we never hired Jimbo, then Elko most likely would have never been our DC. Jimbo's teams were best when Elko was on his staff. When he left for Duke, the wheels fell off for Jimbo. It's true that there could be no correlation but I like to think our investment in Jimbo is actually bearing fruit now and in future years simply for the fact that Jimbo came to A&M and brought Elko with him originally. In that regard, I'm very grateful for the Jimbo era and the fact that we can afford to buy him out.

It's a long season and things happen along the way to derail momentum but you have to look at what we've done so far and feel optimistic about this team and coaching staff.

Imo this season was all about 2 pivotal points.

Win one of ND, LSU, and Texas (done already)

Win every other game we should win because we either got em at home or we have much better players.

Auburn
Mississippi St
Arkansas
Florida
Mizzou

Are all games we should win. This imo is the real test on if these are the same ol Aggies. Do that, and now you have the luxury of losing both at LSU and at Texas. But something tells me we will win at least one of those too so if that happens, you can indeed drop one of those other 4.

If Jimbo was still coaching this team, I think he would be 3-1 with a loss to Notre Dame and a win over Auburn. Jimbo went 7-16 (7-14 SEC) in true road games, but 16-6 in SEC home games, including 2-1 against Auburn. Before winning our last 3 home games against Auburn, we had lost our first 4 home games against Auburn in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019, and 3 of those 4 losses were under Sumlin. Jimbo lost his first home game against Auburn in 2019 before winning his last 2 home games against Auburn in 2021 and 2023 by 17+ points each.

If we win our next 3 games against Mississippi State (home), Florida (home), and Arkansas (away), we will start 7-0 for the first time since 1994 before a road game at LSU. We are 0-6 in Baton Rouge since joining the SEC. Even worse, LSU is the second half of back-to-back road games, and it is very rare to win back-to-back SEC road games. That's why I'm going to assume a loss to LSU. With a likely road loss to LSU, we must win 2/3 November SEC games against Missouri (away), South Carolina (home), and Texas (away) to finish 10-2 (6-2 SEC) and make the playoffs.

We have lost 7 consecutive November or later road games dating back to a 29-19 loss at Ole Miss on 11/13/2021.

11/13/2021: 29-19 loss at 10-3 (6-2 SEC) Ole Miss
11/27/2021: 27-24 loss at 6-7 (3-5 SEC) LSU
11/12/2022: 13-10 loss at 5-7 (2-6 SEC) Auburn
11/4/2023: 38-35 loss at 11-2 (6-2 SEC) Ole Miss
11/25/2023: 42-30 loss at 10-3 (6-2 SEC) LSU
11/2/2024: 44-20 loss at 9-4 (5-3 SEC) South Carolina
11/23/2024: 43-41 4-OT loss at 5-7 (2-6 SEC) Auburn

A win over Missouri or Texas would be our first November/December road win in 5 years, but losses to both Missouri and Texas would extend our November road losing streak to 9 games and stretch into 2026. We must win one of the two road games at Missouri and Texas to make the playoffs.
